How to Fill the JEE Main 2027 Application Form, Step by Step
Ten steps from registration to the confirmation page, with exactly what to keep ready at each one.
Before You Begin: What This Walkthrough Is
As of mid-October 2026, NTA has not opened Session 1 registration for JEE Main 2027 and has not released the Information Bulletin. This walkthrough is therefore built on the JEE Main 2026 Information Bulletin (Para 3, Application Procedure), its FAQs and NTA's public notices, which are the best guide to what you will see. Field names, mandatory items and file limits can change, so treat the bulletin at jeemain.nta.nic.in as the final word.
In the last two cycles the registration window opened in late October (28 October 2024 and 31 October 2025). That makes late October or early November 2026 a reasonable expectation, but it is not an official date. Our notification date tracker will carry the confirmed date once NTA announces it.
The 2026 Bulletin names exactly three steps. Step 1: Registration Form (register, create a password and security question, receive the system-generated Application Number). Step 2: Application Form (log in and fill personal details, apply for the paper, choose examination cities, give educational qualifications, upload images and documents). Step 3: Fee Payment (online, after which the Confirmation Page can be printed). The ten rows below are our own breakdown of those three official steps into smaller actions, not NTA's numbering.
Inside Step 2, the Bulletin's replica of the form (Appendix IX) shows these screens: PwD/PwBD page, identity type details (Aadhaar or other), Aadhaar e-KYC, APAAR ID page, Exam and Centre Details, Qualification Details, Additional Details, Emergency Contact Details, Live Photo Capture, Upload Document, Final Submit Review, Candidate Email Verification and then the Fee Payment page. The exact order and names can change in 2027.

Steps 1 to 3: Registration and Credentials
Step 1. Open the official site. Go to jeemain.nta.nic.in directly by typing it, not through an advertisement or a forwarded link. Download the Information Bulletin and read the eligibility, paper and fee sections before you start. Use a laptop or desktop; phones make uploads and the final review harder.
Step 2. New registration. This is the Bulletin's Step 1, the Registration Form. Enter the personal details asked, create a password and choose a security question and its answer; the Bulletin does not list every registration field, so follow the screen. Type your name exactly as it appears on your Class 10 certificate. Use a mobile number and email that you will still control months from now, because the application number, OTPs and the confirmation reach you there. Do not use a coaching centre's or a cyber cafe's contact details.
Step 3. Save your credentials. After the personal details are submitted, a system-generated application number is created. The Bulletin says it is needed to complete the remaining steps, for all future correspondence, and for both sessions of the cycle. Your password must be 8 to 13 characters with at least one upper case letter, one lower case letter, one number and one special character from !@#$%^&*-. Write the number, password and security answer down immediately. If you ever lose them, our guide to login, forgot password and application number recovery explains the recovery routes, but it is far easier not to lose them.

