JoSAA 2026 for SC Category – Complete Counselling Guide

15% reservation at all IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs — closing ranks, certificate requirements, and winning strategy

SC Quota: The Basics

Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates are entitled to 15% reservation at all Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) that participate in JoSAA counselling. This includes all 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and a number of GFTIs like ISM Dhanbad, NIT Agartala, and others.

The 15% is calculated on the total sanctioned intake for each branch at each institute. For example, if NIT Warangal has 60 seats in CSE, 9 seats (15%) are reserved for SC candidates. These seats are filled through JoSAA counselling based on JEE Main rank (for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs) or JEE Advanced rank (for IITs).

SC candidates must meet the eligibility criteria (75% in Class 12 or top 20 percentile, relaxed to 65% for SC/ST candidates) and must have qualified JEE Main/Advanced with valid SC category status declared at registration.

Certificate Requirements & Common Errors

The caste certificate is a permanent document (unlike OBC-NCL which must be of the current year). However, the certificate must comply with the format prescribed by the Government of India and be issued by a competent authority from the state/UT where the candidate or their family belongs, not necessarily the state of current residence.

Error: Certificate issued by wrong authority

Fix: Must be issued by SDM, Tahsildar, BDO, or District Magistrate — not by a village officer or panchayat

Error: Certificate for wrong state list

Fix: SC lists are state-specific. Ensure your caste appears in the SC list of the state from which your certificate is issued

Error: Non-standard format

Fix: Must be in the Government of India prescribed format with official seal, signature, and designation of the issuing authority

Error: Certificate in regional language only

Fix: Should have an English translation or be bilingual — many institutes require English version

Post-Admission Support for SC Students

SC students at IITs and NITs are eligible for several post-admission benefits and support structures:

  • Scholarship: Central Sector Scholarship for SC students covering full tuition fees at IITs/NITs
  • SC/ST Cell: Most IITs and NITs have dedicated cells for SC/ST student welfare, handling grievances and academic support
  • Bridge Courses: Several IITs conduct bridge courses in mathematics, physics, and chemistry before semester starts
  • Remedial Classes: Extra coaching and tutoring for SC students who need academic support during the program
  • Dr. Ambedkar Fellowship: Research fellowships for SC postgraduate and PhD students at premier institutes

1
What percentage of seats are reserved for SC category in JoSAA?
SC candidates get 15% reservation at all centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs) participating in JoSAA — including all 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and other GFTIs. This is a constitutional mandate under Article 15(4) and 16(4) of the Indian Constitution. The 15% is calculated on total sanctioned intake per branch per institute.
2
What certificate is required for SC category in JoSAA?
A permanent caste certificate issued by a competent authority (SDM, Tehsildar, District Magistrate, or Revenue Officer) of the state where you belong is required. The certificate must state that you belong to a Scheduled Caste as listed in the Presidential Order for that state. It must be in the format specified by the Government of India and carry the official seal and signature.
3
By how much are SC category closing ranks better than Open category?
SC category closing ranks are typically 5 to 8 times higher (worse) than Open category ranks for popular branches. For example, NIT Trichy CSE closes around rank 1,100 for Open category, while the SC closing rank can be around 8,000 to 10,000. At IITs, the difference is similar — IIT Delhi CSE Open closes around rank 100, while SC closes around rank 1,000-1,500.
4
How should SC candidates fill choices in JoSAA?
Add your SC category choices first (higher preference), then add the Open category version of the same branch and institute below as a fallback. This way, if you qualify under Open merit, you may get the seat as an Open candidate while your SC quota seat remains available for other SC candidates. Always add choices at multiple institutes with a mix of top and safe options.
5
What preparatory courses are available for SC candidates at IITs?
IITs offer a 1-year Preparatory Course for SC/ST candidates who narrowly miss the JEE Advanced cutoff. Candidates who qualify the Preparatory Course entrance exam and complete it successfully get direct admission to B.Tech programs at IITs in the subsequent year. This is specifically for IITs; NITs and IIITs do not have an equivalent preparatory course.

Certificate Tip

SC certificate is permanent — but verify it's in the correct format for Central Government schemes. Some old state-format certificates may not be accepted. Get a fresh one if in doubt.
