The JEE Main syllabus is derived largely from the NCERT Class 11 and 12 curriculum for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with NTA publishing an official syllabus document each year that lists every unit and topic candidates are expected to know. While the core structure has stayed broadly consistent over the years, NTA has occasionally trimmed a few topics from the syllabus (most notably in the post-2020 period, when certain chapters were reduced to align with rationalized school curricula), so it's worth checking the latest official syllabus PDF on jeemain.nta.nic.in rather than assuming last year's list is unchanged.

Each of the three subjects carries roughly equal weightage in Paper 1 — 25 questions and 100 marks apiece — but that doesn't mean every chapter within a subject is equally important. Historically, certain topics recur with disproportionately high frequency across years: in Physics, Mechanics (Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Rotational Motion) and Electricity & Magnetism together account for a large share of questions; in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry (Equilibrium, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry) and core Organic Chemistry reactions are heavily tested, while Inorganic Chemistry, though conceptually simpler, is almost entirely NCERT-based and offers reliably scoring questions if studied directly from the textbook; in Mathematics, Calculus (Limits, Continuity, Differentiability, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations combined) forms the single largest topic cluster, often exceeding 30% of the Mathematics section by itself.

A practical way to use the syllabus is to treat it as a checklist during revision rather than just a reference document — going topic by topic and rating your own confidence honestly helps identify genuine gaps rather than chapters you merely recognize. Since Physics and Mathematics both require sustained problem-solving practice (not just conceptual reading), while a meaningful portion of Chemistry — especially Inorganic and factual Organic content — rewards direct NCERT reading and memorization, allocating study time proportionally to how each subject is actually tested (rather than equally by chapter count) tends to be a more efficient strategy in the final months before the exam.

How Much Beyond NCERT Do You Need?

A common question among JEE Main aspirants is whether NCERT textbooks alone are sufficient. For Chemistry, especially Inorganic Chemistry, NCERT is close to sufficient on its own — a large share of questions are directly based on facts, trends, and reactions stated in the textbook, and additional reference material mainly helps with speed and question variety rather than covering new content. For Physics and Mathematics, however, NCERT is a good starting point for concepts but generally insufficient for the level of problem-solving JEE Main demands — these subjects typically require supplementary practice books (such as HC Verma or DC Pandey for Physics, and standard JEE-level problem sets for Mathematics) to build the calculation speed and multi-step problem-solving ability the exam tests. Organic Chemistry sits in between: NCERT covers the mechanisms and named reactions, but consistent practice with reaction-based problems from other sources helps solidify pattern recognition needed to solve JEE-style organic questions quickly.
