JEE Main 2026 Physics Syllabus

Chapter-wise topics and weightage for JEE Main 2026 Physics — covering Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics, and Thermodynamics.

JEE Main 2026 Physics Syllabus Overview

The JEE Main 2026 Physics syllabus is based on the NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 Physics curriculum, with some additional topics specified by NTA. Physics accounts for 25 effective questions in Paper 1 (20 MCQ + 5 numerical), totalling 100 marks.

The syllabus is broadly divided into four areas: Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Optics & Modern Physics, and Thermodynamics. Each area carries roughly equal weightage, though Electrodynamics and Mechanics together account for nearly 50% of questions in most exam years.

Section A: Mechanics

Laws of Motion & Friction
Work, Energy & Power
Rotational Motion & Moment of Inertia
Gravitation & Satellites
Properties of Solids & Fluids
Oscillations (SHM)
Waves & Sound

Section B: Electrodynamics

Electrostatics (Coulomb's Law, Electric Field, Potential)
Current Electricity (Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Laws)
Magnetic Effects of Current
Electromagnetic Induction & AC Circuits
Electromagnetic Waves

Section C: Optics & Modern Physics

Ray Optics & Optical Instruments
Wave Optics (Interference, Diffraction)
Dual Nature of Radiation & Matter
Atoms & Nuclei
Semiconductor Devices & Communication

Section D: Thermodynamics & Modern Topics

Thermal Properties of Matter
Thermodynamics (Laws, Carnot Cycle)
Kinetic Theory of Gases
Experimental Skills & Measurements

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Main 2026 Physics syllabus

1
Which chapters carry the most weightage in JEE Main Physics?
Electrodynamics (Current Electricity, Magnetism, EMI) typically carries the highest combined weightage, followed by Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy, Rotational Motion). Modern Physics and Optics also consistently contribute 2–3 questions each.
2
Is Class 11 or Class 12 Physics more important for JEE Main?
Both are equally important. Class 11 covers Mechanics and Thermodynamics (major weightage topics), while Class 12 covers Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, EMI, and Modern Physics. Neglecting either class is risky.
3
Are practical/experiment-based questions asked in JEE Main Physics?
Yes. Section B of JEE Main Paper 1 includes 10 numerical questions (attempt any 5), and many are experiment-based or require application of Physics concepts to real-world scenarios. NCERT practical exercises are a good source for these.
4
How many questions are asked from Physics in JEE Main?
JEE Main Paper 1 has 90 questions in total — 30 each from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each subject has 20 MCQ questions (attempt all) and 10 numerical questions (attempt any 5). So effective Physics questions = 25 (20 MCQ + 5 numerical).
5
Is Semiconductor Electronics important for JEE Main 2026?
Yes. Semiconductor Electronics (p-n junction, diodes, transistors, logic gates) is a Class 12 topic that appears regularly in JEE Main. Typically 1–2 questions come from this chapter. It is relatively easy to score and should not be skipped.
