JEE Advanced 2027 Eligibility
Updated on 18 October 2026 · Compiled from official One of the seven Zonal Coordinating IITs on rotation, under the Joint Admission Board notices
A candidate must meet all five criteria in the 2026 brochure at the same time. The 2027 brochure will move the Class 12 years forward by one.
The five criteria for Indian nationals
| Criterion | Rule in the 2026 brochure |
|---|---|
| A1: JEE Main performance | Be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the JEE Main 2026 B.E./B.Tech. paper |
| A2: Age | Born on or after 1 October 2001; SC, ST and PwD on or after 1 October 1996 |
| A3: Attempts | Maximum two attempts in two consecutive years |
| A4: Class 12 | First appearance in Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects |
| A5: Earlier IIT admission | Not admitted to any IIT programme listed in the JoSAA 2025 business rules |
For the 2027 cycle, expect the Class 12 years to become 2026 or 2027 and the age cut to shift by a year; confirm in the new brochure.
Category-wise top 2,50,000 distribution
| Category | Candidates shortlisted |
|---|---|
| OPEN (40.5%) | 96,187 (plus 5,063 OPEN-PwD) |
| GEN-EWS (10%) | 23,750 (plus 1,250 PwD) |
| OBC-NCL (27%) | 64,125 (plus 3,375 PwD) |
| SC (15%) | 35,625 (plus 1,875 PwD) |
| ST (7.5%) | 17,812 (plus 938 PwD) |
The total may slightly exceed 2,50,000 because of tied ranks or scores.
Class 12 year and the 18 June 2024 rule
Appearance means the board declared the result for that year, even if your own result was withheld. Candidates who first appeared in Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for 2026. The one exception is for boards that declared the 2023-24 results on or after 18 June 2024. If the board declared results earlier and only your result was withheld, you are not eligible.
Attempts and earlier IIT admission
- Two attempts in two consecutive years is the limit, as stated in criterion A3.
- If you were admitted to any IIT programme (even if you later left or the admission was cancelled after joining), you cannot appear.
- You can still appear if you were allotted an IIT seat in JoSAA but did not report, withdrew before the last round, or had the seat cancelled before the last round.
- Admission to an IIT preparatory course for the first time in 2025 does not block you.
Class 12 marks needed for admission to IITs
Appearing in JEE Advanced needs no minimum Class 12 marks, but admission to an IIT does. You must satisfy at least one of two conditions, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects and at least five subjects overall.
- At least 75% aggregate (65% for SC, ST and PwD), or
- Be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in your board.
- The five subjects counted are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, one language (the higher if more than one) and the best of any other subject. Marks not out of 100 are scaled to 100.
- The marksheet must come from one board only.
Special cases
- Improvement: if you reappear in Class 12, the percentile route needs reappearance in all subjects of the same year; for the 75% route you can improve any subjects and the higher marks per subject are used.
- Equivalent qualifications: the brochure accepts NIOS (minimum five subjects), a three-year AICTE or state board diploma, A levels, IB, Cambridge and other AIU-recognised examinations. Others need an AIU equivalence certificate.
- Boards giving only grades must supply a certificate stating the equivalent marks at seat acceptance.
- Mining Engineering: women are admitted at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IIT Kharagpur and IIT (BHU) Varanasi.
Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO
Foreign nationals do not need JEE Main and register directly. They must be born on or after 1 October 2001 (relaxation for compulsory armed forces service), have at most two attempts in consecutive years, first appear in Class 12 in the eligible years with PCM, and not have been admitted to an IIT earlier. They are considered in addition to the 2,50,000 Indian candidates.
Seats for foreign nationals are supernumerary, capped at 10% of seats in each course, and have no reservation or separate female sub-category. OCI/PIO cardholders who got their cards after 4 March 2021 are treated as foreign nationals, called OCI/PIO (F). Those with cards before that date choose either OCI/PIO (F) or OCI/PIO (I), which treats them at par with Indians for OPEN and OPEN-PwD seats only. The choice cannot be changed, and applying in both ways leads to cancellation.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an age limit for JEE Advanced?
Yes. For 2026 general candidates had to be born on or after 1 October 2001, with five years relaxation for SC, ST and PwD. The limit moves forward each year.
Do I need 75% in Class 12 to write JEE Advanced?
No. The 75% (or top 20 percentile) rule applies for admission to IITs, checked at seat acceptance, not for appearing in the exam.
