JoSAA 2026: What Happens If You Don't Accept Your Allotted Seat?

The exact consequence of missing fee payment, document upload, or response deadlines in JoSAA

The Three Ways a Seat Gets Forfeited

Every JoSAA round comes with a response window (typically 2–3 days) during which an allotted candidate must act. Non-acceptance happens through one of these paths:

  • No fee payment: the seat acceptance fee was not paid within the window.
  • No document verification: required documents were not uploaded or verified.
  • No response choice: Freeze/Float/Slide was never selected, leaving the system without a clear instruction.

Any of these outcomes is treated as non-acceptance for that round. The seat is then released and becomes available to other candidates in the next round's allotment.

What Happens to You After Non-Acceptance

If you miss the deadline, you lose the specific seat that was allotted to you — there's no retroactive restoration of that exact seat. Depending on when in the process this happens and whether you had formally withdrawn, your continued eligibility for subsequent rounds can vary, so it's critical to check your candidate status directly on the JoSAA portal rather than assume.

If this happens in Round 5 (the final round) and you don't get picked up anywhere else, your path forward is CSAB Special Round, which accepts candidates with a valid rank whether or not they had a JoSAA seat earlier.

How to Avoid This Mistake

Treat every round's response window as a hard deadline, not a soft suggestion. Complete fee payment and document upload at least a day in advance. If you're unsure whether to lock in your seat, remember that selecting Float never risks your current seat — see our Float vs Upgradation explainer for the full mechanics.

Frequently Asked Questions – Seat Not Accepted in JoSAA

Common questions about missed deadlines and forfeited seats in JoSAA

1
What exactly counts as 'not accepting' a JoSAA seat?
Not accepting means one or more of: not paying the seat acceptance fee within the response window, not uploading/verifying required documents, or simply not logging in to respond (Freeze/Float/Slide/Withdraw) during the given round. Any of these is treated as non-acceptance for that round.
2
Do I lose my seat permanently if I miss one round's deadline?
Generally yes for that specific allotted seat — if you do not pay the acceptance fee and complete the required response within the stipulated window for a round, JoSAA treats the seat as forfeited and it is released back into the pool for subsequent rounds. You do not automatically get a second chance at the exact same seat.
3
Can I re-enter JoSAA after missing a round's deadline?
If you still have rounds remaining and had not formally withdrawn, you may remain in the system for future rounds based on your original choice list, but you lose whatever seat you had already been allotted. Rules on this have been consistent year over year, but always confirm your specific status on the JoSAA portal rather than assuming.
4
Is the seat acceptance fee refundable if I don't accept?
If you never pay the fee, there is nothing to refund. If you had paid the fee in an earlier round and then fail to respond in a later round after being upgraded, refund policies depend on JoSAA's official rules for that year — check the official refund schedule on josaa.nic.in rather than assuming full/partial refund.
5
What's the safest way to avoid accidentally forfeiting a seat?
Mark your response window dates on a calendar, complete fee payment and document upload well before the deadline (not on the last day), and actively choose a response (Freeze/Float/Slide) rather than leaving your status unaddressed. If you're unsure whether to keep a seat, Float is nearly always safer than doing nothing, since Float guarantees you keep your current seat.
