SC/ST/OBC/EWS Category Certificate for JoSAA 2026

OBC-NCL certificate must be from the current financial year. EWS requires family income below ₹8 lakh. SC/ST certificates from state government authority.

Category Certificates for JoSAA 2026 — Overview

JoSAA 2026 uses category-based reservation as mandated by the Government of India: SC (15%), ST (7.5%), OBC-NCL (27%), EWS (10%), and PwD (5% horizontal). Each category requires a specific certificate to avail reservation benefits. The most critical requirement: OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be from the current financial year — old certificates are not accepted.

Common mistakes: (1) Using an old OBC certificate from a previous year — get a fresh one. (2) Using a state OBC certificate for central institutions — get Central OBC format. (3) Not getting EWS certificate before JoSAA registration — get it as early as possible. (4) Missing the 'Non-Creamy Layer' mention in OBC certificate. (5) Caste certificate spelling not matching Class 10 records. Ensure all certificates have consistent name spelling.

Category Certificate Requirements Summary

SC Certificate
State government; tehsildar/SDM; no expiry for SC status
ST Certificate
State government; tehsildar/SDM; no expiry for ST status
OBC-NCL Certificate
Current FY only; must say 'Non-Creamy Layer'; Central OBC list
EWS Certificate
Current FY only; family income < ₹8 lakh/year; tehsildar/SDM

Central vs State OBC List — Critical Difference

This is the most misunderstood aspect: NITs, IITs, and IIITs are central government institutions and follow the Central OBC list (maintained by NCBC — National Commission for Backward Classes). Many states have communities in their state OBC list that are NOT in the central OBC list. If your community is only on the state list, you CANNOT claim OBC-NCL reservation at central institutions.

To verify: Check the NCBC website (ncbc.nic.in) to see if your community is in the Central OBC list for your state. If yes, get a certificate specifically mentioning the community name as per Central OBC list. If not, you will be treated as OPEN/General at NITs/IITs — plan your JoSAA choices accordingly with General category cutoffs.

Category Certificate JoSAA 2026 – FAQs

Common questions about SC/ST/OBC/EWS category certificates for JoSAA 2026

1
What category certificates are needed for JoSAA 2026?
JoSAA 2026 requires the following category certificates for reservation benefits: SC (Scheduled Caste) certificate from tehsildar/SDM/equivalent. ST (Scheduled Tribe) certificate from tehsildar/SDM/equivalent. OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes - Non-Creamy Layer) certificate issued within the current financial year (very important — must be recent). EWS (Economically Weaker Section) certificate for current financial year (income below ₹8 lakh per annum). All must be from competent state government authorities.
2
What is the validity of OBC-NCL certificate for JoSAA 2026?
The OBC-NCL certificate for JoSAA 2026 must be issued in the current financial year (April 2026 – March 2027). This is a critical requirement — JoSAA specifically requires the certificate to be issued in the year of admission, not in previous years. Many candidates make the mistake of using an old OBC certificate. Get a fresh OBC-NCL certificate (with Non-Creamy Layer mention) from your tehsildar/SDM immediately before JoSAA registration.
3
Who issues OBC-NCL certificate for central institutions like NITs?
For central government institutions (NITs, IITs, IIITs, GFTIs), OBC-NCL certificate must follow the central government list of OBC communities, not the state OBC list (which may differ). The certificate must: (1) Mention the community name as per Central OBC list. (2) State 'Non-Creamy Layer' status explicitly. (3) Be issued by a tehsildar, SDM, district magistrate, or equivalent. (4) Be in the prescribed format for central services. Get a certificate specifically mentioning 'Central Government OBC' if your state's format differs.
4
What income limit applies for EWS certificate for JoSAA 2026?
For EWS (Economically Weaker Section) certificate for JoSAA 2026, the family income must be below ₹8 lakh per annum (annual gross income from all sources). Additionally, the family must not own 5 acres or more of agricultural land, and residential property of 1000 sq ft or more in notified urban areas. The EWS certificate for JoSAA 2026 must be issued for the financial year of admission (FY 2025-26) by the tehsildar or SDM of your area.
5
Can I use a state caste certificate for JoSAA at central institutions?
For SC and ST: State and central government use the same Constitutional SC/ST lists, so a state certificate is generally accepted. For OBC: State OBC list differs from Central OBC list. If your community is in the central OBC list, you need a certificate specifically mentioning Central OBC status. If your community is only on the state OBC list (not central), you CANNOT claim OBC reservation at NITs/IITs — you would be treated as General. This is one of the most common admission issues candidates face.
