JEE Main 2027 Registration for Droppers and Repeaters
Attempt limit, year-of-passing entry, board details, compartment cases, documents and the category and state-code traps that catch repeaters.
The Attempt Rule in Plain Words
The JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin does not use the word attempts for this rule. Para 3.3 (Year of Appearance in Qualifying Examination) says candidates who passed Class XII or equivalent in 2024 or 2025, or were appearing in 2026, were eligible, and those who passed in 2023 or before were not. In effect that is a three-year window counted from your passing year. With two sessions per year, a candidate in that window could take up to six sessions, but that figure is our arithmetic and is not printed in the bulletin. Para 3.1 set no age limit, though an institute may have its own age criteria at admission.
As of mid-October 2026, NTA has not released the JEE Main 2027 Information Bulletin, so nothing below is an official 2027 statement. If the 2026 pattern carries over, the worked examples are as follows. Verify them against the bulletin at jeemain.nta.nic.in once it is out.
| Class 12 passed in | JEE Main years open (if the 2026 pattern repeats) | 2027 status (our inference) |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 or earlier | Not eligible for JEE Main 2026 under Para 3.3 | Not eligible |
| 2024 | 2024, 2025, 2026 (2024 passers were eligible in 2026) | Window likely closed |
| 2025 | 2025, 2026, 2027 | 2027 would be the last year |
| 2026 | 2026, 2027, 2028 | Second year |
| 2027 (appearing) | 2027, 2028, 2029 | First year |
For the full eligibility picture, including subjects and marks requirements for admission, see the JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria page. Note that appearing in JEE Main and qualifying for NIT or IIIT admission are different things: admission-stage marks criteria apply separately.
Filling the Class 12 Section as a Repeater
The Class 12 block is where repeaters most often slip. Work through it in this order.
- Status. Choose "passed" if your Class 12 result is already declared, including when you are taking an improvement or reappearing in some subjects (2026 FAQ no. 10), and "appearing" only if you are in your board exam year.
- Year of passing. Use the year your result was first declared "pass" in that examination (Para 3.3), as printed on your first passing marksheet, not the year you started coaching, the year of an improvement attempt or the year you are applying.
- Board and roll number. Pick the board that issued the marksheet. For boards other than CBSE, the 2026 FAQ (no. 8) says to fill in any of the details your board allotted, such as registration, enrollment or roll number. Enter it exactly as printed.
- Qualifying examination. Para 3.2 lists the accepted qualifications, including state and central boards, NIOS with a minimum of five subjects, AIU-equivalent examinations and a three-year AICTE-recognised diploma. An examination from outside the list needs an AIU equivalence certificate.
- Subjects for admission. Appearing in JEE Main and being admitted are separate. For NIT+ system admission through Paper 1 rank, Para 5.8.1 of the 2026 bulletin asked for Physics, Mathematics, a language, one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or a Technical Vocational subject, and any other subject. JoSAA/CSAB can modify these rules.
- Candidate type. The 2026 bulletin we read has no separate repeater or dropper field; eligibility is determined by your passing year and the state code. If the 2027 form adds one, answer it honestly.

Improvement, Compartment and Special Cases
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Improvement attempt in marks or percentage in a later year | Official: the passing year is the year of the first 'pass' and an improvement attempt is not the first attempt (2026 bulletin Para 3.3). Select 'Passed' (2026 FAQ no. 10). Keep both marksheets. |
| Passed some subjects in a later year (compartment type case) | Official example in Para 3.3: Physics, Chemistry and Biology passed in 2023, Mathematics passed in 2024, so 2023 is the passing year. Ask the NTA helpdesk in writing if your case is different. |
| Result of Class 12 awaited at registration | Official: candidates appearing in the Class 12 exam of the cycle year are eligible and can enter their roll, registration or enrollment number (Para 3.3, Note 3.3). |
| Failed Class 12 and re-appeared | The passing year is the year the result is first declared pass. Confirm the wording in the 2027 bulletin if your first result was a fail. |
| Switched from a state board to NIOS or the reverse | Use the board of the qualifying exam you passed; keep both certificates. The state code follows the State where you first passed (Para 3.4); for NIOS it follows the study centre State. |
| Gap year with no JEE attempt | The 2026 rule is tied to the passing year, so skipped years are not carried forward. Count your remaining years from your passing year. |
| Took Class 12 abroad or from an equivalent qualification | Para 3.2 (x) requires an AIU equivalence certificate for a board not listed. OCI candidates who passed Class 12 abroad are eligible for All India quota seats but not Home State quota (Para 3.4). See the NRI and foreign candidates guidance. |
Rows citing a paragraph reflect the 2026 bulletin text; the advice beyond that is ours and not an official interpretation. NTA's 2027 bulletin text prevails.
