CSAB 2026 Cutoff – Opening & Closing Ranks for NIT/IIIT

Branch-wise opening and closing rank data for NITs, IIITs & GFTIs in CSAB Special Round 2026

Understanding CSAB 2026 Cutoffs

CSAB 2026 cutoffs refer to the opening and closing CRL (Common Rank List) ranks at which seats were allotted in the CSAB Special Round. These cutoffs are distinct from JoSAA cutoffs because CSAB operates on the residual seats — those left after all 6 JoSAA rounds.

Why are CSAB cutoffs typically worse than JoSAA? In JoSAA Rounds 1–6, the best-ranked candidates pick up the most desirable seats. By the time CSAB Special Round begins, nearly all seats at top NITs for top branches (CSE, ECE at NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, etc.) are already taken. Therefore, CSAB tends to cater to candidates in the rank range of 20,000 to 1,50,000 CRL.

That said, CSAB remains a genuine opportunity. Every year, thousands of students get admissions to NITs and IIITs through CSAB Special Round in branches like Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, ECE, and even CSE at Tier-2 and Tier-3 NITs.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB 2026 Cutoff

Common questions about CSAB 2026 opening and closing ranks

1
Are CSAB 2026 cutoffs higher or lower than JoSAA?
CSAB cutoffs are typically higher (worse CRL rank) than JoSAA final round cutoffs for the same institute-branch combination. This is because the top-ranked candidates have already secured their preferred seats in JoSAA, so seats available in CSAB Special Round are filled by candidates with relatively higher ranks. However, for candidates with ranks in the 50,000–150,000 range, CSAB offers genuine opportunities at good NITs and IIITs.
2
Which NITs have the lowest (best) CSAB cutoffs?
NITs with the best (lowest rank required) CSAB cutoffs are typically Tier-1 NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Calicut for popular branches. However, for CSE specifically, even Tier-2 NITs see cutoffs above 50,000 CRL in CSAB Special Round. For Tier-3 NITs and branches like Mechanical/Civil, seats may be available well above 100,000 CRL.
3
How do I use previous year CSAB cutoffs to predict my chances?
Previous year CSAB cutoffs (closing ranks) are a good guide. If your CRL rank is within 10–15% of last year's closing rank for a particular institute-branch, you have a reasonable chance. Use our college predictor tool at jeecounselling.in to get personalized predictions based on your rank and category.
4
Do CSAB cutoffs differ by category?
Yes, CSAB maintains separate cutoffs for every category — General (CRL), EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD. SC/ST candidates can typically access seats at ranks 3–5x higher than the General CRL cutoff. OBC-NCL cutoffs are approximately 1.5–2x higher than General CRL.
5
Are home state vs other state quotas applicable in CSAB?
Yes, NITs maintain home state quota (HS) and other state quota (OS) distinctions in CSAB as well. Home state candidates can often get seats at slightly higher CRL ranks under the HS quota. The home state quota is 50% of total NIT seats. Candidates from other states compete for the remaining 50% under OS quota, which generally has lower (better) cutoff ranks.
