How Marks Become a Rank — The Method

JEE Main does not rank candidates by raw marks directly. Instead, your raw marks are converted into a percentile score through normalization — comparing your performance against other candidates in your specific session and shift. This percentile is what ultimately determines your All India Rank, once combined with the full distribution of percentiles across all candidates for that year.

This two-step process (marks → percentile → rank) is why the "same marks" can correspond to different ranks across different years — the total number of candidates and the shape of the score distribution change annually. A marks-vs-rank table is therefore always a historical snapshot, useful for gauging trend direction but not a precise predictor for a future, unconducted exam like JEE Main 2027.
