JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling

Choice filling is the most important controllable step in JoSAA counselling. Add programmes in your true preference order, starting with dream choices and moving through realistic and safer options. Do not place a lower-preference branch above a higher-preference branch only because it looks safer.

Use mock allotment results to refine the list, but avoid deleting good options too early. A broad list across IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs improves your chances of receiving an acceptable seat while still allowing upgrades through Float or Slide in later rounds.

A commonly used approach is the 20-40-40 split: roughly 20% "reach" choices (institute-branch combinations slightly above your expected rank based on previous year closing ranks), 40% "match" choices (combinations where your rank historically falls comfortably within the closing range), and 40% "safe" choices (combinations with closing ranks well above your expected rank, guaranteeing a reasonable fallback). This spread balances ambition with the practical need for a guaranteed seat.

Before finalizing, cross-check each choice against at least two to three years of opening/closing rank data rather than a single year, since closing ranks can swing meaningfully year to year due to changes in total applicants, seat matrix revisions, or new branches being introduced. A branch that closed at rank 12,000 one year might close at 9,000 or 15,000 the next, so building in a buffer around your target rank is safer than assuming exact repeatability.

Finally, remember that JoSAA choice filling is locked after the final deadline before Round 1 — once locked, you cannot add new choices, only reorder, trim, or modify your Freeze/Float/Slide status after each round. Lock in a list you are fully comfortable defending before the deadline.
