JoSAA 2026 Vacant Seats After Round 5 – What Happens Next?

JoSAA 2026 Round 5 results were released July 16, 2026. Here's where leftover seats go from here.

Why Seats Remain Vacant Even After 5 Rounds

Despite JoSAA running a full 5 rounds of allotment, upgradation, and floating, a certain number of seats across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs always remain unfilled when the process ends. This is a structural, year-over-year pattern, not a 2026-specific anomaly. The main causes:

  • Seat churn: a floating candidate moves up, vacating their lower seat, and no one else qualifies to take it before the process ends.
  • Withdrawals: candidates who get a seat elsewhere (e.g., a private college or state counselling) withdraw from JoSAA.
  • No-shows: allotted candidates who never complete document verification or fee payment.
  • Low-demand combinations: certain branch-institute pairs simply don't attract enough qualified applicants at any rank.

Where These Seats Go: CSAB Special Round

After JoSAA formally closes, all genuinely vacant seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (IITs are excluded — they don't participate in CSAB) are pooled and offered through CSAB Special Round. This is open to candidates with a valid JEE Main rank, whether or not they participated in JoSAA, giving fresh hope to many who missed out in the main rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions – Vacant Seats After JoSAA Round 5

Common questions about leftover NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats after JoSAA ends

1
Why are seats still vacant after JoSAA Round 5?
Seats remain vacant after Round 5 for several consistent reasons: candidates who got allotted a seat but chose to float/slide toward a better option and never materialized at that seat, candidates who withdrew from JoSAA mid-process, no-shows who didn't complete reporting/document verification, and inherently low-demand branch-institute combinations (often Civil, Metallurgy, or Textile at certain GFTIs) that simply don't fill up even with all 5 rounds exhausted.
2
Can I still apply for these vacant seats through JoSAA?
No. Once JoSAA Round 5 results are finalized (July 16, 2026 for the 2026 cycle) and the reporting window closes, JoSAA's own process for the year ends. Vacant seats are transferred to CSAB, which conducts a Special Round specifically to fill these leftover NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats.
3
Which institutes typically have the most vacant seats after Round 5?
Historically, GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) and newer/lower-ranked NITs account for the largest share of vacant seats, especially in branches like Civil Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Textile Technology, and Production Engineering. Core IITs rarely have vacant seats after Round 5 since demand far exceeds supply at every IIT.
4
Do vacant seats include seats from candidates who got upgraded?
Yes. When a candidate floats and gets upgraded from Seat A to Seat B in a later round, Seat A becomes vacant (assuming no one else is in line for it at that rank). These 'churned' seats are a major contributor to the vacant seat pool that CSAB later allocates.
5
How do I find the exact list of vacant seats after Round 5?
JoSAA does not publish a standalone 'vacant seat list' after Round 5 for public download — CSAB instead opens registration and displays the live seat matrix for its Special Round directly during choice-filling. Check our CSAB colleges with vacancies page for category-wise guidance.
