CSAB 2026 OBC-NCL Cutoff – Special Round Ranks
27% central OBC-NCL reservation in CSAB Special Rounds — cutoff trends, certificate rules, and how it compares to General category.
What is CSAB and OBC-NCL Reservation?
CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) conducts Special Round counselling for leftover seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs after JoSAA concludes its main rounds. Any seat that stays vacant post-JoSAA — whether due to candidates not reporting, withdrawing, or simply no eligible candidate being available — flows into the CSAB pool and is re-offered through CSAB Special Round 1 (SR1) and Special Round 2 (SR2).
Just like JoSAA, CSAB honours the central government's 27% OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer) reservation. This is a vertical reservation, meaning 27% of every seat matrix — Home State and Other State, General-EWS-SC-ST-OBC combined — is set aside for OBC-NCL candidates. Within CSAB, OBC-NCL candidates only compete against other OBC-NCL candidates for these designated seats, keeping their effective competition pool much smaller than the overall applicant pool.
Why OBC-NCL Cutoffs Behave Differently in CSAB vs JoSAA
During JoSAA, OBC-NCL seats at popular NITs like Trichy, Warangal, and Surathkal fill up quickly with strong OBC-NCL rank holders. By the time CSAB begins, the OBC-NCL seats still open are concentrated in newer or less sought-after NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. This changes the cutoff dynamics: CSAB OBC-NCL cutoffs at flagship NITs are usually unchanged or only marginally relaxed from JoSAA's final round, but at newer NITs and GFTIs, CSAB OBC-NCL cutoffs can open up dramatically compared to JoSAA closing ranks, because there simply weren't enough OBC-NCL applicants willing to accept those seats earlier in the process.

OBC-NCL Certificate Requirements for CSAB 2026
To be considered for OBC-NCL seats in CSAB, your certificate must satisfy three conditions: it must be issued in the central government prescribed format (not the state OBC list unless the caste is also listed centrally), it must explicitly state "Non-Creamy Layer" status, and it must be current — typically issued within the same financial year as the counselling (on or after 1 April 2026 for 2026 admissions). Certificates that only mention "OBC" without the non-creamy layer clause, or that are more than a year old, are commonly rejected during document verification.
It is strongly advised to get a fresh NCL certificate renewed close to the counselling dates rather than relying on one obtained during Class 12 admissions, since many candidates lose their OBC-NCL seat allotment purely due to certificate technicalities rather than eligibility issues. Keep both an income-cum-caste certificate and, where applicable, a caste certificate ready as some states issue them separately.
Central OBC List vs State OBC List
A crucial and often-missed detail: your caste must appear in the Central List of OBCs for the state/UT you are applying from, not just your state's own OBC list. Many state-recognized OBC castes are not present in the central list, which means candidates who assume they qualify based on a state certificate can be disqualified from the OBC-NCL quota in CSAB. Always cross-check your caste against the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) central list before counselling.
Strategy for OBC-NCL Candidates in CSAB Special Rounds
If you hold a valid OBC-NCL certificate and did not get your preferred branch/institute in JoSAA, CSAB special rounds are genuinely worth pursuing rather than settling for a private college. Because OBC-NCL applicant volume drops sharply once JoSAA ends (many OBC-NCL candidates who got a JoSAA seat exit the process), the effective competition for CSAB OBC-NCL seats is often much thinner, giving you real upgrade potential — particularly at newer NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs that had lower OBC-NCL demand in JoSAA.
Fill a wide spread of choices across Home State and Other State quota, and across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, rather than restricting yourself to 4-5 preferred options. Since CSAB runs only two special rounds with tight timelines, having 40-60+ choices filled maximizes your chance of an upgrade before the counselling window closes.
