JEE Main 2027: The Real "Girls vs Boys Cutoff" Mechanism Explained

There is no separate gender-based merit cutoff. Here is the actual mechanism — the female supernumerary quota.

Important: JEE Main 2027 has not happened yet. This page explains a stable, policy-based mechanism that has applied for several years and is expected to continue, not a confirmed 2027-specific number. Exact seat counts for 2027 will be set by JoSAA closer to counselling and are not available now.

The Short Answer: No Separate Merit Cutoff

A common search query asks whether JEE Main 2027 will have a lower cutoff for girls compared to boys. The honest answer, consistent with how JEE Main has worked for years, is: JEE Main scoring and ranking is entirely gender-neutral. Every candidate is ranked on the same merit scale based on exam performance alone. There is no exam-level discount or separate passing threshold for any gender, and nothing suggests this will change in 2027.

What does exist — and what fuels this search query — is the female supernumerary seat quota, introduced at IITs from 2018 and extended to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, aimed at raising female representation in engineering toward roughly 20% of total intake.

How the Female Supernumerary Quota Actually Works

Institutes add extra seats — on top of their normal, gender-neutral capacity — reserved only for female candidates. During JoSAA counselling, these appear as a separate female-only rank list for each institute-branch-category combination, alongside the regular common list.

Because only female candidates compete for these additional seats, and that specific applicant pool is smaller than the full common pool, the closing rank for the female-only list is often a higher number than the common-list closing rank for the same seat. This is a seat-allocation outcome of a smaller competition pool, not an officially lowered merit bar for women. Describing it as "girls get an easier cutoff" misrepresents the mechanism — the quota creates more seats; it does not relax the exam-level bar for anyone.

Male candidates are not disadvantaged: supernumerary seats are additional to, not carved out of, the regular seat matrix.

What to Expect for JEE Main/JoSAA 2027

  • The same gender-neutral exam scoring is expected to continue — no evidence of any planned change for 2027.
  • The female supernumerary quota mechanism has run every year since its introduction and is expected to continue into 2027 JoSAA counselling.
  • Exact seat numbers per institute-branch for 2027 will only be known once JoSAA publishes its seat matrix — do not rely on any number claimed online before that.

Frequently Asked Questions – Gender and JEE Main/JoSAA 2027 Cutoffs

1
Will JEE Main 2027 have a separate, lower cutoff for girls compared to boys?
No. JEE Main scoring and ranking has always been gender-neutral — every candidate competes on the same merit scale regardless of gender, and there is no indication this will change for 2027. There is no exam-level 'girls cutoff' that is officially lower than a 'boys cutoff'.
2
Then what creates the perception that girls get an easier cutoff?
It comes from the female supernumerary (extra) seat quota applied during JoSAA counselling at NITs, IITs, IIITs and GFTIs. These are additional seats — created on top of normal capacity — reserved only for female candidates, aimed at raising female enrollment toward roughly 20% of the class. Because only female candidates compete for this smaller, separate pool of extra seats, the closing rank on the female-only list can look higher (more relaxed) than the common list closing rank for the same seat. That is a seat-allocation outcome of a smaller competition pool, not a lowered merit bar.
3
Do male candidates lose seats because of this quota in 2027?
No. Female supernumerary seats are additional to the existing seat matrix, not carved out of it. Male and other candidates' seat availability in the common pool is unaffected by this scheme.
4
Is the female supernumerary quota expected to continue for JEE Main/JoSAA 2027?
The scheme has been in place at IITs since 2018 and has since extended to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs under JoSAA, continuing every year since. Barring a policy change not yet announced, the same mechanism is expected to continue in 2027 — exact per-institute seat numbers are set by JoSAA each year and are not yet available for 2027.
5
Can a female candidate choose between the common list and the female-only list?
Yes. During JoSAA allocation, female candidates are evaluated against both the common list and the female-only supernumerary list for each institute-branch-category combination, and are allotted whichever is more favorable based on their rank and filled preferences.
6
Where can I see real closing rank data instead of generalized claims?
JoSAA publishes institute-branch-category-gender-wise opening and closing ranks after every round, for past years. Use a college predictor tool with gender and category filters to see relevant data rather than relying on broad statements about 'girls cutoff'.