Steps 4 to 6: Personal, Academic and Identity Details
Step 4. Personal details. Log in with your application number and password. Fill in your parents' names, category, any disability status, and your permanent and present addresses with PIN codes (these two addresses decide which exam cities you can pick, and addresses cannot be changed in the correction window). Foreign nationals (OCI/PIO) put 111111 in the PIN code field, per the 2026 FAQ. The category you pick must be backed by a valid certificate: the 2026 FAQ says the certificate itself is NOT uploaded; you enter its number, date of issue and issuing authority, or the acknowledgement/receipt number, date and authority if you have applied but not received it, and you produce the certificate at document verification during admission. For OBC-NCL and EWS especially, read our page on category certificates. PwD/PwBD candidates: UDID details are verified from the UDID portal; those without a UDID card upload a disability certificate (PDF, 50 to 300 KB).
Step 5. Academic details and state code. Enter your Class 10 and Class 12 details: board, school, year and status (passed or appearing; the 2026 FAQ says improvement or reappearing candidates choose "Passed"). Candidates appearing in Class 12 in the cycle year may give the roll, registration or enrolment number their board allotted. You will also give the state code of eligibility, which the 2026 Bulletin ties to the State from where you passed Class 12, not to your native place or residence. This one choice affects your quota at JoSAA, so read the full explanation on the state code of eligibility page first.
Step 6. Identity fields. The 2026 form offered identity verification through Aadhaar (with an e-KYC page and an OTP to the mobile number linked to Aadhaar), DigiLocker documents, or another identity proof uploaded as a JPG/JPEG of 10 to 200 KB. The 2026 FAQ says APAAR ID is not mandatory, and that a name mismatch between the Class 10 marksheet and Aadhaar does not affect candidature. Check the bulletin for the 2027 position. Our page on the APAAR ID and Aadhaar requirement collects what is known. If your APAAR ID is not generated yet, ask your school now rather than during the window.
Steps 7 and 8: Choices and Uploads
Step 7. Paper, medium and exam cities. Select the paper or papers you want (B.E./B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Planning), the medium of the question paper, and your exam city preferences. The 2026 Bulletin allows up to four cities in order of priority, limited to the State of your permanent or present address. Pick cities that are realistic for you to reach, since a different city can be allotted for administrative or logistic reasons. The full logic is on our exam city choice page.
Step 8. Photo, signature and documents. The 2026 Bulletin set these limits: a recent colour passport-size photograph with 80% of the face (including ears, no mask) visible against a white background, JPG/JPEG, 10 to 200 KB; a signature, JPG/JPEG, 10 to 100 KB; the Class 10 or equivalent certificate or marksheet as a PDF of 50 to 300 KB; identity proof (only if you do not verify through Aadhaar or DigiLocker) as JPG/JPEG, 10 to 200 KB; and the disability/UDID certificate as a PDF of 50 to 300 KB. Follow the 2027 bulletin figures and read the photo and signature guide. The form also asks for a live photograph through your webcam or, if your device has none, by scanning a QR code with a phone or tablet; use a light-coloured background with proper lighting. Upload only your own photograph, signature and certificates: using someone else's is treated as unfair means, and no correction facility for these is promised.
Pre-upload checklist
- Photo is recent, clear, face fully visible, no cap or dark glasses
- Signature is on white paper with a dark pen, not typed or in capitals if the rules ask for a normal signature
- Both files are in the format named in the bulletin and under the size limit
- Name and date of birth in your form match the Class 10 certificate
- Certificates are scanned legibly, with no cut edges, and the Class 10 PDF is within 50 to 300 KB
- Your device has a working camera, or a phone is ready to scan the QR code for the live photo
- The mobile number linked to Aadhaar is active, if you verify through Aadhaar
Steps 9 and 10: Review, Pay and Confirm
Step 9. Review and pay. Before paying, open the preview and read every field slowly, ideally with a parent beside you. Correction options are limited later, and the window is short. NTA's notices fixed the 2026 one-time correction windows at 1 to 2 December 2025 (Session 1) and 27 to 28 February 2026 (Session 2). Mobile number, email, addresses, emergency contact and photograph could not be changed. The 2026 fee for one paper (B.E./B.Tech, B.Arch or B.Planning) at a centre in India, excluding gateway charges and GST, was: General male Rs 1,000, General female Rs 800; Gen-EWS/OBC-NCL male Rs 900, female Rs 800; SC/ST/PwD/PwBD Rs 500; Third Gender Rs 500. Centres outside India cost more (Rs 5,000 for General male). Two papers cost more. Check the bulletin for the exact 2027 figures. Our fee structure page explains the pattern.
The 2026 Bulletin allows only online payment by net banking, credit card, debit card or UPI, with processing charges and GST extra. Do not refresh or press back during the transaction. If the Confirmation Page is not generated after payment, the Bulletin says the transaction is cancelled: contact the bank for a refund and make another payment, and NTA reconciles any duplicate payments after the final result. Our page on failed payments and refunds walks through this.
Step 10. Download the confirmation page. After a successful payment you can download the confirmation page. This is your proof of application. Save the PDF to your device and an email account, print two copies, and keep them with your Class 10 and Class 12 documents. The page carries your application number, which you will need for the exam city slip and admit card.
What the 2026 Cycle Actually Looked Like
| Item | Session 1, 2026 | Session 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Application window | 31 October to 27 November 2025 | 1 to 25 February 2026; re-opened 12 to 13 March 2026 |
| Correction window | 1 to 2 December 2025 | 27 to 28 February 2026; none after the March re-opening |
| City slip | From 8 January 2026 | Notice of 21 March 2026 |
| Exam dates | 21 to 24 and 28 to 29 January 2026 | 2 to 8 April 2026 as per the city slip notice |
| Who applied how | Everyone registered fresh | Returning candidates logged in and chose paper, medium, cities and paid |
Two lessons follow from these notices. First, NTA stated that there would be no further extension of the last date before the correction windows opened, so plan to apply well before the last day; the later March re-opening was a special case and came with no correction facility. Second, NTA treats more than one application as unfair means, so never register a second time because you lost a password. Track the 2027 dates on our last date page, exam dates page and Information Bulletin page.
The 2026 correction notices also showed which fields could change. Name, father's name or mother's name: any one of them. Class 10 and Class 12 details, state code, paper, exam cities and medium: changeable, with any fee difference payable. Date of birth, gender, category, sub-category and signature: changeable. Mobile number, email, addresses, emergency contact and photograph: not changeable. Full list and the one-time rule are on the correction window page.
Special Cases While Filling the Form
- Droppers and repeaters: choose status "Passed" for improvement or reappearing; see the droppers page for the repeat-attempt details.
- Foreign nationals (OCI/PIO): enter 111111 in the PIN code field; see the NRI and foreign candidates page.
- B.Arch or B.Planning: Paper 2A and 2B each carry their own fee, and taking both Paper 2A and 2B has a combined fee; see the Paper 2 registration page.
- PwD and scribe candidates: follow Chapter 4 of the Bulletin and the scribe undertaking in Appendix V, leaving centre details blank for the exam day; see the PwD and scribe page.
- No document, including the Confirmation Page, is to be sent to NTA by post, fax, WhatsApp, email or by hand.

What to Do After Submission
Submission is not the end of your tasks. Check the confirmation page against your documents the same day, while the correction window is still ahead. Then track the sequence NTA has followed in past cycles: correction window, exam city intimation slip, admit card, exam, provisional answer key and result. Our admit card guide covers what comes next.
If you spot a mistake, read the common registration mistakes to see whether it is fixable and how. Never ask a third party to log in and fix things on your behalf using your password; the portal is meant for the candidate.
