JEE Main 2027 Login: Forgot Password and Application Number

How candidate login works, how to get back in if you lose your credentials, and how to keep your account safe.

How JEE Main Candidate Login Works

The JEE Main portal gives each candidate an application number when they complete the first registration step, and the candidate sets a password at the same time. From then on, the application number plus password is the key to everything: resuming the form, paying the fee, downloading the confirmation page, using the correction window, and later downloading the city intimation slip and admit card.

As of mid-October 2026, JEE Main 2027 registration has not opened and NTA has not released the bulletin. Password and reset rules below come from the JEE Main 2026 Information Bulletin and should be treated as a guide until the 2027 bulletin appears. The official address is jeemain.nta.nic.in (NTA's main site is nta.ac.in); always reach the portal by typing the address yourself or following links from the NTA site.

Registration itself is explained in our step-by-step form guide, where saving your credentials is step 3.

Login steps (per the 2026 Bulletin and portal)

  1. Open the official site and choose the candidate login option.
  2. Enter your application number and password.
  3. Complete any verification shown on screen (such as a captcha) and submit.
  4. The dashboard opens with your application status and the next steps. The same application number and password are used for both sessions of a cycle.

Recovering a Forgotten Password

  1. On the login page, click the Forgot Password link.
  2. Choose a method. The 2026 Bulletin lists three: the security question and answer you chose while filling the form, a verification code sent by SMS to your registered mobile number, or a reset link emailed to your registered address.
  3. Follow the screen for the method you chose: answer the question, enter the SMS code, or open the email link.
  4. Set a new password that meets the policy (8 to 13 characters with upper case, lower case, a number and a special character from !@#$%^&*-), then log in with it.

The security question answer is the item candidates forget most often. Write it down at registration, exactly as typed, including spelling. If the answer is case or spelling sensitive and you do not recall it, use the OTP or email route instead.

If the registered mobile number is out of use, the OTP route will not work. This is the main reason to register with a number that will remain active until results and counselling are complete. The 2026 correction notices listed mobile number and email address among the fields candidates could NOT change, so treat these two as permanent and ask via the helpline and grievance route.

Recovering a Forgotten Application Number

Before using the recovery tool, spend two minutes searching. The number is usually in the registration email or SMS, in the downloaded confirmation page, and in any printout you took. Search your inbox for NTA or JEE Main, and check the spam folder.

  1. Search your registered email (including spam) and SMS inbox for messages from NTA or the portal sent at registration.
  2. Open the confirmation page PDF or printout, if you got that far; the Information Bulletin says the application number is printed on it.
  3. Check the exam city intimation slip, admit card or any NTA email, which carry the number.
  4. If none of these work, email jeemain@nta.ac.in or call 011-40759000 or 011-69227700. The bulletin advises that official queries should preferably be sent by email with the name, application number, postal address and contact number, and that vague or anonymous queries are not entertained, so give every identifying detail you can.

Some aggregator sites describe a self-service Forgot Application Number tool on the 2026 login page. We could not verify this in the Bulletin, FAQs or public notices, so use it only if you see it on the official page, and enter your name and parents' names exactly as in the form.

Common Login Errors and Fixes

ProblemLikely causeWhat to try
Invalid credentialsTypo, caps lock, extra spaceRetype slowly; paste into a notepad first to check
Verification code rejectedMistyped or stale image or codeRefresh and enter it again
OTP not receivedNetwork, wrong number, heavy trafficWait a few minutes, retry once, check the registered number
Reset link not workingLink expired or opened in another browserRequest a fresh link and open it in one browser
Page will not loadTraffic spike near deadlinesTry at a quieter hour, avoid the last day
Account seems lockedRepeated wrong attemptsWait, then use the reset route rather than guessing

Login trouble becomes expensive near deadlines, when the portal is slowest. Do not wait for the last two days to test your credentials. Our guide to registration mistakes lists last-day rushes among the biggest avoidable problems, and the correction window page explains why you need working login before that short window opens.

Official Rules on Application Number and Password (2026 Bulletin)

The 2026 Information Bulletin describes Step 1 as the Registration Form, where the candidate provides required details, creates a password and chooses a security question with its answer. After the personal details are submitted, an Application Number is generated. It is used to complete the remaining steps and for all future reference and correspondence. It was used for both Sessions of JEE (Main) 2026, so a Session 1 applicant logged in with the same number and password for Session 2.

