CSAB 2026 Seat Matrix – Available Seats in NITs, IIITs & GFTIs

Understand how CSAB seats are formed, which institutes participate, and what to expect in 2026

How CSAB 2026 Seat Matrix is Formed

The CSAB 2026 seat matrix is not a fixed pre-determined set of seats. It is formed dynamically after JoSAA 2026 Round 5 concludes (July 16, 2026), based on two sources:

  1. Vacated seats from JoSAA 2026: In every JoSAA round, some candidates who receive allotment do not report to their institutes. These seats become "vacated" and are transferred to CSAB. The number of vacated seats varies by institute and branch, but typically runs into the thousands across all NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
  2. Supernumerary NEUT seats: CSAB creates additional seats (over and above the sanctioned intake) specifically for candidates from North Eastern states and Union Territories. These are typically 2–5 seats per institute and are only available to NEUT-eligible candidates.

Once the seat matrix is finalized, it is published on the CSAB portal at the start of registration. Candidates can view available seats by institute, branch, and category before filling their choice list.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB 2026 Seat Matrix

Common questions about how CSAB seats are formed and which institutes participate

1
How is the CSAB 2026 seat matrix formed?
The CSAB 2026 seat matrix is formed using two types of seats: (1) Vacated seats from JoSAA 2026 — these are seats that were allotted in JoSAA rounds but the candidate did not report or withdrew their allotment. (2) Supernumerary NEUT seats — additional seats created specifically for candidates from North Eastern states and Union Territories, beyond the normal sanctioned intake.
2
How many total seats are typically available in CSAB Special Round?
The total number of seats in CSAB Special Round varies year to year. Historically, approximately 3,000–5,000 seats have been available across all NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs combined in the Special Round. This number depends on how many JoSAA allottees did not report to their institutes.
3
Which institutes participate in CSAB 2026?
All 31 NITs, 26 IIITs (under NIT Council), and approximately 30 GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) participate in CSAB. IITs and ISM Dhanbad do NOT participate — they are only part of JoSAA.
4
Does the CSAB seat matrix include seats for all branches?
Yes, CSAB's seat matrix includes vacated seats from all branches — CSE, ECE, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Biotechnology, etc. However, the availability is unpredictable. Popular branches like CSE at top NITs may have very few or no seats, while less competitive branches usually have more availability.
5
When is the CSAB 2026 seat matrix published?
The CSAB 2026 seat matrix will be published on csab.nic.in at the time of registration, typically a day or two before choice filling opens. Candidates can view the available institute-branch combinations with their seat counts before making their choice list.
