How JoSAA works for IITs
- 1
Register
Register on josaa.nic.in after the result. In 2026 registration and choice filling began on 3 June.
- 2
Fill choices
List your preferred programme and institute combinations in order. The 2026-27 course list appears only at this stage.
- 3
Mock allotments
Check the seat allotment results of each round against your choices.
- 4
Accept the seat
Pay the seat acceptance fee and upload documents for verification within the deadline.
- 5
Freeze, float or slide
Use the options JoSAA gives. Withdraw only before the cutoff date to keep your options.
Seat reservation and special quotas
- GEN-EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5% in every course; PwD 5% horizontal in each category.
- Two seats per institute for Defence Service candidates, who must be in the Common Rank List.
- Supernumerary seats for women so each IIT reaches at least 20% female enrolment.
- Foreign national seats are supernumerary, up to 10% per course.
Preparatory course
Vacant seats reserved for SC, ST and PwD candidates are offered through a one-year preparatory course to candidates in the relaxed rank lists, on the JoSAA portal. After passing, they get direct admission in the next year to the programme originally allotted. Candidates admitted in 2026 may appear in JEE Advanced 2027 if otherwise eligible.
B.Arch and other rules
- B.Arch is offered only at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee, and needs a pass in the AAT plus the Class 12 criterion.
- PwD candidates with locomotor disability and colour blindness cannot take B.S. in Applied Geology or Exploration Geophysics.
- The IIT medical board's opinion on PwD status is final.
- Documents are checked at seat acceptance; false documents lead to cancellation.
