JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling for Girls – Female Supernumerary Seat Strategy

Female candidates have access to two seat pools in JoSAA: regular gender-neutral seats AND exclusive female-only supernumerary seats. Here's how to use both to maximize your allotment.

Female Candidates Have a Structural Advantage

Female candidates compete in two pools simultaneously: gender-neutral seats (open to all) and female-only supernumerary seats (exclusive to women). A male candidate with the same rank only gets one shot. Female candidates effectively have double the chances — and female-only seats typically have closing ranks 2–3x higher than gender-neutral seats at the same institute.

What Are Female Supernumerary Seats?

The Government of India introduced female supernumerary seats at IITs to increase gender diversity. These are additional seats created above the regular seat count — they do not reduce the number of seats available to male candidates.

Example: IIT Bombay CSE

  • • Regular (Gender-Neutral) seats: 80
  • • Additional Female Supernumerary seats: ~20% extra = 16
  • • Total seats available to female candidates: 96
  • • Male candidates can only access: 80 seats

IITs currently offer approximately 20% additional supernumerary seats per programme for female candidates. This has significantly increased female enrolment at IITs from below 10% to over 20% in recent years.

How They Appear in the JoSAA Choice List

In the JoSAA choice filling portal, each institute-branch combination has a Gender column. For most programmes, you will see two rows:

GENDER-NEUTRAL

Open to all candidates (male and female). These are the regular seats. All candidates compete for these.

FEMALE ONLY

Exclusive to female candidates. These are the supernumerary seats. Only female candidates compete for these — giving them significantly higher closing ranks.

Female candidates should add BOTH types to their choice list at preferred institutes.

Optimal Choice Ordering Strategy for Female Candidates

Key Ordering Rule

For the same institute-branch, put the Gender-Neutral seat higher than the Female-Only seat. If you get the gender-neutral seat (better competition), great. If you don't qualify for it, JoSAA will try the female-only seat next — still at your preferred institute. Never put female-only above gender-neutral for the same programme, as that would mean you get the female-only seat even when you could have gotten the gender-neutral one.

JoSAA 2026 Female Supernumerary Seats – FAQs

Common questions about female supernumerary seats and choice filling strategy for girl candidates

1
What are female supernumerary seats in JoSAA 2026?
Female supernumerary seats are additional seats created exclusively for female candidates at IITs (and selected NITs). These seats are ABOVE the regular seat matrix — they do not reduce general or reserved category seats. For example, if IIT Bombay CSE has 80 regular seats, it may additionally have 16 supernumerary seats exclusively for female candidates, taking the effective total to 96. This policy was introduced to increase female enrolment at IITs, which historically had low female representation.
2
Can male candidates apply for female-only supernumerary seats?
No. Female-only (supernumerary) seats are strictly for female candidates. Male candidates cannot apply for or be allotted to these seats. In the JoSAA choice list, these seats are clearly labelled as 'FEMALE ONLY' in the gender column. The JoSAA system automatically restricts allotment to female candidates only for these seats.
3
Do female supernumerary seats have different cutoff ranks than regular seats?
Yes. Female-only supernumerary seats have higher closing rank numbers (i.e., they are easier to get) compared to gender-neutral seats at the same institute and branch. This is because only female candidates compete for them, and the pool of female candidates is smaller than the combined pool. For example, IIT Bombay CSE gender-neutral closing rank may be ~67, while the female-only supernumerary closing rank might be ~150 — meaning a female candidate with rank 120 can still get IIT Bombay CSE through the female-only seat.
4
How do I see female-only seats in the JoSAA portal?
In the JoSAA choice filling interface, each college-branch combination shows a 'Gender' column with values: 'Gender-Neutral' (open to all) or 'Female Only' (exclusive to female candidates). As a female candidate, you will see both types and can add either or both to your choice list. You can filter the choice list by gender to quickly find female-only options at your preferred institutes.
5
Do female supernumerary seats have separate home-state quota at NITs?
At NITs, the home-state (HS) and other-state (OS) quota applies within female supernumerary seats as well. So for NITs, female candidates need to separately add HS and OS versions of female-only seats if applicable. At IITs, there is no HS/OS distinction — it's a single national pool. Female candidates targeting NITs should add both HS and OS versions of female-only seats at NITs they are interested in.
