JEE Advanced 2026 Architecture Counselling – B.Arch at IITs

How AAT scores feed into JoSAA counselling for B.Arch seat allotment at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee

How B.Arch Counselling Works

Unlike regular B.Tech counselling, which is based purely on your JEE Advanced CRL rank, admission to the 5-year B.Arch program at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee requires an additional qualifying step — the AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test). The actual seat allotment, however, still flows through the same JoSAA counselling system used for B.Tech, just with a separate merit list built from AAT scores.

This means you fill B.Arch as a choice within your regular JoSAA choice list, but your position in the B.Arch-specific merit list (not your JEE Advanced CRL rank) determines whether you get the seat.

Planning Your Choices

If architecture is a genuine career interest, treat the AAT registration as a priority immediately after your JEE Advanced result, since the window is short. Use a B.Arch college predictor to estimate your chances once AAT results are declared, and review what to do after JoSAA seat allotment for the reporting process.

Frequently Asked Questions – Architecture Counselling 2026

Common questions about B.Arch counselling at IITs via JoSAA

1
Is B.Arch counselling at IITs done through JoSAA?
B.Arch seats at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee are allotted through JoSAA, but only to candidates who have qualified both JEE Advanced and the AAT. Your JoSAA choice list must include the B.Arch program at these institutes for it to be considered during seat allotment rounds.
2
How is the merit list prepared for B.Arch seats?
The B.Arch merit list / rank list is prepared using AAT marks among candidates who have qualified JEE Advanced and the AAT qualifying cutoff. Your JEE Advanced CRL rank alone does not determine your B.Arch seat — AAT performance is the deciding factor for the architecture-specific merit list.
3
Can I choose both B.Tech and B.Arch options in JoSAA?
Yes. During JoSAA choice filling, you can include both B.Tech branches and the B.Arch program (at IIT Kharagpur/Roorkee) in your preference list, in whatever order you prefer. The seat you're allotted depends on your respective rank/merit position in each list and the order of your preferences.
4
What documents are needed for B.Arch seat confirmation?
Typically required: JEE Advanced and AAT admit cards/scorecards, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and certificates, category certificate (if applicable), passport-size photographs, and identity proof. Exact document requirements are listed in the JoSAA seat allotment letter — always cross-check the official checklist before reporting.
5
Is there a separate fee for B.Arch seat acceptance?
The seat acceptance fee for B.Arch follows the same JoSAA structure as B.Tech programs (a seat acceptance/processing fee at the time of provisional allotment, followed by institute-specific tuition and hostel fees upon reporting). Refer to the official JoSAA fee notification for exact current amounts.
6
What if I don't qualify AAT but have a good JEE Advanced rank?
If you qualify JEE Advanced but do not meet the AAT qualifying cutoff (or didn't register/appear for AAT), you remain eligible for all regular B.Tech programs through JoSAA based on your JEE Advanced rank, but you cannot be considered for the B.Arch programs at IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee.
