CSAB 2026 Choice Filling Tips – Strategy for Special Round (Concluded)

CSAB 2026 Special Round concluded in August 2026. Here's the choice-filling strategy that worked — useful reference for understanding how allotment played out and for future CSAB cycles.

CSAB 2026 Choice Filling Strategy

CSAB 2026 Special Rounds (SR1 and SR2) operated on the leftover vacant seats after JoSAA 2026 concluded on July 16. The choice filling process was similar to JoSAA but with fewer candidates competing, which meant relaxed closing ranks. Here is the strategy guide that applied — useful as a reference for how the round played out and for future CSAB cycles.

Step 1 – Know the Available Seats

Before filling choices, candidates checked the CSAB 2026 seat matrix released on csab.nic.in. The matrix showed exactly how many seats were vacant in each institute, branch, and category. The advice was to focus only on seats available in your category — not waste choices on zero-vacancy combinations.

Step 2 – Use Previous Year CSAB Cutoffs as Benchmarks

NIT WarangalCSE (GEN-OS)3,2003,600

Step 3 – Build Your Choice List (Order Matters)

  • Top of list: Dream college+branch combination (even if slightly reach).
  • Middle of list: Realistic colleges where rank comfortably fell within CSAB cutoff.
  • Bottom of list: Safe fallback options — colleges where the rank was well within cutoff.
  • Always include: Home-state quota (HS) options if applicable — home state quotas typically had significantly lower cutoffs.

Common Mistakes That Cost Candidates

  • Not filling enough choices — the benchmark was at least 50 unique combinations.
  • Filling the same college multiple times with different branches without strategising branch priority.
  • Ignoring home-state quota options — HS quota could drop cutoffs by 2,000–5,000 ranks.
  • Assuming CSAB cutoffs were the same as JoSAA — they were typically more relaxed.
  • Missing the lock-choices deadline — unsubmitted choices were treated as not participated.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB 2026 Choice Filling

Common queries about CSAB 2026 choice filling strategy

1
How many choices should I have filled in CSAB 2026?
Candidates were advised to fill as many choices as possible — ideally 50 or more — since the CSAB portal allowed adding hundreds of choices. Adding more choices never hurts allotment chances; a candidate is always allotted the highest-ranked choice their rank qualifies for. This remains the right approach for future CSAB cycles too.
2
Did CSAB cutoffs actually drop compared to JoSAA in 2026?
Yes, as expected. CSAB 2026 Special Round (SR1 and SR2, concluded August 2026) operated on leftover vacant seats after all 5 JoSAA 2026 rounds concluded on July 16. Since top-rank candidates had already taken their seats, competition reduced. As in previous years, closing ranks in CSAB were typically 5–15% higher (relaxed) compared to JoSAA Round 5 (Final) closing ranks for the same branch and category.
3
Was it better to put dream colleges first or safe colleges first in CSAB?
Candidates were advised to always put their most preferred choice at the top. CSAB used the same choice-locking mechanism as JoSAA — allotment went to the highest-ranked option a candidate's rank satisfied. Putting safe choices first could result in a less-preferred allotment even if the candidate qualified for a better one listed below.
4
Could choices be changed after locking in CSAB 2026?
Once a candidate clicked 'Lock Choices', the selection was final for that special round. CSAB 2026 ran two special rounds (SR1, result August 6, and SR2, result August 12), and candidates could revise choices before SR2 locking.
5
Was it a good strategy to include both NIT and IIIT choices in CSAB 2026?
Yes. Mixing NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs in the choice list was a sound strategy. IIITs often had lower closing ranks than equivalent NITs and turned out to be hidden gems — especially IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Bangalore, and IIIT Delhi which have very strong placements.
