What is JEE Main Session 2?

JEE Main Session 2 is the second sitting of JEE Main, held in April in recent years (2-8 April in 2026). Session 1 is in January. You can appear in one or both sessions, and NTA uses your best NTA Score (percentile) for rank calculation. For the 2027 cycle, registration has not opened; reported tentative Session 1 dates are 22-30 January 2027 and Session 2 is expected in April 2027, both unconfirmed by NTA.

Why Session 2 Matters More for Most Candidates

For candidates still in Class 12, Session 1 (January) often overlaps with board exam preparation. Many students do not perform at their peak in Session 1. Session 2 in April generally comes after board exams are mostly complete (or just ending), allowing better focus on JEE preparation. Drop-year candidates typically target Session 2 as their primary attempt.

The best strategy: treat Session 1 as a real practice exam (not as casual as a mock test, but without excessive pressure). Use Session 1 feedback — which topics were weaker, exam hall time management, question difficulty — to refine preparation for Session 2. See JEE Main 2027 Session 1 vs Session 2, the 2027 exam dates tracker, registration differences between sessions, and the JEE Main 2027 registration page. Droppers can check registration for droppers and repeaters and the eligibility criteria.

NTA Score Calculation Across Sessions

If you appear in Session 1 and Session 2, NTA calculates your NTA Score for each session independently (using percentile normalisation within that session). Then NTA selects your best NTA Score across all sessions and uses that for the final merit list. This is used for JEE Advanced eligibility and JoSAA counselling rank.

Frequently Asked Questions

More questions about JEE Main sessions

1
Should I appear in both Session 1 and Session 2 of JEE Main?
Yes, appearing in both sessions is generally recommended as NTA considers only your best NTA Score. Session 1 (January) gives you a first real attempt and familiarity with the exam. If you score well, great; if not, you have Session 2 (April) to improve. There is no penalty for appearing in both. For the 2027 cycle, reported tentative Session 1 dates are 22-30 January 2027, and Session 2 is expected in April 2027; NTA has not confirmed either and registration has not opened.
2
Does Session 2 have a different syllabus than Session 1?
No. Both Session 1 and Session 2 cover the same JEE Main syllabus (Class 11 + Class 12 PCM). The question paper is different but the topics are the same. Some students find Session 2 more competitive because strong Session 1 candidates return to improve their score, but there is no official NTA data on this.
3
If I score lower in Session 2 than Session 1, does it affect my rank?
No. NTA uses only your best NTA Score across all sessions. If you scored 97 percentile in Session 1 and 95 percentile in Session 2, your official NTA Score is 97 percentile. A lower Session 2 score never replaces a higher Session 1 score. You can only improve, not worsen, by appearing in multiple sessions.
4
What is the registration process for Session 2?
Session 1 and Session 2 are registered separately. In recent cycles, including 2026, NTA ran a separate registration window for Session 2 on jeemain.nta.nic.in; Session 1 registration did not automatically cover Session 2. For 2027, registration has not opened and the bulletin is not out, so confirm the process there. See our Session 1 registration vs Session 2 page for the latest.
5
Were the JEE Main 2026 Session 2 results used for JEE Advanced eligibility?
Yes. NTA took the best score across sessions to determine the JEE Advanced eligibility cutoff, announced with the Session 2 result on 20 April 2026. For JEE Main 2026, the General category cutoff was 93.4123549 percentile, and 2,50,182 candidates qualified for JEE Advanced. The 2027 cutoff will be known only after the 2027 sessions.
