2027 Rule Not Yet Announced

JEE Main 2027 APAAR ID and Aadhaar Requirement

What APAAR ID is, how to get one, what Aadhaar and DigiLocker verification involved in 2026, and what to do if you have neither ready.

Short Answer

As of mid-October 2026, NTA has not opened JEE Main 2027 registration or released the Information Bulletin, so nobody can state the 2027 rule officially. For JEE Main 2026 we checked the official Information Bulletin and NTA's FAQs (both on jeemain.nta.nic.in): APAAR ID was not mandatory (FAQ 17: "No."), and the identity step offered Aadhaar e-KYC, with a scanned identity-proof upload for candidates who did not verify through Aadhaar or DigiLocker. Details about later notices, such as the photo verification certificate, come from news reports and are marked as such.

What APAAR ID Is

APAAR means Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It is a permanent 12-digit student ID introduced under the national One Nation One Student ID initiative and connected to the Academic Bank of Credits. Its purpose is to keep a single, portable record of your academic journey, so that marksheets, scholarships and credits can be verified digitally instead of through paper copies.

For JEE Main, the interest in it is practical: if your APAAR record is complete, your school and board details can be matched without manual typing, which in theory reduces data-entry errors in the academic section of the form. Some coaching sites argue that it also reduces rejection risk, but that is their reading, not an NTA statement we could verify. In the 2026 form the APAAR step sat between the identity step and the exam and centre details, and the bulletin's replica shows a separate qualification page where you still enter your Class 10 and Class 12 details.

How to Create an APAAR ID

  1. Ask your school office whether APAAR generation has already been done for your class. Many schools completed it in bulk with parental consent forms.
  2. If not, submit the school's consent form signed by a parent or guardian, along with the identity details the school requests. Aadhaar-based details are commonly used.
  3. Check that your name, date of birth and gender in the school record match your Aadhaar and Class 10 certificate. Fix errors at school level first.
  4. Once generated, the ID is typically available through your DigiLocker account. Open DigiLocker with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to retrieve the 12-digit number.
  5. Note the number down and keep a screenshot, ready for the form.

Processes differ by state and board and may change, so treat this as a general outline and rely on your school and the official ABC and DigiLocker help pages. A droppers' case, where the school record is a year or two old, is covered in our guide for droppers and repeaters.

Aadhaar and DigiLocker Verification in 2026

The 2026 bulletin's form replica shows the Identity Type page: you choose Aadhaar, tick a consent statement saying you voluntarily share your Aadhaar number to establish identity for the examination by matching personal identification details in Aadhaar records, enter the Aadhaar number twice and a captcha, and then complete an e-KYC page with a one-time password sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile. The page warns that you cannot change the name after Aadhaar authentication, so check the details before proceeding. The bulletin advises candidates to update their Aadhaar card with a recent photograph, name, date of birth, gender and address, and repeats this advice for verification at the examination centre.

Three official FAQ points matter here. FAQ 9 says documents available in DigiLocker can be uploaded. FAQ 16 says a name difference between the Class 10 marksheet and Aadhaar does not affect candidature. FAQ 19 says that if the live photograph does not match the Aadhaar photograph, NTA reviews it and informs the candidate by e-mail or text message in case of a major discrepancy; it does not by itself cancel the form. Exam cities, by contrast, are chosen from the present and permanent addresses you enter in the form (bulletin Para 5.1), so we do not rely on a claim, seen on some sites, that Aadhaar addresses drive centre allocation.

OTP is the practical bottleneck. The mobile number linked to Aadhaar must be active and with you when you register (FAQ 15). If it is a parent's or an old number, sort that out at an Aadhaar centre before the window opens, since it takes time and you do not want to be doing it on deadline day. Your photograph also feeds into this check; see the photo and signature page for preparing it.

If You Have No Aadhaar or No APAAR ID

No APAAR ID. In the 2026 cycle APAAR was not mandatory (FAQ 17) and the form asked a Yes or No question. Do not delay your registration to chase one. If you can get it in time, enter it; if not, proceed.

No Aadhaar. This is the case needing care. The 2026 bulletin provides for a scanned identity proof (JPG/JPEG, 10 to 200 KB) from candidates who verify identity by methods other than Aadhaar or DigiLocker, and does not call Aadhaar compulsory. News reports (not an NTA page we could open) say that candidates who registered that way were asked in late December 2025 or early January 2026 to download a photo verification certificate from their login, attach a recent photograph, get it signed by the school or college head and upload the scanned PDF; the deadline was reported as 7 January 2026, later extended to 15 January 2026, with a printed copy to carry to the exam centre. Another report said Class-I gazetted officers could also sign. If 2027 offers that route, start the signature early.

NRI and foreign candidates. Their identity route is different (NTA's 2026 FAQ 14 tells OCI/PIO candidates to enter 111111 in the pin code field of the address); see our page for NRI and foreign candidates.

Whatever route applies, contact details in the form were reported as locked after submission, so enter them carefully (more on that in the step-by-step form guide).

Readiness Checklist Before Registration Opens

  • Aadhaar card number and the mobile number linked to it, with the phone in hand for OTP.
  • Name and date of birth identical across Aadhaar and Class 10 certificate, or a plan to correct them.
  • Updated Aadhaar address, if your current address differs.
  • DigiLocker account created and logged in at least once.
  • APAAR ID number, if your school has generated it.
  • If you plan to use a non-Aadhaar ID, a headmaster or principal who can sign a photo verification form quickly.
  • Webcam or phone camera and good light for a live photo.

Your state of Class 12 eligibility is a separate entry from identity; read about the state code of eligibility too.

