Registration Process Comparison

JEE Main 2027 Session 1 Registration vs Session 2

Separate or combined form, fee, correction window and who should apply for which session, based on the 2026 pattern.

What This Page Covers

This page is about the paperwork side: how you register for each session, not how to score better in either. If you want to decide which session suits your preparation, read our exam-strategy comparison, JEE Main 2027 Session 1 vs Session 2.

As of mid-October 2026, NTA has not opened Session 1 registration or released the Information Bulletin for 2027. Everything on registration mechanics below is based on the JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin, FAQs and public notices, and may change for 2027. A tentative 2027 calendar has been reported with Session 1 in late January 2027 and Session 2 expected in early April 2027; treat it as unconfirmed and verify on jeemain.nta.nic.in. Our JEE Main 2027 exam dates page tracks what is known.

Separate or Combined Registration?

The 2026 documents answer this directly. Step 1 of the application procedure in the bulletin says the system-generated application number "will be used/referred for both Sessions of JEE (Main) - 2026". The Important Information section adds that a candidate can apply for Session 1 and pay the fee accordingly, will be given an opportunity to apply for Session 2 separately using the same application number along with the fee payment, and that if a candidate wishes to apply only for Session 2 they can register later, when the form for that session is active. NTA's FAQ (no. 4) puts it as: candidates have to apply separately for each session. The 1 February 2026 public notice then spelled out the Session 2 steps.

The word "combined" is therefore misleading. One application number covers the year, but each session has its own window, its own fee and its own admit card. Registering for Session 1 does not enrol you in Session 2. If NTA changes this for 2027, for example by offering a single combined form and fee, the Information Bulletin will say so; our Information Bulletin guide lists what to read first.

The most important rule is the one-application rule. The bulletin says that under no circumstances will a candidate be allowed to fill more than one application form, and that strict action will be taken even at a later stage, with such cases treated as Unfair Means. The 1 February 2026 notice repeated that any candidate with more than one application number will be treated as UFM. If you cannot log in for Session 2, recover your credentials instead of starting over; see login, forgot password and application number.

Who Should Apply for Which Session

CandidateRegistration advice
Class 12 student with a board exam in February to MarchRegister for Session 1 on time; it gives a trial and keeps Session 2 as a backup. Board exam stress should not make you skip the form.
Dropper or repeaterApply for both unless you have a clear reason not to. Eligibility is tied to your Class 12 passing year (2026 bulletin Para 3.3), so a skipped session is not banked for later. See the droppers and repeaters guide.
Candidate with a pending certificate (category, disability)The 2026 FAQ (no. 25) allowed entering the acknowledgement number and application date if the category certificate was not yet available. Category could be edited at Session 2 in 2026 only in the correction window, so do not claim a category you cannot support.
Candidate who missed Session 1 registrationFresh registration is possible at the Session 2 stage; budget time for the full form and documents.
Candidate happy with the Session 1 scoreYou may skip Session 2 registration. Compare with the Session 1 vs Session 2 strategy page before deciding.
Candidate who wants to improve rankPay for Session 2 early, once the portal opens. Late attempts face congestion.

Repeater-specific questions are answered in JEE Main 2027 registration for droppers and repeaters.

Corrections Across the Two Sessions

Each session had its own one-time correction window in the 2026 cycle: NTA's notice of 20 November 2025 for Session 1 (1 to 2 December 2025) and its notice of 21 February 2026 for Session 2 (27 to 28 February 2026). Both said that, once corrections are submitted, the form is frozen, and that no correction would be entertained afterwards under any circumstances. Fields that needed extra fee required payment first, and the notes said the fee would not be reimbursed in any case.

The Session 2 notice applied to everyone who applied for Session 2, whether as a fresh candidate or as a Session 1 applicant who also registered for Session 2. This matters because an error left uncorrected after Session 1 is still there in Session 2 unless the Session 2 window lets you change it, and the fields that stayed locked (mobile number, email, address, emergency contact and photograph) cannot be changed in either. Date of birth and signature were listed as editable in the Session 1 window and for new Session 2 candidates, but not in the Session 2 list for existing candidates, so fix them in the Session 1 window. The full picture is in our correction window guide.

Exam-city choices could be revisited for Session 2 (the notice let existing candidates choose cities again), which helps if you move for a drop year or a different centre is more convenient in April. NTA still did not bind itself to the choice made. Check the dates for both windows early with the registration last date page, read how to choose cities on the exam city choice page, and follow the step-by-step form guide for the screens themselves.

The 2026 Session 2 Process, Step by Step

This is what NTA's 1 February 2026 public notice and Annexure 1 described for the second session. The two candidate types followed different paths.

StepApplied for Session 1 earlierDid not apply earlier
1. AccessLog in with the previous application number and passwordRegister as a new user and generate an application number
2. FormOpt for paper (course), medium of question paper, exam citiesFill the full application form: personal details, paper, cities, educational details, uploads, live photograph
3. FeePay the Session 2 fee as applicablePay the fee as applicable for the chosen paper
4. Read firstPublic notice of 1 Feb 2026 and its Annexure 1Information Bulletin 2026 for papers, scheme, timing and eligibility, plus the notice
5. AfterwardsOne-time correction window for Session 2, then city slip and admit cardSame one-time correction window, then city slip and admit card

Both groups were also told to use an email address and mobile number that belong to the candidate or the parents/guardians, since NTA sends all communication only through them. For the mechanics of the three steps, see the step-by-step guide. If the Session 2 payment fails, see fee payment failed and refund.

