JoSAA 2026 Category Change Rules — Can You Switch Reservation Category Mid-Counselling?
What the rules actually allow, the correction deadlines that matter, required documents, and how a category change affects an existing allotment.
Where Your Category Actually Comes From
A common misconception among JoSAA 2026 candidates is that category can be freely changed at any point during counselling, similar to editing a choice list. In reality, JoSAA does not maintain an independent category field that you can edit through its own portal. Your reservation category — General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, or a combination with PwD — is imported directly from the category you declared on your JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced application form. JoSAA simply reads this data and applies the corresponding vertical and horizontal reservation rules when generating your rank list eligibility and seat allotment.
This means that if you want to change your category, the change has to happen upstream, at the JEE Main or JEE Advanced application stage, and it has to happen before that exam's own correction window closes — which is almost always well before JoSAA counselling registration even opens. By the time JoSAA choice filling and seat allotment rounds are running, category is treated as a fixed, verified data point carried over from the exam authority (NTA for JEE Main, the organising IIT for JEE Advanced).
How Many Times Can You Change Category Before Counselling?
JEE Main typically opens a single, time-bound "application correction window" a few weeks after registration closes, in which candidates can amend limited fields, category being one of them in most cycles. This window is generally allowed only once per exam session — candidates should not expect a second opportunity if they miss it or make another error the second time around. JEE Advanced follows an even more conservative approach: since Advanced eligibility itself is contingent on JEE Main performance, category corrections at the Advanced stage are rare and tightly scrutinised, usually requiring documentary proof rather than a simple self-declared edit.
Required Documentation for a Legitimate Category Claim
- OBC-NCL: Valid non-creamy layer certificate issued within the prescribed validity period (typically within the current financial year), on the format prescribed by the Department of Personnel and Training.
- SC/ST: Caste certificate issued by a competent authority (Tehsildar, District Magistrate, or equivalent), matching the candidate's and parent's details exactly as per other identity documents.
- EWS: Income and Asset Certificate issued in the prescribed format, valid for the specified financial year, confirming family income below the EWS threshold and asset limits.
- PwD: Disability certificate of 40% or more disability issued by a government-authorised medical board.
Any mismatch between the category declared at the exam stage and the certificate produced during JoSAA document verification will result in the certificate being rejected, not the category being "changed" in your favour.
Impact on an Already-Allotted Seat
If you are allotted a seat under a reserved category (say OBC-NCL) and it later emerges — typically at document verification — that your certificate is invalid, expired, or does not qualify under current non-creamy-layer income limits, the seat allotted under that reserved quota is cancelled. Depending on the stage of counselling and seat availability, you may then be evaluated afresh under your fallback category (usually General, if your rank supports it), but this is not automatic or guaranteed — it depends entirely on whether General category seats remain open at that round for the programmes you had originally chosen. This is precisely why declaring an accurate category from the outset, and keeping certificates ready well before counselling, is far safer than hoping to fix things mid-process.
Genuine Clerical Errors vs Wanting a Different Category
There is an important distinction between wanting to change category for strategic reasons (not permitted) and reporting a genuine clerical or technical error where the category recorded does not match what you actually submitted (which can be raised as a grievance). If you fall into the second situation, raise it immediately through JoSAA's official grievance redressal channel with proof of your original application, rather than waiting — corrections become progressively harder, and in some cases impossible, as rounds progress and seats get locked in.