Category and State-Code Traps for Repeaters
Repeaters often carry old paperwork and old assumptions into a new year. Two fields deserve extra care.
Category. The 2026 bulletin (Chapter 4) says OBC-NCL candidates must be on the central list and creamy-layer candidates are treated as General, and that GEN-EWS follows the Government of India OM dated 17 January 2019. NTA's 2025 advisory asked for category certificates to be updated and valid before applying. A certificate you used last year may therefore need renewal, since eligibility can change with family circumstances. The form took only the certificate number, date of issue and issuing authority (FAQ no. 25), and the original is checked at seat allocation (Para 5.8.3). Apply for a fresh certificate well before counselling. The rules are discussed in our category certificate guide for OBC-NCL and EWS.
State code of eligibility. Para 3.4 of the 2026 bulletin says the code is the State from which you passed Class XII or equivalent, and does NOT depend on native place or residence. Its example: a candidate who took Class XII from a Delhi institution but lives in Noida has Delhi as the code. If you passed in one State and took improvement in another, the State of first passing counts. Taking a drop year in Kota, Delhi or Hyderabad therefore does not change your state of eligibility. See state code of eligibility explained before selecting.
Documents and Planning for Repeaters
- Class 10 certificate for name, parents' names and date of birth, as for any applicant.
- Class 12 marksheet (and compartment or improvement marksheet, if any) showing roll number and passing year. The 2026 form took the details, not an upload, but keep the marksheet for seat allocation.
- Valid category certificate details (number, date of issue, issuing authority) if claiming a reservation, and the original ready for counselling.
- Any earlier JEE Main application number and password. The 2026 bulletin says more than one application form is treated as Unfair Means and cancels the result, so recover the old login instead of registering again.
- A recent photograph and signature in the specified format (2026: photo JPG/JPEG 10 to 200 kb, signature JPG/JPEG 10 to 100 kb), not reused files that fail new specifications.
- A Class 10 certificate or marksheet as a PDF (2026: 50 to 300 kb).
- Aadhaar or another identity route. In 2026 APAAR ID was not mandatory (FAQ no. 17) and DigiLocker documents were valid (FAQ no. 9); check the 2027 bulletin.
Repeaters should also resist the urge to skip Session 1 on the logic that more time means a better score. In 2026 the FAQ said candidates had to apply separately for each session, though the same application number was used for both, and the bulletin said that if a candidate appears in both sessions the best NTA score is used for ranking. Our comparison of Session 1 and Session 2 registration shows how they differ. Reported tentative dates are covered on the exam dates page. Because your eligibility depends on your passing year, a skipped session is not banked for later, so apply on time via the registration last date guidance, and use the step-by-step form guide as you fill.
Official Rules That Affect Repeaters Most
| Topic | 2026 bulletin or notice says | Why a repeater cares |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible passing years | 2024, 2025 or appearing in 2026 (Para 3.3) | Fixes how many more cycles you have |
| Passing year definition | Year the result was first declared pass; improvement does not change it | A better improvement marksheet does not reset the clock |
| Age | No age limit (Para 3.1) | Age alone cannot disqualify you from sitting the exam |
| Two sessions | Best of the NTA scores used for ranking if you appear in both (Para 1.3) | A weak Session 1 does not count against you |
| Aadhaar and name | Aadhaar to be updated with name and date of birth as per Class 10 certificate; a Class 10 versus Aadhaar name difference does not affect candidature (advisory 29 Sep 2025; FAQ no. 16) | Old Aadhaar details are a common drop-year mismatch |
| APAAR ID | Not mandatory (FAQ no. 17) | Do not delay your form waiting for it |
| Duplicate application | Not accepted, result cancelled, treated as Unfair Means (Dates at a Glance, Para 2) | Reusing your old login matters if you applied before |
| State code | State where Class XII was first passed (Para 3.4) | Home-state quota depends on it, not on your coaching city |
A first-time Aadhaar or photo mismatch can delay your admit card, so read the APAAR ID and Aadhaar page and the photo and signature guide, and know where to get help from the helpline and grievance page. Mistakes are listed on the registration mistakes page.
