UPTAC 2026 Spot Round (Special Round)

How AKTU fills remaining vacant seats after the Round 4 auto-freeze process — eligibility, portal process, and what to expect.

UPTAC's Special Round registration began August 8–9, 2026, after Round 4 was declared on August 3 and the seat acceptance fee deadline of August 7. Special Round 2 followed, with seat allotment and physical reporting held September 3–7, 2026 — the last round for candidates with confirmed seats from earlier rounds, marking the effective end of UPTAC 2026 counselling. See our Round 3 allotment guide for what leads into this stage. Always confirm any residual status at uptac.samarth.edu.in.

What Is the UPTAC Spot / Special Round?

UPTAC (Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling) 2026, conducted by AKTU, ran through 4 main rounds — Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, and Round 4 (an auto-freeze round where floating candidates are automatically locked into their best-ever seat). After Round 4 concluded, AKTU conducted two Special Rounds — commonly referred to as a spot round — to fill seats still vacant across its 600+ affiliated institutes, with Special Round 2 physical reporting completed September 3–7, 2026.

Unlike some other states' counselling systems, where the equivalent stage is a purely decentralized walk-in process managed entirely by individual colleges, UPTAC's Special Round is still coordinated centrally through the SAMARTH portal (uptac.samarth.edu.in). Candidates fill fresh choices online against the published vacancy list, and AKTU runs a rank-based allotment specifically for the Special Round. This makes it more structured than a pure spot-admission process, though it can still differ in rules — such as Freeze/Float availability — from the main 4 rounds.

By the Special Round stage, government AKTU-affiliated institutes — HBTU Kanpur, MMMUT Gorakhpur, KNIT Sultanpur, IET Lucknow — have almost always filled their most competitive branches, particularly CSE and IT. Special Round vacancies concentrate heavily in private AKTU-affiliated colleges, which carry substantially larger seat capacity and tend to retain vacancies the longest, especially in core branches with historically lower demand.

If seats remain vacant even after the Special Round(s) conclude, individual colleges may then handle any remaining capacity through direct or management-quota admission, conducted outside the UPTAC portal entirely. At that stage, candidates would need to approach specific AKTU-affiliated colleges directly.

Steps to Follow for the Spot / Special Round

1

Check eligibility and registration status

If unallotted after Round 4, you're automatically eligible. Check if fresh registration is open for candidates who missed earlier rounds.

2

Review the fresh vacancy list

Log in to uptac.samarth.edu.in and study the Special Round vacancy matrix, which differs meaningfully from earlier rounds.

3

Fill and lock fresh choices

Submit institute-branch preferences based on the updated vacancy pattern before the deadline.

4

Check your result and pay fees promptly

Special Round reporting windows are typically short — pay the acceptance fee quickly to confirm your seat.

5

Report to the allotted institute

Carry all required documents for physical reporting and document verification at the college.

UPTAC 2026 Spot / Special Round – FAQs

Common questions about the UPTAC 2026 Special Round for vacant seats

1
What is the UPTAC 2026 spot round?
UPTAC refers to its post-Round-4 vacancy-filling stage as the Special Round (sometimes informally called a spot round). After Round 4 (the auto-freeze round) concluded on August 3, 2026, AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) conducted two Special Rounds to fill remaining vacant seats across its 600+ affiliated institutes — Special Round registration opened August 8–9, 2026, and Special Round 2's seat allotment and physical reporting ran September 3–7, 2026, marking the effective end of UPTAC 2026 counselling.
2
Who is eligible for the UPTAC Special/Spot Round?
Candidates who registered for UPTAC 2026 and remain unallotted after Round 4 are automatically eligible for the Special Round. AKTU may also open limited fresh registration during the Special Round for candidates who did not register earlier, subject to seat vacancy — check the specific notification on uptac.samarth.edu.in for that cycle's exact eligibility rules.
3
Is the UPTAC Special Round conducted online or as a walk-in?
Unlike some other states' pure walk-in spot rounds, UPTAC's Special Round is still coordinated centrally through the SAMARTH portal (uptac.samarth.edu.in), with online choice filling and rank-based allotment against the fresh vacancy list. However, if seats remain vacant even after the Special Rounds conclude, individual AKTU-affiliated colleges may then conduct their own direct/institute-level admissions outside the portal.
4
What kind of seats are typically available in the UPTAC Special Round?
By the Special Round stage, government institutes like HBTU Kanpur, MMMUT Gorakhpur, KNIT Sultanpur, and IET Lucknow have generally filled their most competitive branches. Special Round vacancies concentrate heavily in private AKTU-affiliated colleges, which have far larger seat capacity and tend to retain vacancies the longest, especially in less-preferred branches.
5
Can I still float or upgrade during the UPTAC Special Round?
Special Round rules can differ from the main 4 rounds — in many cycles, seats allotted in a Special Round are treated as more final, with limited or no further upgrade opportunity within that admission cycle. Always check the specific Freeze/Float rules published for the Special Round on uptac.samarth.edu.in before accepting.
6
What if I don't get a seat even after the UPTAC Special Round?
If you remain unallotted after all Special Rounds conclude, your options through the centralized UPTAC process are largely exhausted for that cycle. At this stage, consider contacting AKTU-affiliated private colleges directly for institute-level or management-quota admission, or explore whether you're eligible for other state or private counsellings.
