How opening and closing ranks work
TGCHE publishes last-rank data after each counselling phase by branch, college, category and gender. The closing rank is the last rank allotted in that branch.
The data for each phase differs. Phase 1 closing ranks are lower than the final phase.
Using the data
- Compare your category rank with last-year closing ranks
- Keep a safe, target and reach mix in web options
- Check the seat matrix for new seats and branches
Reading last-rank tables
Last-rank tables list each college and branch with columns for category and gender, so match your own category (OC, BC groups, SC, ST, EWS) and gender before comparing, and use the Telangana local area (OU or SVU region) column where it applies. A table for Phase 1 shows the ranks at which seats first filled, and the final phase shows the leftover seats, so closing ranks are higher (worse) in the final phase for the same branch. Computer science and allied branches at well-known colleges close at far better ranks than civil or mechanical, which is why a rank that misses CSE at one college can still get CSE at another.
