JEE Advanced 2026 – Who Can Apply, Eligibility Criteria

JEE Advanced eligibility works as a set of independent conditions that a candidate must satisfy simultaneously — meeting the JEE Main rank requirement alone does not automatically make you eligible if you fall short on any of the other criteria, such as age, number of attempts, Class 12 passing year, or prior IIT admission history. This layered structure exists because JEE Advanced is designed specifically for first-time, recent Class 12 candidates attempting IIT admission within a defined attempt window, rather than being open to anyone who simply clears the merit threshold in JEE Main regardless of their broader academic timeline.

The rank-based criterion (qualifying within the top bracket of JEE Main, historically around the top 2.5 lakh candidates) is set and announced by NTA alongside JEE Main results and reflects that year's overall applicant pool and category-wise distribution — it is not a fixed number carried over from year to year. The age, attempt-limit, and academic-year criteria, by contrast, are fixed rules defined by the JEE Advanced organizing committee and tend to remain structurally stable across years, even though the specific cutoff dates shift forward by one year each cycle (for instance, the "born on or after" date moves ahead annually to preserve the same effective age window for each new batch of Class 12 candidates).
