About TNEA

TNEA stands for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions. It is the centralised online counselling run by the Directorate of Technical Education for B.E. and B.Tech seats in Tamil Nadu colleges, and it has no entrance test of its own. Merit is calculated from Class 12 marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. It suits Tamil Nadu students and eligible outside candidates who want a state engineering seat on the basis of board marks. Seats are allotted over main rounds plus supplementary counselling, with special reservations such as the government school quota. The 2026 cycle ran from May to September 2026, and the 2027 schedule has not been announced.

What TNEA actually is

TNEA stands for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions. It is run by the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Chennai, and uses an online portal, tneaonline.org, for registration, certificate upload, rank list, choice filling and seat allotment.

Unlike JEE Main, KCET or TS EAPCET, nobody writes a TNEA paper. Your Class 12 board marks are converted into an aggregate score out of 200, a rank list is published, and seats are allotted round by round in rank order.

The Tamil Nadu government's schedule for each year is issued as 'proposed dates' subject to AICTE approval, so dates can move.

Why it matters

Tamil Nadu has one of the largest engineering college networks in India, from Anna University's CEG, MIT and ACT campuses in Chennai to PSG Tech, CIT, GCT and Thiagarajar. Almost all of them admit their state-quota seats only through TNEA.

Because merit comes from board marks, your Class 12 percentage in Maths, Physics and Chemistry is the whole story. Maths carries double the weight of Physics or Chemistry.
