JEE Main Paper 2 Syllabus for 2027 – B.Arch & B.Planning Topics

A section-wise breakdown of the Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning) syllabus as in the 2026 cycle, for 2027 aspirants.

JEE Main 2027 syllabus status (17 October 2026)

NTA has not opened JEE Main 2027 registration or released a 2027 Information Bulletin. The official 2027 syllabus, including for Paper 2, is expected with that bulletin. Until then use the topics below as the 2026-cycle baseline. Track updates on the JEE Main 2027 syllabus page and the syllabus reduction update, and see the Paper 2 registration guide.

Understanding JEE Main Paper 2 Syllabus Structure

JEE Main Paper 2 is the entrance route for B.Arch and B.Planning admissions across NITs, IIITs, SPAs (Schools of Planning and Architecture), and other GFTIs (Government-Funded Technical Institutes). Unlike Paper 1, which focuses purely on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics for B.Tech aspirants, Paper 2 has two distinct variants: Paper 2A for B.Arch and Paper 2B for B.Planning. Both variants share a common Mathematics and Aptitude structure but diverge in their third component — a Drawing Test for B.Arch versus Planning-based objective questions for B.Planning.

Candidates should note that NTA publishes the syllabus document with each year's bulletin, so students must cross-check the final syllabus PDF released on jeemain.nta.nic.in before finalizing their preparation plan. The broad structure described here reflects the 2026 cycle (Paper 2A: 77 questions to attempt, 400 marks; Paper 2B: 100 questions, 400 marks) and the 2027 structure is not yet announced. The Mathematics syllabus for Paper 1 was pruned in recent years (for example Mathematical Induction and Mathematical Reasoning are reported as removed from Paper 1), so verify whether the same cuts apply to the Paper 2 Mathematics part. See the Paper 2 marking scheme for marks, and the Paper 2 details page for the full pattern.

Mathematics Syllabus in Detail

The Mathematics section for both Paper 2A and 2B is drawn from the Class 11 and 12 NCERT curriculum, broadly mirroring the core of Paper 1's syllabus but with a smaller question count. Important topics include Sets, Relations and Functions; Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations; Matrices and Determinants; Permutations and Combinations; Binomial Theorem; Sequences and Series; Limit, Continuity and Differentiability; Integral Calculus; Differential Equations; Coordinate Geometry (straight lines, circles, conic sections); Three-Dimensional Geometry; Vector Algebra; Statistics and Probability; and Trigonometry. Since this section carries fewer marks than it does in Paper 1, students preparing exclusively for B.Arch/B.Planning can focus on strong conceptual understanding rather than extensive numerical practice across every sub-topic.

Aptitude Test Syllabus in Detail

This is the section that distinguishes Paper 2 aspirants from Paper 1 aspirants the most, since it tests abilities not covered in standard PCM coaching. Key areas include: awareness of persons, places, buildings, and materials; texture related to architecture and build environment; visualizing three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional drawings; visualizing different sides of 3D objects; analytical reasoning; mental ability tests including logical diagrams and series completion; and general knowledge questions about landmark buildings, monuments, and their architects. Students are advised to study basic facts about famous Indian and global structures, and to practice spatial reasoning puzzles regularly.

Drawing Test Syllabus in Detail (Paper 2A only)

The Drawing Test is a pen-and-paper section where candidates must sketch given objects, scenes, or themes from memory or imagination. Evaluation criteria typically include the ability to sketch a given object or scene in its right proportion, visualize and draw the effects of light on objects and shadows cast on surroundings, ability to create a 2D and 3D composition using given shapes and forms, and general sense of colour, contrast, and harmony where colour questions are asked. Candidates should practice drawing everyday objects, urban scenes, human figures in context, and simple architectural forms within a strict time limit to build speed alongside accuracy.

Planning-Based Questions Syllabus in Detail (Paper 2B only)

The Planning section replaces Drawing for B.Planning aspirants and consists of objective-type questions. Topics typically include General Knowledge related to development issues in the country and world, thinking on social, physical, and economic planning basics, general mental ability applied to planning contexts, and awareness of terms and concepts used in urban and regional planning, such as land use, zoning, transportation planning and environmental sustainability. NTA does not list specific government schemes in the syllabus, but awareness of urban programmes such as AMRUT, Smart Cities Mission and PMAY is a sensible way to prepare. Reading newspapers regularly and following government policy updates on urban development helps considerably with this section.

Frequently Asked Questions – JEE Main Paper 2 Syllabus

Common queries about the Paper 2A and Paper 2B syllabus

1
Is the Mathematics syllabus for Paper 2 the same as Paper 1?
The Mathematics syllabus for Paper 2A and 2B draws from largely the same Class 11 and 12 topics as Paper 1 — Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, Vectors, and Statistics. Paper 2 carries 100 marks for Mathematics (25 questions in the 2026 cycle) within a 400-mark paper, so Mathematics is a smaller share of the total than in Paper 1. The 2027 syllabus is not yet released; check it for any topic cuts.
2
Do I need drawing classes to prepare for the Drawing Test?
While not mandatory, most successful B.Arch aspirants take dedicated drawing and sketching practice, either through coaching or self-study, for several months before the exam. The test evaluates proportion, perspective, shading, and composition — skills that improve significantly with regular practice on paper rather than through theory alone.
3
What is tested in the Aptitude section of Paper 2?
The Aptitude section tests visual perception and cognitive skills: imagining 3D objects from 2D drawings and vice versa, identifying rotated or mirrored shapes, distinguishing sets of forms, general knowledge of famous buildings and materials, and awareness of architects and their works. It is common to both Paper 2A and 2B.
4
What is unique to the Paper 2B (B.Planning) syllabus?
In the 2026 cycle Paper 2B replaced the Drawing Test with 25 Planning-based objective questions worth 100 marks. These cover concepts in urban planning, regional development, infrastructure, sustainability and general awareness of contemporary development issues. Confirm the Planning section's size and topics in the JEE Main 2027 bulletin.
5
Can I prepare for both Paper 2A and Paper 2B together?
Yes, since Mathematics and Aptitude are common to both papers, most of the preparation overlaps. Students only need additional, separate preparation for the Drawing Test (2A) or the Planning-based questions (2B), which are relatively less time-consuming to prepare for compared to the shared sections.
6
Is there a fixed weightage for each topic in Paper 2 Mathematics?
NTA does not publish an official topic-wise weightage for Paper 2 Mathematics. Based on past papers, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, and Calculus tend to be more heavily represented, but questions can be asked from any topic in the syllabus, so comprehensive preparation is recommended rather than selective topic skipping.
7
How is the Drawing Test different from the Planning questions?
The Drawing Test is a subjective, pen-and-paper section evaluated by examiners on artistic and spatial representation skills — you physically sketch objects, scenes, or compositions. Planning questions in Paper 2B are objective MCQs on a computer, testing knowledge and reasoning about urban and regional planning rather than any drawing ability.
