Understanding UPTAC 2026 Round 1 Allotment
Round 1 is the first seat allotment round of UPTAC (Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling) 2026, conducted by AKTU for admissions to B.Tech, B.Pharm, MBA, and MCA programs across roughly 600+ government, government-aided, and private institutes affiliated to the university. Unlike JoSAA, which handles only IITs, NITs, and centrally funded institutes, UPTAC covers the entire state engineering ecosystem — from well-known government institutes like HBTU Kanpur, MMMUT Gorakhpur, and KNIT Sultanpur to hundreds of private engineering colleges spread across UP's districts.
Round 1 allotment is generated purely on the basis of your JEE Main 2026 rank (or UP state-level entrance where applicable), the category you registered under, your UP domicile status, and — most critically — the order in which you locked your institute-branch choices between July 13 and 16. Because AKTU migrated the entire UPTAC process to the SAMARTH portal this cycle, candidates should expect the interface and notification patterns to differ from previous years, and should not assume familiarity from 2024–25 counselling carries over exactly.
A common mistake in Round 1 is under-filling the choice list — candidates who list only 15–20 top-tier government college branches often end up unallotted, while those who spread choices across 80–100 combinations (mixing government, government-aided, and reputed private colleges) get allotted in Round 1 itself. Another frequent error is neglecting to verify the UP domicile certificate before choice locking; a delayed or rejected domicile certificate can silently move a candidate from the state quota to the smaller All India quota, sharply changing which branches are realistically within reach.
UPTAC 2026 counselling had 4 main rounds, with Round 4 being an auto-freeze round, followed by an internal sliding round and 2 Special Rounds — Special Round 2's physical reporting ran September 3–7, 2026 — that were also open to fresh CUET UG-based registrations for certain private college seats. Round 1 sets the baseline — most candidates saw meaningful upward movement in Rounds 2 and 3 as higher-rank candidates Froze their allotments in top government colleges and exited the pool entirely, freeing up seats for the next tier of candidates.
Category-wise, UPTAC follows UP government reservation norms: 27% OBC, 21% SC, 2% ST, and 10% EWS, layered with horizontal reservations for PwD and women candidates at many institutes, in addition to the UP domicile reservation that applies specifically at state-funded colleges. If you registered under a reserved category, double-check that your Round 1 allotment reflects the correct category — errors here are among the most common grievances filed after Round 1 results. Steps to Follow After Round 1 Result
Check Your Allotment
Log in to uptac.samarth.edu.in with your registration credentials. Navigate to 'Seat Allotment' and download your allotment letter. Verify institute, branch, and category carefully.
Pay the Seat Acceptance Fee
Pay ₹20,000 (General/OBC/EWS) or ₹12,000 (SC/ST/PwD) online within the deadline (typically 2–3 days). Non-payment cancels your allotment permanently.
Choose Freeze or Float
Freeze locks your seat and exits you from further rounds. Float keeps you eligible for upgrades in Rounds 2 and 3 — you cannot get a worse seat by floating.
Upload / Verify Documents
Ensure your marksheets, UP domicile/category certificate, JEE Main scorecard, photo, and APAAR ID are correctly uploaded. Incomplete profiles can affect your admission.
Track Later Rounds
If you Floated or received no seat, you were automatically considered for Round 2 onward (choice filling deadline was extended to July 22, 2026, 6 PM), through Round 4 and the Special Rounds, which concluded with Special Round 2 physical reporting September 3–7, 2026.
What to Do Based on Your Round 1 Situation
Choose Freeze and proceed to admission formalities at the allotted institute. No need to risk anything further in Round 2.
Choose Float. You keep this seat as a guaranteed backup while being considered for higher preferences in Rounds 2 and 3 — floating carries no downside under UPTAC rules.
Stay in the pool — you're automatically eligible for Round 2. Do not withdraw. Review whether your choice list covered enough government-aided and private options ahead of the next round.
Government vs Private Institutes in Round 1
Government and government-aided institutes such as HBTU Kanpur, MMMUT Gorakhpur, KNIT Sultanpur, and IET Lucknow fill up fastest in Round 1 for popular branches like CSE and IT, often closing at ranks accessible only to the top percentile of JEE Main-based UPTAC applicants. Private AKTU-affiliated colleges have much larger seat capacity and typically continue to have vacancies through Round 2 and Round 3, making them a realistic fallback for candidates who Float after Round 1. Use the UPTAC College Predictor to compare your Round 1 result against expected Round 2/3 cutoff trends before deciding whether to Freeze or Float.
Round 1 Strategy Tips
- Float unless it's your dream seat — there are still 3 more rounds (2, 3, 4) to improve.
- Never miss the fee deadline — it's typically only 2–3 days after allotment.
- Round 4 is auto-freeze — floating candidates are automatically locked to their best seat, so there's no downside to floating early.
- Double-check your domicile/category tag on the allotment letter — SAMARTH migration has caused some data mismatches this cycle.
