JEE Advanced College Predictor for Female Candidates 2026

Understand the female supernumerary quota at IITs and predict your admission chances for 2026

How the Female Supernumerary Quota Works

Since 2018, IITs have added supernumerary (extra) seatsspecifically for female candidates so that women form roughly 20% of each programme's intake. These are additional seats created on top of the existing capacity — they do not take seats away from the general pool.

During JoSAA counselling, every institute-branch combination has both a common rank list closing rank and a separate female-only closing rank for the supernumerary seats. A female candidate is evaluated against both lists and allotted whichever gives her the best available outcome.

This system exists purely to increase gender diversity in engineering education — it is not a reduction in the merit bar. The female-only list itself is strictly ordered by JEE Advanced rank within each category (General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD).

Using the Predictor as a Female Candidate

Our JEE Advanced College Predictor tool lets you enter your JEE Advanced rank, category and home state to see IITs and branches within reach — including options available only through the female supernumerary seats. Since the female-only closing rank is usually a higher (more relaxed) number than the common list for the same seat, many candidates find additional options open up once this quota is factored in.

Frequently Asked Questions – Female Candidates in JEE Advanced

Common questions about the female supernumerary quota at IITs

1
What is the female supernumerary quota in IITs?
To improve gender diversity, IITs created additional (supernumerary) seats so that female candidates make up about 20% of the total admitted class each year, across every IIT and programme. These seats are over and above the regular seats, meaning male candidates' opportunities are not reduced.
2
Are female candidates ranked separately in JEE Advanced?
Yes. In addition to the common rank list (CRL), JoSAA publishes a 'Female Only' rank list for every category (General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD) at each IIT-branch combination. A female candidate can be admitted either through the common seats (competing with everyone) or through the female-only supernumerary seats, whichever gives a better outcome.
3
Does the female quota mean lower cutoffs for girls?
It means female candidates compete among a smaller pool for the supernumerary seats, so the closing rank in the female-only list for a given institute-branch is usually a higher number (i.e., more relaxed) than the common CRL closing rank for that same seat. This is a quota mechanism, not a reduction in merit requirement — the female-only list is still rank-ordered by JEE Advanced merit.
4
Can a female candidate get a seat through the common list too?
Absolutely. Female candidates can be allotted seats through the regular (gender-neutral) common seats if their rank qualifies, exactly like any other candidate. The supernumerary female-only seats are an additional avenue, not a restriction.
5
How do I predict my IIT chances as a female candidate?
Use our JEE Advanced College Predictor tool and enter your category, state and rank. The tool shows your chances against both the common rank list and the female-only list where applicable, so you can see the full set of realistic options.
6
Does this quota apply at NITs and IIITs too?
Yes, NITs and IIITs also have female supernumerary seats under JoSAA counselling, following a similar principle of extra seats to raise female representation without reducing seats available to others.
