JEE Main 2027 Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning) Registration

Who can apply, how to choose papers in the same form, what it costs, how the drawing test works and where counselling happens.

Paper 2 Is Part of the Same Form

JEE Main has three papers: Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech, Paper 2A for B.Arch and Paper 2B for B.Planning. There is no separate registration portal for architecture or planning. In the 2026 cycle, the candidate chose the paper or papers inside the single application form, and the fee depended on that choice. If you are interested in B.Arch or B.Planning, tick the paper at the time of the first application, since adding a paper later is not something to count on.

As of mid-October 2026, NTA has not opened JEE Main 2027 registration or released the Information Bulletin, so all numbers here are from the 2026 bulletin and are not 2027 rules. The 2027 cycle may keep the same structure, but confirm it in the bulletin. See our page on the JEE Main 2027 Information Bulletin for when to expect it, and the form-filling guide for the general steps.

Who Can Apply

The general JEE Main eligibility (qualifying exam, age and attempts) is the same for all papers; see the eligibility criteria page. For admission, the 2026 bulletin added programme-specific conditions.

  • B.Arch: Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus Chemistry, Biology, a technical vocational subject, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics or Business Studies, with at least 45% aggregate. A 10+3 diploma with Mathematics at 45% also qualifies. This follows the Gazette notification of 19 July 2023, which the bulletin quoted.
  • B.Planning: Pass in the qualifying exam with at least 50% in Mathematics and 50% in aggregate.

The bulletin also noted that institutes may have their own eligibility criteria, and that grievances about admission go to the counselling authorities. In practice, many centrally funded institutes ask for a higher aggregate than the minimum for the exam. The DASA 2026 brochure, for example, asked for 75% for foreign and NRI candidates. Check the JoSAA or CSAB rules each year.

Choosing Paper 2 as an addition to Paper 1 roughly doubled the fee in 2026, so decide in advance. If payment fails, follow the steps in our guide to failed payments and refunds. For the expected structure in 2027, see the registration fee page.

Attempting both papers takes 3 hours 30 minutes in one sitting, as in the 2026 bulletin, and PwD candidates who are eligible for a scribe get compensatory time. Mathematics and Aptitude are the common base, so the extra preparation for the second paper is the drawing or planning component. Session dates are covered under JEE Main 2027 exam dates.

The Drawing Test in Practice

The 2026 bulletin described the Drawing Test as a pen-and-paper test, attempted on an A4 drawing sheet, with two questions evaluated out of 100 marks. Unlike the rest of the paper, it has no negative marking. Because it is offline, you will likely handle a physical sheet while the other parts are on a computer. Read your admit card for what drawing and colouring materials you may carry and what is banned. Our admit card guide explains how to read those instructions.

Planning for the drawing test is partly a registration matter too. Choose an exam city and centre you can reach comfortably, since the test slot is long, and the allotted centre cannot be changed after allotment, as the 2026 FAQ stated. Read the exam city selection guide and note the application window from the registration last date page.

How Ranking and Counselling Work

Paper 2A and Paper 2B each give a separate NTA score and rank. For candidates who appear in both sessions, the 2026 bulletin said the merit list is prepared using NTA scores across the sessions. Ties are broken first by Mathematics, then Aptitude, then the Part III score, and then by the proportion of incorrect to correct answers.

Counselling is outside NTA. The 2026 bulletin said candidates are offered seats on their choices and ranks through a seat allocation process run by JoSAA or CSAB for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and it clarified that NTA is responsible only for conducting the exam. B.Arch seats in IITs follow a different route through JEE Advanced and its architecture aptitude test, which we mention only so you do not confuse it with the JEE Main route. Document checks, such as category and disability certificates, are done during the seat allocation.

JEE Main 2027 Paper 2A and 2B – FAQs

Common questions on B.Arch and B.Planning registration

1
Do I need a separate application form for B.Arch or B.Planning?
No. In the 2026 cycle the paper choice was made inside the single JEE Main application form. The form offered Paper 1, Paper 2A, Paper 2B or combinations, and the fee depended on the combination chosen. The bulletin also warned that multiple application forms by one candidate are not accepted and can lead to cancellation of the result.
2
Can I appear in Paper 2A and 2B together?
Yes. The 2026 bulletin allowed a candidate to take both, with a combined duration of 3 hours 30 minutes in each session, against 3 hours for a single paper. The combined paper includes Mathematics, Aptitude Test, Drawing Test and Planning-based questions. Check the 2027 bulletin for the same arrangement.
3
What is the Paper 2A pattern in the 2026 bulletin?
Paper 2A had 77 questions for 400 marks: Mathematics with 20 multiple-choice and 5 numerical-value questions (100 marks), an Aptitude Test of 50 questions (200 marks), and a Drawing Test of 2 questions (100 marks). Mathematics and Aptitude are computer-based, while the drawing test is on paper on an A4 drawing sheet. Marking was +4 and -1 for objective questions, with no negative marking for drawing.
4
What is the Paper 2B pattern?
Paper 2B had 100 questions for 400 marks, fully computer-based: Mathematics (25 questions, 100 marks), Aptitude Test (50 questions, 200 marks) and 25 Planning-based questions (100 marks). Negative marking of -1 applied to wrong answers in the objective parts.
5
What is the fee for Paper 2A or 2B?
In the 2026 bulletin, a single paper (Paper 1, 2A or 2B) cost the same: for a centre in India, ₹1,000 for General male, ₹800 for General female, ₹900 for Gen-EWS or OBC-NCL male, ₹800 for Gen-EWS or OBC-NCL female and ₹500 for SC, ST, PwD, PwBD and Third Gender candidates. Two or more papers cost more: ₹2,000 for General, Gen-EWS or OBC-NCL males, ₹1,600 for females in those groups and ₹1,000 for SC, ST, PwD, PwBD and Third Gender. Processing charges and GST are extra. The 2027 figures are not announced.
6
What qualification do I need for B.Arch?
The 2026 bulletin quoted a 2023 Gazette notification: Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry, Biology, a technical vocational subject, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practices, Engineering Graphics or Business Studies, with at least 45% aggregate, or a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics as a compulsory subject at 45%. Individual institutes and counselling bodies can set higher requirements.
7
How does counselling work for B.Arch and B.Planning?
NTA only conducts the exam and publishes scores and ranks. The 2026 bulletin said seats in NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, including planning and architecture schools, are allotted through JoSAA or CSAB on the basis of rank. Eligibility, seat matrix and the process are decided by those bodies and the institutes, not by NTA.
8
Do I have to carry my own drawing material?
Some sources say the admit card asks candidates to carry their own geometry box and colouring materials for the drawing test. We could not confirm the exact wording in the bulletin, so follow the instructions printed on your admit card for what to bring and what is prohibited.
