Chemistry in Everyday Life

Inorganic Chemistry – Topics & Weightage

Inorganic Chemistry is the most NCERT-dependent section. Memorizing key facts, reactions, and properties directly from NCERT Class 11 and 12 is highly effective.

Periodic Table & Periodic Trends
Chemical Bonding & Molecular Structure
s-Block Elements (Alkali & Alkaline Earth)
p-Block Elements (Groups 13–18)
d-Block & f-Block Elements
Coordination Compounds
Metallurgy
Qualitative Analysis (Salts)

Chemistry Strategy for JEE Main 2026

Chemistry is often the highest-scoring subject for JEE Main aspirants who prepare it systematically. Here is a proven approach:

  • Inorganic: Read NCERT line by line. Make a summary sheet for each chapter. Revise every 2 weeks.
  • Organic: Understand mechanisms first, then memorize named reactions. Practice converting structures to products.
  • Physical: Practice numerical daily. Focus on Mole Concept, Electrochemistry, and Equilibrium as high-yield topics.

How Chemistry Fits Into the JEE Main Exam Pattern

JEE Main Chemistry has 25 questions worth 100 marks — 20 MCQs (each with 4 options, +4 for correct, −1 for incorrect) and 5 Numerical Value Questions (NVQs, +4 for correct, no negative marking, out of which candidates typically attempt any 5). Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics each carry 100 marks, making the paper 300 marks in total.

Because Chemistry has the highest proportion of direct, factual, NCERT-based content among the three subjects, it is often the fastest section to attempt in the exam — strong students frequently clear Chemistry in 40–45 minutes out of the 180-minute paper, saving time for Physics and Mathematics numericals.

A consistent pattern across recent sessions is that Inorganic Chemistry questions are rarely calculation-based and can usually be answered in under 30 seconds each if the relevant NCERT fact is memorized, while Physical Chemistry numericals take longer due to multi-step calculations. Planning your in-exam time allocation around this asymmetry — spending less time per question on Inorganic and budgeting more per question for Physical numericals — is a widely recommended strategy among JEE mentors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Main 2026 Chemistry syllabus

1
Is NCERT enough for Chemistry in JEE Main 2026?
NCERT is the backbone of JEE Main Chemistry, especially for Inorganic Chemistry and some Organic reactions. For Physical Chemistry numerical problems, NCERT alone may not suffice — refer to NCERT Exemplar and standard practice books like VK Jaiswal (Inorganic) and MS Chauhan (Organic).
2
Which section of Chemistry is easiest to score in JEE Main?
Inorganic Chemistry from NCERT is generally the easiest to score if you memorize the factual content well. Topics like periodic table trends, coordination compounds, and p-block elements are highly predictable and directly NCERT-based.
3
How many questions come from Organic Chemistry in JEE Main?
Typically 7–9 questions out of 25 in Chemistry come from Organic Chemistry in JEE Main. Key topics include GOC (General Organic Chemistry), Hydrocarbons, Aldehydes & Ketones, Amines, and Polymers.
4
Is Physical Chemistry calculation-heavy in JEE Main?
Yes, Physical Chemistry in JEE Main involves numerical calculations, especially in Mole Concept, Chemical Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics, and Solutions. These require formula mastery and regular practice with previous year papers.
5
Are Class 11 or Class 12 Chemistry chapters more important?
Both are important. Class 11 covers Mole Concept, Chemical Bonding, s-block, and some Organic basics. Class 12 covers Electrochemistry, Coordination Compounds, Carbonyl compounds, and d-block. The exam has roughly equal weight from both classes.
6
What is the typical weightage split between Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry?
Based on recent JEE Main papers, the 25-question Chemistry section typically splits as roughly 8–10 questions from Physical Chemistry, 7–9 from Organic Chemistry, and 7–9 from Inorganic Chemistry. This split can shift by one or two questions between shifts, but the three sections remain roughly equal in weight across a full session.
7
Which Chemistry chapters give the highest marks-per-hour of study?
Inorganic chapters like Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, and p-Block elements are widely considered the highest-yield for time invested, since they are almost entirely NCERT-based factual recall rather than application-heavy. In Physical Chemistry, Mole Concept and Electrochemistry are high-yield because the same formula types repeat across years. In Organic, GOC and Named Reactions have a high repeat rate in previous-year papers.
8
How should I revise Inorganic Chemistry closer to the exam?
Make one-page summary sheets per chapter covering trends, exceptions, and reactions, and revise these sheets every 10–14 days rather than re-reading the full NCERT textbook each time. In the final month before the exam, spend 20–30 minutes daily purely on revising these summary sheets and solving previous 5 years' Inorganic questions shift-wise, since many Inorganic questions repeat with only numbers or elements changed.
9
What are the most common mistakes students make in JEE Main Chemistry?
Common mistakes include: skipping NCERT line-by-line reading in favour of only solving MCQs (missing footnote-level facts that get tested), not practicing numerical problems in Physical Chemistry under time pressure, memorizing Organic reactions without understanding the underlying mechanism (which fails on twisted questions), and neglecting Chemistry in Everyday Life and Environmental Chemistry chapters, which are short but carry guaranteed, easy marks most years.
