Eligibility to appear is simple. Eligibility to be admitted depends on the course, institute and university rules, which can be stricter.

Basic eligibility to appear

  • Citizenship: Indian citizen, or OCI (subject to approval; OCI candidates are eligible only for unreserved seats in the All India quota).
  • Qualification: Passed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent before the exam year, or appearing in the exam year.
  • Age: At least 17 years as on 31 December of the exam year. For 2026 that meant being born on or before 31 December 2009.
  • Upper age limit: None for appearing. For Marine Engineering the upper limit is 25 years as on 31 December of the exam year.
  • Attempts: The bulletin sets no limit on the number of attempts.

Academic criteria for engineering and technology

Admission follows AICTE norms. Candidates should have passed 10+2 with Physics, Mathematics and one of Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Information Technology, Biology, Informatics Practices, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational subject, Agriculture, Engineering Graphics, Business Studies or Entrepreneurship, or passed the D.Voc stream in the same or allied sector.

At least 45 percent marks (40 percent for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B and PwD) in the three subjects taken together. Candidates must also have passed English in 10+2 with at least 30 percent, and cleared theory and practical or project papers in all subjects.

Institute-specific criteria

Some universities set tougher cut-offs than the general rule. For example, the 2026 bulletin lists University of Calcutta B.Tech at 60 percent (55 percent reserved) in PCM, and Jadavpur University at 60 percent for General and EWS, 54 percent for OBC-A and OBC-B and 45 percent for SC, ST and PwD, plus a minimum in Mathematics and a West Bengal Council or equivalent Class 12 science requirement. Private universities such as JIS, Techno India, Adamas, Sister Nivedita and Neotia have their own conditions. Check the relevant section of the bulletin before choosing colleges.

Domicile, reservation and special cases

  • West Bengal domicile means continuous residence in the state for at least 10 years as on 31 December of the year before the exam, or parents who are permanent residents of West Bengal.
  • Reservation for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, EWS, PwD and TFW is for Indian citizens domiciled in West Bengal. OBC candidates must be in the non-creamy layer and produce an updated certificate.
  • OBC-A and OBC-B reservation is stated to be subject to the outcome of a Supreme Court special leave petition against a Calcutta High Court order. Follow the latest counselling notice.