Item2026 Bulletin position
Password length8 to 13 characters
Upper caseAt least one
Lower caseAt least one
NumberAt least one
Special characterAt least one from !@#$%^&*-
Security questionChosen at registration, with your answer
Reset routesSecurity Q&A, SMS code to registered mobile, email link to registered address
Changing passwordAllowed after login, if desired
Log outAdvised at the end of every session
ResponsibilityNTA and NIC are not responsible for misuse of a shared password
One application onlyMore than one application form or number can lead to cancellation and Unfair Means action

The last row explains why you should never re-register because you lost a password: a second application number is treated as a duplicate application in the 2026 Bulletin. Recover the first account instead. If you lost money in a failed payment on one account, see the failed payment and refund page.

The same login is what you use for Session 2. In 2026 the public notice of 1 February said existing candidates logged in with their previous application number and password and could only choose paper, medium, exam cities and pay the fee. Compare the process on our Session 1 versus Session 2 registration page.

Where Login Is Needed After You Apply

A working login matters at every later stage. In 2026 NTA public notices told candidates to download the exam city intimation slip using their login credentials, and the correction window in each session was announced as a short, one-time facility with fields listed in an annexure. Details of the 2026 windows are on our correction window page.

Official contact points in the 2026 FAQs: helpline 011-40759000 (the notices also list 011-69227700) and email jeemain@nta.ac.in. Nothing in the Bulletin lets you send documents or the confirmation page by post, WhatsApp or hand to NTA. Our helpline and grievance page lists escalation routes, and the Information Bulletin page will track the 2027 text.

Security Tips for Your JEE Main Account

  • Use a password that is not your date of birth, name or mobile number, and not one you use for email or social media.
  • Keep the application number, password and security answer in a notebook or password manager, not in a chat to yourself.
  • Type the web address yourself; do not log in from links in messages or ads.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi and shared computers. If you must use a cyber cafe, log out and do not save the password in the browser.
  • Do not hand your credentials to coaching staff, agents or friends. They can alter details or see documents.
  • Never share an OTP with anyone, even if they claim to call from NTA or the helpline.
  • Keep your registered mobile and email active, since recovery relies on them.

The same account is also where identity-related fields live. If the 2027 form again asks for Aadhaar or APAAR details, as reports said happened in 2026, your account security matters even more; see the APAAR ID and Aadhaar page. For photo issues after login, see the photo and signature guide.

JEE Main 2027 Login and Recovery – FAQs

Common questions about application number, password and login errors

1
How do I log in to the JEE Main portal?
On the 2026 portal, you open the candidate login section at jeemain.nta.nic.in, enter your application number and the password you created, and submit. The 2026 Information Bulletin says candidates log in directly with the system-generated Application Number and the chosen Password. It does not describe a captcha step, so any captcha on screen is a portal detail you simply follow. The 2027 portal will be confirmed once registration opens.
2
I forgot my password. What can I do?
The 2026 Information Bulletin lists three ways to reset a password: using the security question and answer you chose during form filling, using a verification code sent by SMS to your registered mobile number, or using a reset link sent by email to your registered email address. Candidates can also change their password after logging in.
3
I forgot my application number. Is there a way to recover it?
The 2026 Information Bulletin and FAQs do not describe a self-service application number recovery tool, so we cannot confirm one officially. Look first in your registration email and SMS and on the confirmation page PDF, where the number is printed. If you still cannot find it, write to NTA at jeemain@nta.ac.in or call 011-40759000 or 011-69227700, as the bulletin says all correspondence should carry the application number.
4
The OTP or reset link is not arriving. What now?
Check mobile coverage, that the number is the one you registered, and your email spam folder. The portal can be slow when traffic is heavy at deadline time, so wait and retry rather than clicking repeatedly. If it still fails, try another reset option (security question, SMS or email) and then contact the NTA helpline numbers 011-40759000 or 011-69227700, or jeemain@nta.ac.in.
5
What are the password rules?
The 2026 Information Bulletin sets this policy: 8 to 13 characters, with at least one upper case letter, one lower case letter, one number and one special character from !@#$%^&*-. The 2027 bulletin may repeat it, but check the instructions on the password screen.
6
Can someone else log in for me?
Anyone with your application number and password can log in, which is exactly why you should not share them. Cyber cafes and agents who fill forms for candidates often keep credentials. If a third party registered for you, change the password and contact details if the portal allows it.
7
Are there fake JEE Main login pages?
Imitation sites exist for most big exams. Type jeemain.nta.nic.in yourself, check the address bar before entering credentials, and treat any call, message or email asking for your password or OTP as a scam. NTA's staff do not ask for your password.
