CSAB 2026 NEUT Round – Complete Guide for NE & UT Candidates

What is the CSAB NEUT Round?

The CSAB NEUT Round (North East and Union Territory Round) is a special counselling round conducted by the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) specifically for candidates who are domiciled in the eight North-Eastern states of India or in the Union Territories. This round runs after CSAB Special Round 2 and aims to ensure that students from geographically disadvantaged and remote regions of India have a fair opportunity to secure seats in centrally funded technical institutions.

The policy rationale is straightforward: many students from NE states and UTs face geographical, economic, and infrastructural disadvantages that historically resulted in underrepresentation at NITs and IIITs. The NEUT round allocates specific seats — and sometimes entire additional seat pools — exclusively for these candidates, with relaxed effective cutoffs compared to the general CSAB rounds.

In practical terms, the NEUT round means that if you are from Assam, Manipur, or Lakshadweep (for example) and you did not receive a satisfactory seat in JoSAA or CSAB SR1/SR2, you have a third dedicated opportunity specifically for you.

  • Must not have physically reported to a CSAB SR1 or SR2 allotted institute (check CSAB notification)
  • Must possess a valid domicile certificate from an eligible NE state or UT

How the CSAB NEUT Round Works

The NEUT round follows a similar process to the regular CSAB special rounds but has specific seats reserved for NE/UT candidates:

Seat Pool in NEUT

The CSAB NEUT round draws on seats that remained vacant after SR1 and SR2, as well as seats that were specifically created under the NE/UT quota at various NITs and IIITs. Some institutes — particularly NITs in NE states like NIT Silchar, NIT Agartala, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, and NIT Mizoram — have a significantly larger NEUT seat pool.

Importantly, the NEUT round may access seat pools not available in SR1 or SR2, meaning you could potentially get seats at institutes that appeared full in earlier rounds.

NEUT Registration and Choice Filling

If you are eligible, you register on csab.nic.in during the NEUT window and submit a fresh choice list (or update your existing CSAB choice list, depending on the year's process). The allotment algorithm then processes your choices against the available NEUT seat pool, prioritising NE/UT candidates.

FAQs – CSAB 2026 NEUT Round

Common questions about the CSAB 2026 NEUT round for North-Eastern and Union Territory candidates

1
What is the CSAB 2026 NEUT Round?
CSAB NEUT is a special round of CSAB counselling reserved for candidates who are domiciled in North-Eastern (NE) states (Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim) and Union Territories (Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep, Puducherry). It offers additional seats specifically for these candidates.
2
Is the NEUT round only for NE states or also for Union Territories?
The NEUT round covers both North-Eastern states AND Union Territories. 'NEUT' itself stands for North East and Union Territory. Candidates from any of the 8 NE states or any UT listed in the official CSAB notification are eligible.
3
Can candidates outside NE states participate in CSAB NEUT?
No. The NEUT round is exclusively for candidates with domicile proof from the eligible NE states and UTs. Candidates from other states can participate in CSAB Special Round 1 (SR1) and Special Round 2 (SR2) but not CSAB NEUT.
4
What documents prove NE/UT domicile for CSAB NEUT?
Typically required: a domicile certificate issued by the state government or a relevant competent authority of the NE state or UT, along with your Class 10 certificate showing place of birth or permanent address in the eligible state/UT. Exact document requirements will be in the CSAB 2026 official notification.
5
Do I need to register separately for the CSAB NEUT round?
The NEUT round is part of the CSAB 2026 process. You register on csab.nic.in and indicate your NE/UT domicile status. Depending on the year's process, eligible candidates may be automatically considered for NEUT seats or may need to separately opt into the NEUT round. Check the official CSAB 2026 notification for the exact procedure.

NE/UT Advantage

NEUT seats typically have higher effective closing ranks (easier to get) than the same branches in SR1/SR2. If you are eligible, always participate — it is a significant advantage.
