Rank Calculation Method

The JEE Advanced rank is calculated based on the aggregate marks obtained in all three subjects - Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The rank list is prepared in the following order:

  1. Common Rank List (CRL) for all candidates
  2. Category-wise rank lists (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, GEN-EWS)
  3. Preparatory course rank lists

Important Note

Only candidates who qualify the minimum cutoff marks in each subject and aggregate are included in the rank list.

1
When will JEE Advanced 2026 result be declared?
JEE Advanced 2026 result will be declared on June 1, 2026 on the official portal jeeadv.ac.in. The exam was held on May 17, 2026 (Paper 1: 9 AM–12 PM, Paper 2: 2:30–5:30 PM). Before the result, the ORS (scanned response sheet) was released on May 21, 2026 and the provisional answer key on May 25, 2026.
2
What is the minimum marks required to qualify JEE Advanced 2026?
To qualify JEE Advanced 2026 and appear in the rank list, candidates must score minimum marks in each subject AND in aggregate. Typical cutoffs (subject to official announcement): General — 10% in each subject + 35% aggregate; OBC-NCL — 9% per subject + 31.5% aggregate; SC/ST/PwD — 5% per subject + 17.5% aggregate. Only candidates clearing both conditions are ranked.
3
How is JEE Advanced rank calculated?
JEE Advanced rank (CRL — Common Rank List) is calculated based on aggregate marks in Paper 1 and Paper 2 combined across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. If two candidates have identical total marks, the tie is broken by: (1) higher aggregate percentage, (2) higher marks in Mathematics, (3) higher marks in Physics, (4) older candidate. Category-wise rank lists (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, GEN-EWS) are prepared separately.
4
What rank is needed to get IIT Bombay CSE?
IIT Bombay CSE is the most competitive seat in JEE Advanced. In JoSAA 2025, the closing rank for IIT Bombay CSE (General, Gender Neutral) was approximately 60–75. To have a guaranteed chance, you need to be in the top 60 nationally. IIT Delhi CSE closes around rank 100–130 and IIT Madras CSE around rank 150–180.
5
What happens after JEE Advanced 2026 result?
After the June 1 result: (1) JoSAA 2026 registration opens — all qualified candidates must register to participate in IIT/NIT/IIIT/GFTI counselling. (2) Choice filling window opens for selecting preferred institute-branch combinations. (3) Round 1 seat allotment results come out (expected mid-June 2026). (4) JoSAA runs 6 rounds total through July 2026. Candidates who do not register in time will lose their seat allocation opportunity.
6
Can I get into IIT with rank 10,000 in JEE Advanced?
Yes. With a JEE Advanced CRL rank of 10,000, you can get admission to newer IITs in various engineering branches. Based on JoSAA 2025 data, newer IITs like IIT Tirupati, IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu, and IIT Palakkad had CSE opening ranks ranging from 2,100 to 3,500. At rank 10,000, you can expect ECE or Mechanical at newer IITs and Civil/Chemical at mid-tier IITs. Use our IIT College Predictor for branch-specific predictions.
7
Is JEE Advanced scorecard needed for JoSAA counselling?
Yes, the JEE Advanced scorecard is required during document verification in JoSAA counselling. After downloading from jeeadv.ac.in, save multiple copies. You will need it at the time of admission along with Class 10/12 marksheets, category certificate (if applicable), and identity proof. The scorecard contains your marks, rank, and qualifying status.
8
What if I qualify JEE Advanced but miss JoSAA registration?
If you qualify JEE Advanced 2026 but fail to register for JoSAA within the deadline (expected first week of June 2026), you forfeit your chance at IIT admission for that year. JoSAA registration is mandatory — merely qualifying the exam does not automatically enroll you. Watch the official JoSAA 2026 schedule at josaa.nic.in and set reminders for registration deadlines.
