JoSAA 2026 Documents Required

JoSAA 2026 has a strict two-stage document verification process: online document upload during reporting, and physical original document verification at the allotted institute. A single missing or invalid document can result in seat cancellation, even after fee payment. Preparing documents well in advance — especially category certificates — is critical.

The underlying reason this process is so strict is that JoSAA seat allotment is merit- and category-based, and every claim you make during registration — your category, your home state for NIT quota purposes, any PwD benefit, your gender for supernumerary female seats — has to be backed by an official document that an admissions officer can independently verify. Institutes are not in a position to simply take your word for it, since doing so would open the door to misuse of reserved-category and quota benefits meant for genuinely eligible candidates. This is also why document-related issues are one of the most common reasons candidates lose an otherwise-secured seat: a certificate that has expired, one issued in the wrong format, or one that doesn't exactly match the name and details on your JEE application can all trigger rejection at verification, regardless of how strong your rank was.

Beyond simply having the right list of documents, how you prepare them matters just as much. A recurring issue candidates face is a name mismatch across documents — for instance, a slightly different spelling or order of name between the Class 10 certificate, Aadhar card, and the JEE application form. Even small discrepancies (a missing middle name, a transliteration difference) can cause a verification officer to flag the application, requiring you to produce a notarized affidavit explaining the discrepancy before you're cleared. It's worth cross-checking your name, date of birth, and category details across every document well before reporting day, so any correction can be sorted out with the issuing authority in advance rather than under time pressure at the institute.

Another frequent problem is category certificate validity. OBC-NCL and EWS certificates in particular are only valid for the financial year they are issued in, meaning a certificate obtained too early (before the relevant financial year begins) will be rejected even if it is otherwise accurate. SC and ST certificates, by contrast, are typically treated as permanent and do not need to be renewed annually. Given how strict institutes are on this point, it's worth applying for a fresh OBC-NCL or EWS certificate as soon as the relevant window opens rather than reusing an older one, since certificate issuance at local government offices can itself take time and is not something to leave until the last moment before reporting.
