JoSAA 2026 NIT Cutoff (Opening & Closing Ranks)

Opening and closing ranks for all 31 NITs — home state & other state quota, all categories. Based on JoSAA 2025 data.

NIT Cutoffs 2026 — Key Facts

NITs use JEE Main 2026 CRL (Common Rank List) ranks for allotment. Unlike IITs (which use JEE Advanced ranks), NIT admission is based on JEE Main Paper 1 performance. The 50% home state / 50% other state seat division creates two separate cutoff pools for each NIT.

JoSAA 2026 NIT cutoffs are not pre-declared — they emerge from the allotment process. The data below is based on JoSAA 2025 Round 6 closing ranks and serves as a reference for 2026 planning.

Home State vs Other State — Understanding the Difference

For NIT admissions, your state is determined by the state where you passed your qualifying exam (Class 12). If you passed Class 12 from Tamil Nadu and apply to NIT Trichy, you fall in the Home State (HS) quota.

Key Difference

  • • Home State quota: 50% of seats, generally lower closing rank (easier to get in)
  • • Other State quota: 50% of seats, closing rank can be higher OR lower depending on NIT
  • • For less popular NITs: OS quota may have higher (easier) closing rank due to low demand
  • • For top NITs (Trichy, Warangal): HS quota for local students tends to be competitive too

JoSAA 2026 NIT Cutoff – FAQs

Common questions about NIT cutoff ranks in JoSAA 2026

1
What is the home state quota in NIT counselling?
NITs reserve 50% of seats for candidates from the home state (the state where the NIT is located) and 50% for candidates from other states (OS quota). If you are applying to NIT Trichy (Tamil Nadu), you are in the Home State quota if your 12th board is from Tamil Nadu. Home state quota generally has higher closing ranks (more competition from local students) for some NITs, while Other State quota can be more competitive for popular NITs.
2
What JEE Main rank is needed for NIT Trichy CSE?
NIT Trichy CSE (Computer Science) is the most competitive NIT program. Based on JoSAA 2025, the Other State (OS) General-Open closing rank for NIT Trichy CSE was approximately 6,000–8,000 CRL. Home State (HS) General closing rank is typically lower at ~4,000–6,000. These are JEE Main CRL ranks, not percentile.
3
How many NITs participate in JoSAA 2026?
All 31 NITs across India participate in JoSAA 2026. These include established NITs (NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, MNIT Jaipur) as well as newer ones. NIT Andhra Pradesh, NIT Uttarakhand, and NIT Sikkim are among the more recently established institutes with fewer seats and higher closing ranks.
4
Is NIT or new IIT better for CSE?
This depends on your rank. IIT Bombay/Delhi/Madras CSE is far superior. However, new IIT CSE (rank 5,000–8,000 range) vs NIT Trichy CSE (rank 6,000–8,000 range) is a genuine comparison. Most students prefer old IIT CSE over top NIT CSE. A new IIT vs top NIT in non-CSE branches is more debatable — NIT Trichy ECE may be preferred over IIT Jammu CSE by many.
5
Will NIT cutoffs increase or decrease in 2026 compared to 2025?
NIT cutoffs for 2026 are expected to be close to 2025, with minor variations. The number of JEE Main 2026 qualified students and any new seat additions at NITs will affect cutoffs. Generally, cutoffs for popular NIT branches (CSE, ECE) remain stable. New NITs tend to see slight year-over-year changes as their reputation grows.
