EWS Category

JoSAA 2026 for EWS Category – Certificate Validity & Cutoffs

10% horizontal reservation for General category students with family income under Rs. 8 lakh — introduced in 2019 via the 103rd Amendment.

What is EWS Reservation?

Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation was introduced in 2019 through the 103rd Constitutional Amendment, adding Article 15(6) and 16(6) to the Constitution. It provides 10% horizontal reservation to General category (UR) candidates from economically weaker backgrounds — a significant addition since it was the first income-based reservation for upper-caste/General category families.

In JoSAA 2026, EWS seats are over and above the existing 50% reserved category quota. This means the total reservation is now 60% (SC 15% + ST 7.5% + OBC-NCL 27% + EWS 10%), with 40% for Open category.

  • • General (UR) category — not SC/ST/OBC
  • • Family income < Rs. 8 lakh/year
  • • Agricultural land < 5 acres
  • • Residential flat < 1,000 sq. ft.
  • • Residential plot < 100 sq. yards (notified areas)

EWS Closing Ranks: Top Institutes

EWS closing ranks are typically 1.5–2.5x higher than Open category closing ranks. The relief is moderate but meaningful — especially for borderline candidates near Open cutoffs.

How to Obtain EWS Certificate for JoSAA

Start the process in April — immediately after the financial year begins. The certificate takes 7–21 working days in most states. Here is the step-by-step process:

1

Collect income proof

Gather ITR (Income Tax Return) for the previous 3 years, salary slips (if employed), Form 16, and any agricultural income certificate. All family members' income must be totaled.

2

Collect property documents

Prepare documents confirming your family's land/property holdings — land records, property papers, or declaration that no property exceeding limits exists.

3

Apply online or at SDM office

Most states have e-district portals for online applications. Alternatively, visit your local SDM/Tehsildar office with all documents and the application form for EWS certificate.

4

Collect and verify

Once issued, verify that the certificate explicitly mentions 'Economically Weaker Section', is dated after April 1, 2026, shows the issuing officer's full name, designation, and official seal.

EWS Choice Filling Strategy for JoSAA 2026

Since EWS candidates are from the General category, they should add both EWS and Open category choices in their JoSAA choice list. This is crucial because:

  • If your rank qualifies for an Open seat at your preferred institute, you will be allotted as Open — which is fine, you get the same seat.
  • Adding EWS choices higher in preference means JoSAA will try to give you an EWS seat at a better institute first.
  • Having Open choices lower in the list ensures you have a fallback even if your EWS certificate has an issue at reporting.

Pro Tip: Fill Both EWS + Open

For every institute-branch combination you want, add the EWS version at a higher preference number, followed by the Open version right below it. This gives you two bites at the cherry for each option.

Open guide
1
Who is eligible for EWS category in JoSAA 2026?
EWS (Economically Weaker Section) reservation is available to candidates from the General category (not SC/ST/OBC) whose family's gross annual income is less than Rs. 8 lakh per year. Additionally, the family must not own more than 5 acres of agricultural land, a residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. or more, a residential plot of 100 sq. yards or more in notified municipalities, or a plot of 200 sq. yards or more in other areas. All four conditions must be met simultaneously.
2
How long is the EWS certificate valid for JoSAA 2026?
The EWS certificate is valid for ONE financial year only. For JoSAA 2026, your certificate must be issued after April 1, 2026. Unlike SC/ST certificates which are permanent, the EWS certificate must be renewed every year because the income and property eligibility must be verified for the current financial year. This is the most critical document requirement for EWS candidates — do not use a certificate from the previous year.
3
How is EWS different from OBC-NCL reservation?
Both EWS and OBC-NCL have the same Rs. 8 lakh income limit, but they are different categories. OBC-NCL is for communities listed in the Central OBC list, while EWS is exclusively for General (UR) category candidates who do not belong to SC/ST/OBC. EWS was introduced in 2019 through the 103rd Constitutional Amendment, providing 10% horizontal reservation. OBC-NCL provides 27% reservation. An OBC-NCL candidate cannot claim EWS benefits; EWS is a separate basket of seats.
4
What happens if my EWS certificate is not ready in time for JoSAA registration?
You can register in JoSAA as General (Open) category first, then submit your EWS certificate during document verification if it is ready by then. However, for choice filling, you should fill both EWS and Open choices. If your EWS certificate is genuinely not available by the reporting date, you may have to accept a General category seat if allotted under Open, or wait for CSAB counselling. Do not skip registering — obtain the certificate urgently from your SDM/Tehsildar office.
5
Are EWS closing ranks significantly better than Open/General at top institutes?
Yes, EWS closing ranks are typically 1.5–2.5x higher than Open category closing ranks. For example, NIT Trichy CSE (OS) closes around 1,100 for Open, while EWS closes around 2,000–2,500. At IITs, IIT Delhi CSE Open closes around rank 100 in JEE Advanced, while EWS closes around 200–300. This gives moderate relief compared to OBC-NCL (which is 2.5–4x), but still a meaningful advantage for borderline candidates.
