Detailed Eligibility Criteria

1. JEE Main Performance

Mandatory

Must be among the top 2,50,000 rank holders in JEE Main 2026 Paper 1. Category-wise seats are allocated as: General (~1,07,000 effective), OBC-NCL (~64,125), SC (~35,875), ST (~17,937), EWS (~26,250), PwD (5% horizontal reservation).

2. Age Requirement

Mandatory

General/OBC-NCL/EWS: Must be born on or after October 1, 2001. SC/ST/PwD: Must be born on or after October 1, 1999. No upper age limit for SC/ST/PwD beyond this.

3. Number of Attempts

Mandatory

Maximum 2 consecutive attempts in JEE Advanced. First attempt in 2025 and second in 2026, OR first attempt in 2026 with one remaining attempt for 2027. Candidates who appeared in 2024 and 2025 have exhausted both attempts.

4. Class 12 Qualification

Mandatory

Must have appeared for Class 12 (or equivalent) board examination for the FIRST TIME in 2025 or 2026. Candidates who first appeared in Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are ineligible. Class 12 improvement examinations don't count.

5. No Earlier IIT Admission

Mandatory

Must NOT have been previously admitted to any IIT (including IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, IIT BHU, ISM Dhanbad, and IIST Thiruvananthapuram). Even one day of admission disqualifies.

Common Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid

  • 1.2024 pass-outs assuming they can appear in JEE Advanced 2026 — they cannot (first Class 12 appearance must be 2025 or 2026)
  • 2.Candidates who sat in JEE Advanced in 2024 and 2025 thinking they still have an attempt — both attempts are exhausted
  • 3.Candidates who were admitted to IIST Thiruvananthapuram assuming it's not an IIT — they are also ineligible
  • 4.Confusing JEE Main's age limit with JEE Advanced's age limit — they are different criteria

Frequently Asked Questions – JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility

Common questions about who can apply for JEE Advanced 2026 and eligibility criteria

1
Can a 2024 pass-out appear in JEE Advanced 2026?
No. Candidates who passed Class 12 (or equivalent) for the first time in 2024 or earlier are NOT eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. Eligibility requires that the candidate must have appeared in Class 12 (or equivalent) for the first time in 2025 or 2026. This is one of the most important eligibility criteria that many candidates overlook.
2
How does the 2-attempt rule work for JEE Advanced?
Each candidate can appear in JEE Advanced for a maximum of 2 consecutive years. If you appeared in JEE Advanced 2025 and 2026, you have exhausted both attempts. If you appear for the first time in 2026, you will still have one more attempt remaining for 2027. Consecutive means the attempts must be in back-to-back years (e.g., 2025 and 2026, or 2026 and 2027).
3
What is the age limit for JEE Advanced 2026?
For General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates: born on or after October 1, 2001. For SC/ST/PwD candidates: born on or after October 1, 1999 (5-year relaxation). Candidates who don't meet this age criterion cannot appear in JEE Advanced 2026 regardless of their JEE Main rank.
4
If I was admitted to an IIT earlier and withdrew, can I appear in JEE Advanced 2026?
No. Candidates who have been admitted to an IIT (including IIT BHU, ISM Dhanbad, IIST Thiruvananthapuram) even for one day — even if they withdrew admission later — are NOT eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. This is a strict criterion. Candidates who accepted a seat at NITs, IIITs, or other non-IIT institutions are not affected by this restriction.
5
What is the minimum JEE Main rank required for JEE Advanced 2026?
Top 2,50,000 unique candidates from JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 (combining both sessions) are eligible for JEE Advanced, with category-wise distribution: approx. 96,187 General, 64,125 OBC-NCL, 35,875 SC, 17,937 ST, 26,250 EWS (exact numbers to be confirmed by NTA). The qualifying percentile varies by category — approximately 89–91% for General, 74–76% for OBC-NCL.
