About JEE Advanced
JEE Advanced is the second stage of the engineering entrance process in India and the gateway to undergraduate programmes at the 23 IITs. It is held by one of the IITs on a rotating basis under the Joint Implementation Committee, and only the top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers may appear. It suits students aiming for B.Tech, B.Sc, B.Arch and integrated programmes at IITs, and the rank is also accepted by some other institutes. Seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling. What JEE Advanced is
JEE Advanced is held by the seven Zonal Coordinating IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board. One of them acts as the organizing institute each year on a rotation. For 2026 the brochure names IIT Roorkee as the organizing institute.
The test is fully computer based. Each of the two papers has Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections, and the questions test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability rather than recall.
Why it matters
A JEE Advanced rank is required for a seat at any IIT. Without it you can still use your JEE Main rank for NITs, IIITs and other GFTIs through JoSAA, but not for IITs. The 2026 brochure also lists IISc Bengaluru, the IISERs, IIST, RGIPT and IIPE as institutes that have admitted students using JEE Advanced ranks; contact them directly for their rules.
Qualifying does not guarantee a seat. The brochure states that admission depends on merit and the seats available in each round of seat allocation.
