CSAB 2026 – Which Colleges Have Maximum Vacancies?

Why Vacancies Occur · Historically Vacancy-Heavy NITs & IIITs · Branches With Most Vacancies · Strategy for Higher-Rank Students

Why Do Some Colleges Have More CSAB Vacancies?

CSAB vacancies arise when JoSAA's 5 rounds end without all seats being filled at certain institutes. Understanding why this happens helps you plan your CSAB strategy effectively.

The primary factor is perceived desirability — a combination of location, institute age and reputation, and branch popularity. Institutes that score low on these factors consistently have vacancies in every JoSAA and CSAB cycle:

  • Remote location: NITs in the North-East of India (Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur) are far from major employment hubs. Many students from other states are reluctant to relocate there for 4 years, even for a government college seat.
  • Newer institutes: NITs established after 2010 have shorter placement histories and less established alumni networks. Students prefer older, more proven NITs even when the newer NIT may offer more seats.
  • Non-CS/ECE branches: At any NIT, branches like Civil Engineering, Mechanical, Chemical, and Metallurgical have lower demand than CSE/ECE/EE. These branches frequently see vacancies at mid-tier NITs.
  • Seat acceptance behavior: Some candidates accept seats speculatively (to have a fallback) then do not report, leaving the seat vacant at reporting time — these show up as CSAB vacancies.

Historically Vacancy-Heavy NITs and IIITs

Based on historical CSAB data (2022–2025), the following institutes consistently have vacancies across multiple rounds:

NITs With High CSAB Vacancies

NITLocationVacancy Pattern
NIT Arunachal PradeshYupia, Arunachal PradeshAll branches — high vacancies consistently
NIT NagalandChumukedima, NagalandAll branches — high vacancies
NIT MizoramAizawl, MizoramAll branches — significant vacancies
NIT ManipurImphal, ManipurAll branches — moderate-high vacancies
NIT MeghalayaShillong, MeghalayaNon-CS branches — moderate vacancies
NIT SikkimRavangla, SikkimAll branches — moderate vacancies
NIT PuducherryKaraikal, PuducherryNon-CS branches — moderate vacancies
NIT GoaPonda, GoaCivil, Mechanical — some vacancies

IIITs With CSAB Vacancies

Some IIITs — particularly newer ones established under PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model — also have vacancies in non-CS branches:

  • IIIT Kottayam — Electronics & Communications
  • IIIT Ranchi — non-CS branches
  • IIIT Nagpur — non-CS branches at certain quotas
  • IIIT Lucknow — some branches in specific rounds

*Vacancy patterns change year to year. Always verify with official CSAB vacancy data on csab.nic.in.

How to Check Official CSAB Vacancy Data

The most accurate way to identify CSAB 2026 vacancies is through official sources. Here is the step-by-step approach:

  1. JoSAA Round 5 Final Allotment Results: JoSAA Round 5 published results on July 16, 2026 — the final allotment data is archived on josaa.nic.in. Seats that were not allotted in Round 5 formed the CSAB SR1 pool.
  2. CSAB Official Vacancy Notice: Ahead of SR1, CSAB published a detailed list of available seats (the "seat matrix") on csab.nic.in. This remains the definitive source, now archived for 2026.
  3. Historical Data (CSAB 2025): Download the CSAB 2025 allotment data from csab.nic.in → Archives. Sort by institute to see which institutes had seats remaining after SR2.
  4. JoSAA Opening/Closing Rank Archives: Branches where closing rank in JoSAA final round equals "N/A" or is very high typically indicate vacancies going into CSAB.

Strategy for Students With Higher Ranks

If you have a strong rank (say, JEE Main CRL 8,000–20,000) and did not get your preferred seat in JoSAA, CSAB still offers value — but the strategy is different:

Look for CSE/ECE at mid-tier NITs with vacancies

Even popular NITs sometimes have vacancies in ECE or Electrical under specific quotas (OBC, EWS) in CSAB rounds. These are worth targeting if your category rank is competitive.

Consider NE state NITs for branch upgrade

If you have a seat at NIT Trichy Mechanical (JoSAA) but want CSE, you might get NIT Manipur CSE through CSAB. While it's a location trade-off, some students prioritise branch over location.

Check newer IIITs for CS/IT branches

Newer IIITs sometimes have CS/IT vacancies that didn't fill in JoSAA SR6. These are good options for software careers even if the IIIT is less established.

Add CSAB as a safety net, not primary plan

If your JoSAA allotment is reasonable, use CSAB as a potential upgrade, not your first choice. Lock your JoSAA seat acceptance before the deadline if you already have a decent allotment.

FAQs – CSAB 2026 Vacancies

Common questions about CSAB 2026 college vacancies and how to find and use them

1
Why do some NITs have many CSAB vacancies while others have none?
Vacancies correlate with a college's perceived desirability. NITs in remote NE states (Arunachal, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland), or newer NITs with less brand recognition, tend to have more vacancies — especially in non-CSE branches. Popular NITs like Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal fill completely in JoSAA itself.
2
Are CSAB vacancy colleges 'bad' colleges?
Not necessarily. NIT Silchar, NIT Agartala, and NIT Meghalaya are accredited government colleges with decent placements and infrastructure. They have vacancies due to location factors, not academic quality. For students willing to relocate to NE India, these colleges offer a legitimate pathway to a centrally funded engineering education.
3
Which branches have the most vacancies in CSAB?
Non-CS branches at newer NITs typically have the most vacancies: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (at less popular NITs), Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Mining Engineering. CSE and ECE at popular NITs rarely have vacancies.
4
How do I find the official CSAB 2026 vacancy data?
Official CSAB 2026 vacancy data was published on csab.nic.in after each round and is now archived there. You can also check the CSAB 2025 seat matrix and allotment results from csab.nic.in/archives for historical context, or JoSAA 2026's Round 5 (final round, July 16) results, which show how many seats were filled before CSAB.
5
I have a high rank (under 5000). Should I still look at CSAB vacancy colleges?
With a rank under 5,000, you should primarily focus on JoSAA — you can get good NITs through JoSAA itself. CSAB becomes relevant if JoSAA ended without giving you a preferred outcome. Even with a good rank, CSAB offers a second chance to get a branch upgrade at an NIT that had a vacancy in a preferred branch.
