JoSAA 2026 Spot Round Guide – What Actually Happens After Round 5

There's no official "JoSAA spot round" — here's the real process that follows JoSAA 2026 Round 5

Is There Really a JoSAA "Spot Round"?

Many students search for a "JoSAA spot round" expecting an extra, informal round after the official schedule ends. In reality, JoSAA does not conduct any round called a spot round. JoSAA 2026 ran exactly 5 structured rounds, with the final Round 5 seat allotment result released on July 16, 2026. After that, JoSAA's own counselling cycle for the year is complete — there is no Round 6 or informal extension.

What students are actually thinking of is CSAB Special Round, a distinct counselling process run by the Central Seat Allocation Board for seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs that remain vacant after JoSAA. This is the closest equivalent to a "spot round" in the centralized counselling system, and it follows a similar year-over-year pattern every cycle.

What Happens After JoSAA Round 5 Ends

Once JoSAA Round 5 results are out, the process generally follows this sequence year after year:

  • Candidates allotted seats in Round 5 either accept and complete admission formalities, or let the seat lapse.
  • JoSAA closes its portal for the year — no further JoSAA-branded rounds happen.
  • CSAB opens registration for its Special Round, typically within a couple of weeks of JoSAA's conclusion.
  • CSAB Special Round runs its own 1–2 sub-rounds, filling genuinely vacant NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats.
  • Any seats still vacant after CSAB may be filled through institute-level spot admissions.

Should You Wait for a "Spot Round" or Act on CSAB?

Do not wait around hoping JoSAA reopens — it won't. If you didn't secure a satisfactory seat by Round 5, your next real opportunity is CSAB Special Round registration, which has firm deadlines. Missing the CSAB window because you were waiting for a mythical "JoSAA spot round" can cost you a seat entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions – JoSAA Spot Round

Common questions about JoSAA's process after Round 5

1
Does JoSAA actually conduct a 'spot round'?
No. JoSAA does not use the term 'spot round' in its official process. JoSAA 2026 ran 5 regular rounds, with Round 5 results released on July 16, 2026, and that marked the end of JoSAA's own counselling cycle. What many students call a 'spot round' is actually CSAB Special Round, a separate counselling process conducted by CSAB for leftover NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats after JoSAA concludes.
2
What is the difference between JoSAA rounds and CSAB Special Round?
JoSAA (Rounds 1–5) is the primary counselling process for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, where you can float, slide, or upgrade your allotment each round. CSAB Special Round happens after JoSAA ends and is open only to candidates who did not get a seat in JoSAA or want to try for a better NIT/IIIT/GFTI seat (not IITs). It runs on vacant seats using a fresh choice-filling process.
3
Can I still get an NIT/IIIT seat after JoSAA 2026 Round 5 is over?
Yes, through CSAB Special Round. If you were allotted a seat in JoSAA and want another one, or did not get any seat, CSAB Special Round lets you compete for genuinely vacant seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs using the same CRL rank.
4
Is CSAB Special Round the same as institute-level spot admission?
No. Some individual institutes (mainly GFTIs and state-quota seats) may separately announce their own spot admission rounds for seats that remain vacant even after CSAB. These are institute-specific, require physical reporting, and are not part of the centralized JoSAA/CSAB system.
5
What happens to seats that remain vacant even after CSAB Special Round?
Any seats still vacant after CSAB Special Round revert to the respective institute, which may fill them through its own institute-level spot round, usually with very short notice and in-person reporting. This mostly affects lower-demand branches at GFTIs.