How Two Sessions Feed One Rank

Registration choices only make sense with the scoring rule in mind. The 2026 bulletin says a candidate need not appear in both sessions, and that a candidate who appears in more than one session has the best of the NTA scores considered for the merit list and ranking. For Paper 2A and 2B, it adds that the best of the two total NTA scores (not individual subject scores) is used. The bulletin also says the All India Rank is compiled and declared after Session 2.

Two practical points follow for registration. First, there is no official penalty for applying to both sessions, so the main cost is the second fee. Second, a missed exam is final: the bulletin says no re-test is provided to a candidate unable to appear on the scheduled date and shift, so the second session exists as a scheduled opportunity, not a make-up exam for a missed day. To use Session 2, you must complete its separate application and fee payment in its own window.

Checklist Before You Pay for Session 2

  • Confirm the application number and password still work before the window opens.
  • Check your Session 1 details against the Class 10 certificate; the locked fields cannot be fixed later.
  • Decide the paper: Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), Paper 2A (B.Arch), Paper 2B (B.Planning) or a combination, since the fee depends on the combination.
  • Re-pick cities from the States of your present and permanent address, up to the number the bulletin permits.
  • Check the medium of the question paper; the 2026 bulletin says it cannot be changed at a later stage, although the 2026 correction windows did list medium as editable.
  • Keep the Session 2 transaction ID and Confirmation Page; the 2026 bulletin says a separate Confirmation Page is generated for each session after successful payment.
  • Note the correction window dates the day they are announced.

Calendar for both sessions is on the registration last date page. If something goes wrong, see helpline and grievance, and avoid the traps in registration mistakes to avoid.

Risks to Plan For

  • Skipping Session 1 registration because boards are near, then discovering Session 2 is a full form on a shorter timeline.
  • Assuming a reopened window will appear. In 2026 it did for Session 2 (12 to 13 March), but it was about a day and a half long, and NTA said no correction facility would follow.
  • Forgetting your application number and password between January and February.
  • Paying the Session 2 fee on the last day when gateways are slowest.
  • Letting a Session 1 mistake roll into Session 2 because you never used the correction window.
  • Relying on aggregator pages for fee amounts rather than the bulletin.
  • Reapplying instead of logging in. A second application number is treated as Unfair Means.
  • Assuming an exam city choice is a guarantee. NTA can allot a different city and its decision is final (bulletin Para 5.1).

For the amount structure, see expected registration fee structure, and for when the notification is likely, see the notification expected date tracker.

JEE Main 2027 Session 1 vs Session 2 Registration – FAQs

Common questions about registering for each JEE Main session

1
Do I need to register separately for JEE Main Session 2?
Not if you applied for Session 1. NTA's public notice of 1 February 2026 said candidates who had applied for JEE Main 2026 Session 1 had to log in with their previous application number and password and pay the Session 2 fee, choosing only the paper, medium of the examination and exam cities. Candidates who had not applied earlier had to apply afresh. The 2026 bulletin also said the application number generated at registration is used for both sessions. NTA's 2026 FAQ (no. 4) said candidates apply separately for each session. Whether 2027 follows this is for the bulletin to confirm.
2
Is the Session 2 fee lower if I already paid for Session 1?
The 2026 bulletin printed one fee table headed 'Fee payable for JEE (Main) 2026 for each Session', and nothing in it, or in the 1 February 2026 notice, offers a reduction for Session 1 applicants. The fee was therefore payable again for each session. Fees are by category, gender, paper combination and centre location (India or outside), plus payment-gateway processing charges and GST. We do not quote 2027 amounts. Our registration fee page explains the structure.
3
Can I change my details when I apply for Session 2?
In 2026, existing candidates were allowed to choose the paper, the medium of the question paper and the examination cities at the Session 2 stage, and to pay the fee. The one-time Session 2 correction window (27 to 28 February 2026, Annexure 1 of the 21 February 2026 notice) let existing candidates edit paper, medium, state code of eligibility, exam cities, Class 10 and Class 12 details, gender, category and identity details for those not using Aadhaar, with any extra fee non-refundable. Mobile number, email, address, emergency contact and photograph could not be changed. Confirm which fields are editable in the 2027 bulletin.
4
Can I skip Session 1 and appear only in Session 2?
Yes. The 2026 bulletin (Para 1.3) says a candidate need not appear in both sessions, and FAQ no. 5 says a candidate who missed the January form can fill the April form when the portal opens for that session. You would then complete the full registration at the Session 2 stage. The trade-off is practical: you lose the practice run and the chance of a better of two scores, not an official penalty.
5
Which session counts for my rank?
If you appear in both, the better of your NTA scores is used. The 2026 bulletin (Para 1.3 and FAQ no. 6) says the best of the NTA scores will be considered for the merit list or ranking. Check the bulletin for the 2027 rule. This page covers registration only; strategy is discussed in our Session 1 vs Session 2 comparison.
6
What is the risk of two application numbers?
Serious. The 1 February 2026 notice said a candidate with more than one application number would be treated as using unfair means (UFM), even if found later, and the bulletin says multiple forms are not accepted and lead to cancellation of the result. If you lose your login, recover it instead of registering again.
7
Was the Session 2 registration window ever reopened?
Yes, in 2026. Session 2 applications ran from 1 to 25 February 2026 (fee up to 11:50 P.M. on 25 February). After multiple representations, NTA's notice of 12 March 2026 reopened the portal from the afternoon of 12 March to 09:00 P.M. on 13 March 2026, with fee payment up to 11:50 P.M. on 13 March, and no correction facility afterwards. The earlier notice had said there would be no further extension, so never plan around a reopening for 2027.
