JoSAA Upgradation vs Float Explained (2026 Guide)
The exact difference between automatic upgradation and the Float response — with a worked example from JoSAA 2026
Upgradation: The Automatic Engine Behind Every Round
Upgradation is not something you choose — it happens automatically in every JoSAA round based purely on your ranked choice list and your CRL/category rank. In each round (JoSAA 2026 ran 5 rounds, concluding July 16, 2026), the system compares every seat you're eligible for against your current allotment. If a seat higher on your preference list opens up because someone above you vacated it, you are automatically upgraded to it.
This happens regardless of whether you chose Freeze, Float, or Slide in the previous round for most upgrade scenarios — upgradation is the engine; Float/Freeze/Slide are what determine whether you stay in the running for further upgrades or lock in.
Float: Staying Open Without Risking Your Seat
Float is a response you actively select after an allotment. Choosing Float means: "Keep my current seat as a guaranteed fallback, but keep trying to allot me anything higher on my choice list — including a different institute type (IIT, NIT, IIIT, GFTI)."
Worked example (JoSAA 2026): Suppose in Round 2 you were allotted NIT Surathkal CSE, and your preference list ranks IIT Dhanbad Mechanical higher (because it's an IIT, even in a less popular branch). If you select Float, JoSAA keeps checking in Rounds 3, 4, and 5 whether that higher-ranked IIT seat becomes available for your rank. If it does, you get upgraded to it. If it never does, you simply keep your NIT Surathkal CSE seat through to the end.
This is different from Freeze, where you lock your current seat and exit the allotment process entirely — no further changes, no further risk, but also no further upside.
Which Should You Choose?
If you are genuinely happy with your current seat and don't want to risk any complications (including fee/document issues from reallotment), choose Freeze. If you have a strictly better option higher on your list and are comfortable waiting, choose Float — it costs you nothing since your current seat is protected. Slide is useful when you only want to move within the same institute to a better branch without institute-hopping risk.
