JEE Main 2027 Exam Pattern — What to Expect

Based on the stable JEE Main structure used since 2023. Official 2027 bulletin not yet released.

Important: JEE Main 2027 has not happened yet, and as of October 2026, NTA has not published an official information bulletin for it. Nothing on this page should be read as a confirmed 2027 date, number or rule — it describes the pattern that has stayed consistent across recent years so you can start preparing sensibly. Always cross-check the final details on jeemain.nta.nic.in once released.

The Pattern That Has Held Steady Since 2023

JEE Main's exam pattern has been largely stable across 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 — a three-subject Paper 1 for B.Tech/B.E. aspirants, and separate Paper 2A/2B papers for B.Arch and B.Planning aspirants. Because this structure has repeated unchanged for several consecutive cycles, it is a reasonable working basis for early 2027 preparation, even though NTA has not yet issued a 2027 bulletin to confirm it.

Paper 1 consists of 75 questions worth 300 marks across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (25 questions and 100 marks each), completed in 3 hours in Computer Based Test mode. Each subject splits into 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Value Questions. MCQs carry +4 for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect one; numericals carry +4 for correct and 0 for incorrect, with no negative marking.

Paper 2A (B.Arch) tests Mathematics, a general Aptitude section, and a pen-and-paper Drawing Test. Paper 2B (B.Planning) replaces the drawing component with planning-specific aptitude questions and is conducted entirely in CBT mode.

Chemistry20 (attempt all)525100
Mathematics20 (attempt all)525100

* MCQs carry four options with a single correct answer and +4/-1 marking. Numerical Value Questions require typing a numeric answer (often to two decimal places) and carry +4 for a correct entry with 0 marks (no negative marking) for an incorrect one, based on the pattern used consistently in recent cycles. Confirm the exact question-choice rules in the official 2027 bulletin, as NTA has occasionally adjusted how many NVQs are compulsory versus optional.

How to Prepare While Waiting for the Official Bulletin

  • Build your preparation around the stable Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics structure — this has not changed in several cycles.
  • Practice with recent years' papers under the current marking scheme so the exam-day rhythm feels familiar regardless of minor pattern tweaks.
  • Set a reminder to re-check this page or the official site once the JEE Main 2027 bulletin is released, typically a few months before registration.

Frequently Asked Questions – JEE Main 2027 Exam Pattern

1
Has NTA officially released the JEE Main 2027 exam pattern?
No. As of now, NTA has not released the official information bulletin for JEE Main 2027. This page describes the exam pattern you should expect based on the structure used consistently for JEE Main 2024, 2025 and 2026 — it is not a confirmed announcement for 2027.
2
What pattern should I prepare for while NTA's 2027 bulletin is awaited?
Prepare for the pattern that has held stable for several years: Paper 1 with 75 questions (300 marks) across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, split into MCQs and Numerical Value Questions, with +4/-1 marking for MCQs and +4/0 for numericals. This has not changed materially since 2023, making it a reasonable basis for early preparation.
3
Could the JEE Main 2027 pattern change from 2026?
NTA can revise the pattern, question count or marking scheme in any year's official bulletin. Historically major changes are rare and are usually announced months before registration. Always confirm the final pattern from the official bulletin once released, rather than relying solely on past-year patterns.
4
Will JEE Main 2027 still have two sessions?
The two-session structure (an early session and a later session, with the better of the two NTA scores considered) has been in place since 2021 and is expected to continue. However, this is based on established practice, not an official 2027 confirmation — verify once NTA notifies exact details.
5
Where will the official JEE Main 2027 pattern be published?
The official information bulletin is published on jeemain.nta.nic.in when registration opens. That document is the only authoritative source for exam pattern, marking scheme and syllabus for JEE Main 2027.
6
How many Numerical Value Questions are compulsory in each subject?
Based on the pattern used in recent cycles, each subject (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) carries 5 Numerical Value Questions out of its 25 total questions, and in most recent years all 5 have been compulsory to attempt (unlike an earlier phase around 2021-2022 when candidates could choose 5 out of 10 NVQs). Confirm the exact choice structure in the 2027 official bulletin since NTA has varied this detail before.
7
Is there negative marking for Numerical Value Questions in JEE Main?
No. Based on the consistent pattern since 2023, Numerical Value Questions carry +4 marks for a correct answer and 0 marks for an incorrect one — there is no negative marking on NVQs, unlike MCQs which carry a -1 penalty for a wrong answer.
8
What is the difference between Paper 2A and Paper 2B exam pattern?
Paper 2A, for B.Arch aspirants, includes Mathematics (compulsory, CBT mode), a General Aptitude section (CBT mode), and a Drawing Test that is traditionally conducted in pen-and-paper mode to assess sketching ability. Paper 2B, for B.Planning aspirants, replaces the Drawing Test with a Planning-based objective section and is conducted entirely in Computer Based Test mode without any offline component.
9
Will the total marks for JEE Main 2027 Paper 1 remain 300?
Based on the stable pattern since 2023 (75 questions across three subjects, 100 marks each), 300 total marks is the reasonable expectation for 2027 planning. However, NTA retains full discretion to revise question count or marks distribution in any year's bulletin, so this should be treated as a strong expectation rather than a locked-in fact until officially confirmed.
