MHT CET 2026 Final CAP Round 3 — Your Last Centralized Chance
CAP Round 3 is the last round run by the Maharashtra State CET Cell before Institute-Level admissions take over. Here's who's eligible, how Home University quota plays out, and what to do next.
What Is MHT CET CAP Round 3 and Why It's the Final Round
The Maharashtra State CET Cell conducts MHT CET admissions through its Centralized Admission Process, commonly called CAP, which runs across three centralized rounds — CAP Round 1, CAP Round 2, and CAP Round 3. CAP Round 3 is the final centralized round: after it concludes, the CET Cell does not run any further centralized allotment, and control of any remaining vacant seats passes to individual colleges through Institute-Level (also called College-Level or CAP-only) admissions. This makes CAP Round 3 the last opportunity to secure a seat through the unified merit-based process covered on our MHT CET 2026 counselling guide.
Eligibility for CAP Round 3 is narrower than for Round 1. Only candidates who remain unallotted after Round 2, or who explicitly chose "Betterment" (Maharashtra's equivalent of JoSAA's Float, where you keep your current seat while trying to upgrade) instead of "Freeze" in Round 2, are carried forward into Round 3's merit and vacancy matching. Candidates who selected Freeze in an earlier round have exited the centralized pool entirely and cannot participate again in Round 3, since Freeze is treated as final seat confirmation under CAP rules.
Maharashtra's admission structure layers two distinct reservation systems on top of each other. First, there is the 85% state-level Maharashtra-domicile quota versus the 15% All-India quota, which determines whether you compete against Maharashtra candidates only or against candidates from across India. Second, within the 85% state quota, seats are further distributed by Home University region — Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and other university zones — so a candidate's home region can affect which colleges they get preferential access to. By CAP Round 3, seats in high-demand Home University regions like Mumbai and Pune are typically the first to be exhausted, meaning candidates may find more realistic vacancies in colleges outside their own home region.
On top of the domicile and Home University layers, Maharashtra also applies caste-based reservation categories — SEBC, OBC, VJ (Vimukta Jati), NT-B, NT-C, NT-D (the various Nomadic Tribes sub-categories), SC, and ST — each with its own reserved percentage and its own category-wise cutoff. CAP Round 3's vacancy list and merit list are both published category-wise, so it's entirely possible for the Open category at a college to show zero vacancy while an OBC or NT-C seat remains open in the very same branch. Recall also that 80% of MHT CET admission seats are filled via the MHT CET percentile score while the remaining roughly 20% go through a parallel merit list based on JEE Main scores — both lists feed into the same CAP rounds, including Round 3.
On the college-tier side, top autonomous government institutes — VJTI Mumbai, COEP Pune, and ICT Mumbai — see their flagship branches like Computer Engineering and Information Technology close out in CAP Round 1 or Round 2 itself, with Open-category cutoffs regularly above 99.9 percentile. By CAP Round 3, vacancies at these institutes are usually confined to specific reserved categories, the All-India 15% quota, or comparatively less-preferred branches. Meanwhile, well-regarded private colleges such as PICT Pune, DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering (DJSCE) Mumbai, and Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) Mumbai tend to still have meaningful seat availability across a wider range of branches even in this final round, making them realistic targets for candidates entering CAP Round 3.
Once CAP Round 3 allotment was complete and candidates confirmed via Freeze, remaining vacant seats moved into a Round 4 (Non-CAP/Vacancy) round starting September 3, 2026. Beyond this, any residual seats moved to Institute-Level admissions — a decentralized process where each college independently admitted remaining eligible candidates following the CET Cell's broad eligibility and reservation framework, concluding the 2026 admission cycle.
MHT CET 2026 CAP Key Dates
*CAP Rounds 1–3 (Aug 2, Aug 12, Aug 24, 2026) and the Round 4 Non-CAP/Vacancy round (from Sept 3, 2026) are confirmed. Institute-Level admission dates for any remaining seats are announced separately. Always verify on the official portal: cetcell.mahacet.org.
Are You Eligible for CAP Round 3?
Automatically eligible and carried forward into Round 3's merit and vacancy matching. No fresh registration is normally needed unless the CET Cell specifically asks for it.
Eligible — your current seat is retained as a safety net while you're considered for an upgrade in Round 3, similar to JoSAA's Float option.
Not eligible for Round 3 — Freeze confirms your seat and exits you from the centralized CAP process entirely.
Generally not eligible for Round 3 unless the CET Cell explicitly reopens fresh registration; your best route becomes Institute-Level admission later.
Seat Availability by College Tier in the Final Round
| College | Typical CSE Cutoff (Open) | Round 3 Availability |
|---|---|---|

| COEP Pune | 99.9+ percentile | Rare — limited branches/categories |
| ICT Mumbai | 99.0+ percentile | Occasional — check category-wise |
| PICT Pune | 98.5+ percentile | Possible across some branches |
| Sardar Patel (SPCE) Mumbai | 98.0+ percentile | Moderate availability |
| DJ Sanghvi (DJSCE) Mumbai | 97.5+ percentile | Moderate availability |

CAP Round 3 Strategy Tips
- Freeze if reasonably satisfied. Round 4 was only a Non-CAP/Vacancy round — Betterment after Round 3 (where allowed) risked losing your seat with no further centralized round to recover it.
- Widen your Home University options. Seats in your own region may be exhausted by Round 3 — colleges in other university zones often have more openings.
- Check both merit lists. If you're in the ~20% JEE Main-based pool, verify your Round 3 status separately from the 80% MHT CET percentile pool.
- Plan for Institute-Level admission as backup. Shortlist private colleges you'd approach directly if CAP Round 3 doesn't work out.
