JEE Main 2027
Joint Entrance Examination (Main)
JEE Main is the national engineering and architecture entrance conducted by NTA twice a year. Its rank decides admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes through JoSAA/CSAB, and its top scorers qualify for JEE Advanced.
- Conducted by
- National Testing Agency (NTA)
- Mode
- Computer Based Test (CBT); the Drawing Test of Paper 2A is on paper
- Frequency
- Twice a year (Session 1 in January, Session 2 in April); the better NTA score counts
- Duration
- 3 hours (3 hours 30 minutes if both B.Arch and B.Planning are taken)
JEE Main 2027 Preparation
Updated on 18 October 2026 · Compiled from official National Testing Agency notices
A sound JEE Main plan is built on NCERT, steady problem practice and regular timed mocks. The advice below is general strategy, not an NTA recommendation.
Core strategy
- Treat NCERT of Class 11 and 12 as the base, especially for Chemistry.
- Cover the official syllabus unit by unit and tick topics off against the NTA list.
- Solve previous years' JEE Main papers, shift by shift, to get a feel for the level.
- Attempt full-length mock tests in the real 9 AM or 3 PM slot at least once a week in the final two months.
- Plan to use both sessions: Session 1 as a real attempt and Session 2 to improve, since only the better score counts.
- Keep a log of errors and revise it weekly.
Subject-wise tips
| Subject | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| Physics | Mechanics, electrostatics, current electricity, modern physics and units/dimensions; derive formulae rather than memorise; practise numerical problems for Section B |
| Chemistry | NCERT line by line for Inorganic; organic reaction mechanisms and named reactions; physical chemistry numericals on mole concept, equilibrium and electrochemistry |
| Mathematics | Calculus, coordinate geometry, algebra, vectors and 3D, matrices; speed in calculation and careful sign handling |
Suggested books
- NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for Class 11 and 12.
- Concepts of Physics by H C Verma for Physics.
- A standard problem book of your choice for each subject, plus previous years' papers for practice.
- Choose one source per topic and finish it instead of collecting many books.
Month-by-month plan to January 2027
| Period | Focus |
|---|---|
| October 2026 | Finish pending Class 11 and 12 syllabus; submit the application form as soon as the window opens |
| November 2026 | Complete first revision; start chapter-wise tests; keep documents scanned |
| December 2026 | Revise formulae and NCERT Chemistry; begin weekly full mocks |
| Early January 2027 | Two or three mocks a week; analyse errors; light revision; admit card checks |
| Session 1 (reported 22-30 Jan 2027) | Stay calm, follow the exam-day checklist, avoid new topics |
| February to March 2027 | Review Session 1 result, fix weak units, plan Session 2 and Board exams |
| April 2027 (expected) | Session 2: final revision and mocks |
The January 2027 dates are reported and tentative; adjust the plan once the bulletin is published.
Mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring Board exams or NCERT.
- Leaving Section B to the end without practice.
- Guessing numerical answers despite the -1 negative marking.
- Attempting too many new books in the last month.
- Applying at the last minute and facing a payment or upload problem.

Frequently asked questions
Should I appear in both sessions?
It is usually useful, since only the better of your two NTA scores is considered and a second attempt costs no extra attempt in terms of years.
When should I start for JEE Main 2027?
As early as possible on the 2026 syllabus; the overlap with 2027 has historically been high, but verify against the 2027 bulletin.
