JoSAA 2026 Seat Allotment

After every JoSAA seat allotment round, candidates must check the allotted institute, branch, category and quota carefully. If a seat is allotted, the next steps are seat acceptance, fee payment, document upload, query response and selecting Freeze, Float or Slide where applicable.

Missing a deadline can cancel the allotted seat and remove you from later rounds. Keep screenshots of allotment status, payment receipt and reporting confirmation. For upgrades, continue tracking every round until the final allotment and institute reporting instructions are complete.

If no seat is allotted in an early round, keep participating unless you intentionally exit. Seat movement can happen after upgrades, withdrawals and category-wise vacancies.

JoSAA 2026 counselling ran across five allotment rounds, and all rounds have now concluded. Registration and choice filling took place from June 2 to June 11, 2026, followed by five allotment rounds spread over more than a month. Below is the complete round-wise schedule for reference.

With Round 5 marking the final round of regular JoSAA counselling, the NIT+ system (covering NITs, IIITs and GFTIs) also opened a partial admission fee payment window from July 22 to July 24, 2026 for candidates who wanted to confirm their seat before institute reporting closed.

After every round of allotment, candidates who accept a seat must choose one of three options before the deadline. This choice determines whether you stay at your current allotted seat or continue to be considered for a better one in subsequent rounds.

• Freeze: You are fully satisfied with the allotted institute and branch and do not want to be considered for any further rounds. You lock in the current seat, proceed with document verification and reporting, and exit the counselling process. Freeze is irreversible once selected.
• Float: You accept the current seat but remain open to an upgrade in a higher preference (as per your choice list) in later rounds. If you get upgraded, the new seat replaces the earlier one. If not upgraded, you retain the current allotted seat.
• Slide: You keep your current institute but want to be considered only for a better branch within the same institute. Slide restricts upgrades to programmes offered at the same institute where you already hold a seat, rather than any institute in your choice list.

As a general rule: choose Freeze only when you are certain about the seat, choose Float if you want the best possible upgrade across all your preferences, and choose Slide if you specifically want a better branch at the same institute without risking your current seat elsewhere. Not selecting any option within the deadline is treated as a failure to respond and can result in seat cancellation.

JoSAA allotment considers both All India Rank (or Home State/Other State status for NITs) and the category under which a candidate has registered. Seats are reserved as per the applicable roster: General/EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD, and separately for Home State and Other State quota at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

A candidate can sometimes be allotted a seat under the General category even while registered under a reserved category, if their rank is competitive enough for the open seat — this is normal and not an error. Category certificates must match exactly what was declared during JEE Main/Advanced registration and JoSAA choice filling; any mismatch can lead to a document verification query or seat cancellation.

Home State quota at NITs applies based on the state from which a candidate passed Class 12, not the state of domicile alone, so candidates should verify this carefully before assuming Home State eligibility. PwD candidates should ensure their PwD certificate meets the minimum disability percentage criteria specified by JoSAA.

• Missing the fee payment deadline: Even a few hours' delay in paying the seat acceptance fee can cancel the allotment. Set reminders and pay well before the last date.
• Uploading unclear or mismatched documents: Blurry scans or documents with names/details that don't match JEE records commonly trigger verification queries.
• Selecting the wrong Freeze/Float/Slide option: Choosing Freeze too early can lock you out of a potentially better seat; choosing Float when you actually wanted to stay put can risk losing a seat you liked if the system reassigns it.
• Ignoring query notifications: If JoSAA or the institute raises a query on any document, it must be resolved within the given window. An unanswered query can lead to automatic seat cancellation.
• Not tracking round-wise results: Even after Freeze, candidates should stay updated on reporting instructions and institute-specific deadlines communicated separately from the main JoSAA schedule.
• Assuming Float guarantees an upgrade: Float only keeps you eligible for an upgrade; it does not guarantee one. Vacancies depend on other candidates' choices and withdrawals.

Round 5 (July 16, 2026) was the final round of regular JoSAA 2026 counselling. Candidates who were not allotted any seat, or who are unsatisfied with their allotted seat after all five rounds, are not left without options. The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts Special Rounds after JoSAA concludes to fill remaining vacant seats at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

CSAB Special Round registration for JoSAA 2026 closed on August 3, 2026. The SR1 result was declared August 6, and the SR2 result has also been declared, completing both CSAB special rounds. Candidates who registered for JoSAA but did not get a seat, as well as certain categories of candidates who withdrew or were not allotted, become eligible to apply. CSAB follows a similar choice-filling and allotment process, so candidates should keep their documents and JEE credentials ready in advance.
