JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling Strategy

Choice filling is the most important controllable step in JoSAA counselling. Add programmes in your true preference order, starting with dream choices and moving through realistic and safer options. Do not place a lower-preference branch above a higher-preference branch only because it looks safer.

Use mock allotment results to refine the list, but avoid deleting good options too early. A broad list across IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs improves your chances of receiving an acceptable seat while still allowing upgrades through Float or Slide in later rounds.

How many choices can I fill in JoSAA 2026?
JoSAA 2026 allows up to 25,000 program choices. You can fill choices from all 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 54 GFTIs. Fill as many genuine options as possible — more choices means more allotment opportunities.

What is the best strategy for JoSAA 2026 choice filling?
Put your most preferred institute-branch combination first. Include a mix of reach (20%), moderate (40%), and safe (40%) options. Do not put choices you would reject — the system allots the highest preference you are eligible for.

Should I keep the same choices in all rounds of JoSAA 2026?
You can modify choices after each round during the modification window. After round 1 allotment, if you want to upgrade, ensure your preferred choices are above the current allotted seat in the choice list.

What is Float and Freeze in JoSAA 2026?
Float means you accept the current seat but remain in consideration for better seats in subsequent rounds. Freeze means you accept the current seat and opt out of further upgrades. Slide means you accept if a better branch opens in the same institute.

Can I change my choices after JoSAA allotment?
You can modify choices before each round closes. After accepting a seat (Pay seat acceptance fee), you can still float for better options in remaining rounds but cannot remove choices below the accepted seat.