Where Identity Is Checked, Start to Finish

Identity checks do not end at the form. Based on the 2026 bulletin, these are the four checkpoints and what each one wants from you:

CheckpointWhat is checkedPrepare
Application formAadhaar e-KYC by OTP, or scanned ID proof; live photograph; optional APAAR IDActive Aadhaar-linked mobile; scanned ID if not using Aadhaar; camera or phone for live photo
NTA reviewNTA may verify candidate details and photographs and reviews photo mismatchesA recent photograph; check e-mail and SMS regularly, as the bulletin advises
Exam centreOriginal valid photo ID plus matching photograph on the attendance sheetOne original ID from the bulletin's list; Aadhaar (with photograph) or e-Aadhaar is on it, so are PAN, voter ID, passport, school ID, Class XII admit card and a photo bank passbook
Counselling (JoSAA/CSAB)Documents supporting identification, date of birth, qualifying exam, state of eligibility, category and disabilityClass 10 certificate for date of birth and original category certificates; the bulletin says failing to produce authentic documents may mean not being considered

Two warnings apply. First, the bulletin says candidates must upload their own photograph, signature and certificates, and using someone else's is treated as unfair means. Second, it says tampering with an admit card, result or scorecard, or manipulating Aadhaar or other documents, is also unfair means. Sort out genuine data errors early rather than working around them. For counselling-stage document rules see the category certificate page.

Fixing Aadhaar Details Before You Register

The bulletin tells candidates to update Aadhaar with their recent photograph, name, date of birth, gender and address, following UIDAI guidelines. Updates through UIDAI can take time, and the JEE Main form locks parts of your data once identity is authenticated, so do this before registration opens, not during it. A sensible order of work:

  1. Compare your Aadhaar name and date of birth with your Class 10 certificate. The form asks you to fill personal details as printed on the Class 10 pass certificate or marksheet, so the certificate is the reference.
  2. If your Aadhaar photograph is very old, update it. A live photograph that looks nothing like it will be reviewed by NTA and could prompt an e-mail or message asking for more proof.
  3. Confirm the mobile number linked to Aadhaar is yours or a parent's who will be with you, and that it receives SMS.
  4. Create or log in to DigiLocker, because FAQ 9 says documents in DigiLocker are valid for the form and it removes the need to scan some papers.
  5. Decide on APAAR: enter it if you already have it, and skip it otherwise.
  6. Keep the school contact who could sign a photo verification certificate, in case you end up in the non-Aadhaar route.

Once registration opens, the step-by-step guide shows the order of pages, the correction window page explains which identity details could be edited in 2026 (reported only for non-Aadhaar candidates), and registration last date tracks the deadline. If something fails, see helpline and grievance and the Information Bulletin page.

JEE Main 2027 APAAR ID and Aadhaar – FAQs

Common questions about identity verification and APAAR ID for JEE Main

1
Is APAAR ID mandatory for JEE Main 2027?
Not known for 2027, because NTA has not released the 2027 bulletin as of mid-October 2026. For JEE Main 2026 the answer was no: NTA's official 2026 FAQs (question 17, 'Is APAAR ID mandatory?') answer simply 'No.' The application form had an APAAR ID step with a Yes or No choice, and if you chose Yes you entered and confirmed the 12-digit number. Check the 2027 bulletin before assuming the same.
2
Was Aadhaar mandatory in the 2026 cycle?
The 2026 bulletin did not make Aadhaar the only route. Its Step 2 text asks for a scanned identity proof (JPG/JPEG, 10 to 200 KB) from candidates who verify their identity by methods other than Aadhaar or DigiLocker, and the form's identity page offered Aadhaar with e-KYC OTP as one option. The bulletin and FAQs do not use the word mandatory for Aadhaar, but Aadhaar e-KYC was the primary route, and media reported extra photo verification for those who registered without it. Follow the 2027 bulletin.
3
What is APAAR ID?
APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It is a lifelong 12-digit academic ID for students under the One Nation One Student ID initiative, linked to the Academic Bank of Credits and usually created through your school with parental consent.
4
How do I create an APAAR ID?
The usual route is through your school. The school collects parental consent and Aadhaar-based details, and the ID is generated and shared through the student's DigiLocker account. You can also look for the APAAR option on the official ABC or DigiLocker portals. Procedures can vary by state and board, so ask your school office first.
5
What if I do not have an Aadhaar card?
In the 2026 cycle the bulletin allowed candidates to upload a scanned identity proof instead. The accepted IDs at the exam centre included school ID, PAN, voter ID, passport and Class XII admit card with photograph. Media reports said candidates who registered with non-Aadhaar ID were later asked to upload a photo verification certificate signed by their school or college head, first due 7 January 2026 and extended to 15 January 2026. We could not open NTA's own notice, so treat those details as reported. The 2027 rule is unconfirmed, so read the bulletin and use the helpline if in doubt.
6
Does my name on Aadhaar have to match my Class 10 certificate?
Not strictly. NTA's 2026 FAQ 16 says a difference in name between the Class 10 marksheet and the Aadhaar card does not affect candidature. Even so, the form asks you to fill details as printed on the Class 10 pass certificate or marksheet, and you should fix real mismatches before counselling, where documents are checked again.
7
Does the mobile number linked to Aadhaar matter?
Yes. NTA's 2026 FAQ 15 says the OTP is sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, and the candidate must ensure that number is active and accessible. If it is not, update it at an Aadhaar centre well ahead of the registration window.
8
Will not having an APAAR ID affect my JoSAA counselling?
We found no official statement linking APAAR ID to JoSAA seat allocation. For the JEE Main form, NTA's 2026 FAQ says it is not mandatory. Treat it as optional, and do not delay registration to obtain one.
