JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling for EWS Category
Everything EWS candidates need to know: 10% quota explained, certificate requirements, how EWS choices appear in the JoSAA portal, ordering strategy, and what to do if your certificate is not ready in time.
What Is the EWS Quota in JoSAA 2026?
The Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation is a 10% horizontal quota introduced in 2019 through the 103rd Constitutional Amendment. In the context of JoSAA counselling, it means that 10% of seats across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs are reserved for EWS candidates in every programme.
To qualify for EWS seats in JoSAA 2026, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- You must not belong to SC, ST, or OBC-NCL categories (those categories have separate reservations).
- Your family's gross annual income must be below ₹8 lakh per year.
- Your family must not own more than 5 acres of agricultural land.
- Your family must not own a residential flat of 1,000 sq. ft. or more.
- Your family must not own a residential plot of 100 sq. yards or more in a notified municipality.
In JoSAA's rank system, EWS candidates get a separate category rank (EWS rank) based on their JEE Main percentile within the EWS pool. It is this EWS rank — not your general CRL rank — that determines your position in the EWS queue for seat allotment.
EWS Certificate Requirements for JoSAA 2026
The most critical document for EWS candidates is the Income and Asset Certificate in the prescribed format issued by the competent authority. Getting this right is non-negotiable — a certificate in the wrong format or from the wrong authority will be rejected.
Issuing Authority
Tehsildar / Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) / District Magistrate / First Class Stipendiary Magistrate / any other officer as notified by the State Government.
Format
Must be in the exact format prescribed by the Government of India (Office Memorandum No. 36039/1/2019-Estt(Res) dated 31.01.2019). Many states have their own versions — verify it matches the central format.
Financial Year Validity
The certificate must be issued for the financial year relevant to the year of admission. For JoSAA 2026, this means a certificate issued in the Financial Year 2025–26 (April 2025 to March 2026) or Financial Year 2026-27 is acceptable.
Language
The certificate should ideally be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation if issued in a regional language.
Seal and Signature
Must bear the official seal and signature of the competent authority with designation clearly mentioned.
Critical Warning
An EWS certificate issued by a village sarpanch, gram panchayat secretary, or revenue patwari is not valid for JoSAA. The certificate must come from one of the specified authorities listed above. Submitting an invalid certificate will result in cancellation of your EWS allotment.
EWS Closing Ranks vs OPEN Closing Ranks (2025 Data)
EWS seats have better (higher) closing ranks than OPEN seats for the same programme. The table below shows approximate 2025 data to illustrate the advantage. EWS closing ranks are typically 50–70% higher than OPEN closing ranks for popular programmes.
| Programme | OPEN Closing Rank | EWS Closing Rank | Rank Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIT Delhi – CSE | ~67 | ~112 | ~67% |
| IIT Bombay – Electrical | ~360 | ~580 | ~61% |
| NIT Trichy – CSE | ~3,200 | ~5,200 | ~63% |
| NIT Warangal – ECE | ~4,800 | ~7,500 | ~56% |
| NIT Surathkal – Mechanical | ~12,000 | ~18,500 | ~54% |
| IIIT Hyderabad – CSE | ~220 | ~380 | ~73% |

How EWS Choices Appear in the JoSAA Portal
When you log in to josaa.nic.in for choice filling as an EWS-registered candidate, you will see that each programme/institute combination appears multiple times under different categories. For example, for NIT Trichy – CSE you may see:
NIT Trichy – CSE – OPEN – Gender-Neutral
Open general pool, most competitive
NIT Trichy – CSE – OPEN – Female Only
Supernumerary for women in open pool
NIT Trichy – CSE – EWS – Gender-Neutral
EWS quota — use your EWS rank here
NIT Trichy – CSE – EWS – Female Only
EWS supernumerary for women
NIT Trichy – CSE – OBC-NCL – Gender-Neutral
Not applicable for EWS candidates
As an EWS candidate, you should add both the EWS-category choice AND the OPEN-category choice for the same programme. Place the EWS choice above the OPEN choice so you get the EWS advantage if your certificate is accepted.
EWS Choice Ordering Strategy
Add EWS versions of your most desired programmes
For every IIT/NIT/IIIT programme you want, add the EWS-category version as your primary choice. These have better (higher) closing ranks than OPEN seats.
Follow each EWS choice with the corresponding OPEN choice
Directly below each EWS choice, add the same programme under OPEN category. If EWS certificate is rejected, this OPEN seat acts as immediate fallback for that programme.
Add EWS HS quota choices if from a NIT home state
If you are applying to NITs, remember each NIT has Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quota seats. Add EWS-HS choices if your NIT is in your home state — these have even better closing ranks.
Ensure adequate safety net choices at the bottom
Include EWS and OPEN choices at GFTIs (IIEST Shibpur, BIT Mesra, etc.) and less popular NITs/IIITs as insurance. These have very high EWS closing ranks, ensuring you are not left without a seat.
Do not fill choices for SC/ST/OBC-NCL categories
As an EWS candidate under OPEN (General) category, you are not eligible for SC, ST, or OBC-NCL seats. Adding these would be invalid and such choices are typically filtered by the JoSAA system.
What to Do If Your EWS Certificate Is Not Ready
A common problem: JoSAA counselling begins in late June, and many candidates' EWS certificates from the previous financial year have expired or a new one has not yet been obtained for the current financial year.
Option 1 — Get the certificate urgently. Contact your local Tehsildar or SDM immediately. Processing typically takes 7–15 working days. Start this process even before JEE results are out. Do not wait for JoSAA to open.
Option 2 — Fill both EWS and OPEN choices. You can add EWS choices without having the certificate in hand. The certificate is only needed at the document upload stage after allotment. If you fill EWS choices and then cannot produce the certificate, your EWS allotment will be cancelled — but if you have also added OPEN choices in your list, you may still get an OPEN seat through subsequent rounds.
Option 3 — Participate as OPEN (General) only. If you genuinely cannot obtain an EWS certificate in time, participate as a General/OPEN category candidate. The OPEN category has no reservation but is still fully accessible. Your JEE rank determines your position in the OPEN queue.
Important: Do not use a certificate from the previous financial year (2024-25) for JoSAA 2026. Authorities and institutes are strict about the validity period, and this is one of the most common reasons for EWS allotment cancellations.
