JEE Main 2027 Registration for PwD Candidates: UDID, Scribe and Compensatory Time
What persons with disabilities should arrange before registration opens, using the JEE Main 2026 rules as the guide.
Start Early: Certificates Take Time
For most candidates, the registration form is a few hours of work. For PwD candidates, the slow part is usually the paperwork behind it: a UDID card or disability certificate, and, where a scribe is needed, a certificate from a Government medical authority. As of mid-October 2026, NTA has not opened JEE Main 2027 registration or released the Information Bulletin. The 2026 bulletin is therefore our guide, and the 2027 version may change details. Confirm everything at jeemain.nta.nic.in once the bulletin is out.
If registration follows the pattern of the last two cycles, it could start around late October or early November, so any pending certificate work should start now. Our overall step-by-step form-filling guide covers the general process, and this page covers what is different for PwD candidates.
PwD, PwBD and the 40% Line
The 2026 bulletin quoted the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. A person with benchmark disability (PwBD) has not less than 40% of a specified disability, as certified by the certifying authority. PwBD candidates are eligible for 5% horizontal reservation within each of the General, Gen-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST seat categories at participating institutes.
A person with a specified disability below 40% is still a PwD under the Act but not a PwBD. For examinations, a 2022 Ministry memorandum allows such candidates a scribe and compensatory time if they have a documented limitation in writing. They do not get seat reservation for PwBD. This difference matters when you choose what to tick in the form, so be clear about which group you belong to before you start.

Documents and Uploads (2026 Pattern)
| Item | What the 2026 bulletin said |
|---|---|
| UDID or disability certificate | Upload as a PDF of 50 KB to 300 KB, clearly legible. UDID details are checked on the DePwD UDID portal; without a UDID card, upload a certificate in the proper format, which NTA may verify with the issuer |
| Medical certificate for scribe | Proforma at Appendix III (benchmark disability, from CMO, Civil Surgeon or Medical Superintendent of a Government institution) or Appendix IV (below 40%, multi-member medical authority) |
| Own scribe undertaking | Appendix V; fill all details except roll number, centre, district and state, which are completed at the exam centre |
| Standard documents | Photograph, signature, Class 10 certificate and identity verification as for all candidates |
| Category certificate | Number, date of issue and issuing authority are typed in; upload was not needed in 2026 but may be asked at admission |
Appendix numbers and file limits are from the 2026 bulletin. Photo and signature limits are covered separately in our document guide, and sources differ on some sizes, so use the 2027 bulletin.
Scribe Rules in Plain Language
Under the 2018 memorandum quoted in the bulletin, a scribe should be allowed to any benchmark disability candidate who has a limitation in writing, if the candidate wants one. Candidates with blindness, locomotor disability affecting both arms and cerebral palsy get the facility on request. For other benchmark disabilities, a medical certificate stating that the candidate cannot write and a scribe is essential is required.
The 2026 bulletin gave candidates two choices: bring their own scribe, who should be qualified one step below the candidate, or ask NTA for one. The scribe reads questions and enters answers as directed, and must not explain a question or suggest a solution. In JEE Main this matters because the test is computer-based. The Paper 2A drawing test is on paper, so check how the scribe facility applies to it in the 2027 bulletin, as the 2026 text we read did not spell it out.
Some secondary sources reported that in 2026 NTA opened a later window on the candidate portal for entering own-scribe details. We could not verify this on an official page, so do not assume it. Read the bulletin and the instructions on your city slip and admit card.
Compensatory Time
| Paper | Normal duration | With compensatory time (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) | 3 hours | 4 hours |
| Paper 2A (B.Arch) or 2B (B.Planning) | 3 hours | 4 hours |
| Paper 2A and 2B both | 3 hours 30 minutes | 4 hours 10 minutes |
The rule behind this is at least 20 minutes per hour, available to benchmark disability candidates who are eligible for a scribe, whether or not they use one. The bulletin warned that wrongly claiming a scribe or compensatory time can lead to exclusion from ranking, counselling and admission.
Fee, Category and Exam City
In 2026, SC, ST, PwD and PwBD candidates paid the concessional fee of ₹500 for one paper at a centre in India, with other amounts for combined papers and for centres outside India. Treat that as the previous cycle only and see our expected fee structure page. If you also belong to a reserved category, keep that certificate ready too, as explained in the category certificate guide.
The 2026 bulletin said NTA would try to consider the comfort and convenience of PwD candidates while allotting centres, but the city is still allotted by NTA from your choices. Pick cities with accessible travel and read the exam city selection guide before choosing. If something goes wrong with your facilities, see how to raise it on the helpline and grievance page.
