Gender-Neutral & Supernumerary Seats

JoSAA 2026 seat types include:

Gender-Neutral (GN)

Open to both male and female candidates. These form the majority of seats.

Female Only (FO)

Reserved exclusively for female candidates. Helps increase female enrollment.

Supernumerary (IIT)

Extra seats created at IITs beyond sanctioned intake, specifically for female candidates to achieve 20% female enrollment target.

PwD Seats

5% horizontal reservation within each category for candidates with benchmark disability (40%+).

What is the total number of seats in JoSAA 2026?
JoSAA 2026 offers approximately 57,000–58,000 seats across all participating institutes: ~17,000 in 23 IITs, ~25,000 in 31 NITs, ~7,500 in 26 IIITs, and ~7,000 in 54 GFTIs. The exact seat matrix is published on josaa.nic.in before counselling begins.

How are seats distributed by category in JoSAA 2026?
Seats follow the central government reservation policy: 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC-NCL (only at centrally funded institutes), 10% for EWS, and the remaining 40.5% for General/Open category. Additionally, 5% horizontal reservation is provided for PwD candidates within each category.

What are Supernumerary seats for female candidates in IITs?
IITs have a gender-inclusion initiative under which extra supernumerary seats are created for female candidates to ensure at least 20% female enrollment. These are over and above the regular seat matrix. They are offered to female candidates only, after the regular seats are filled, with a slightly relaxed cutoff.

Does the JoSAA 2026 seat matrix change from 2025?
The seat matrix is updated slightly each year. New programs are added, some institutes increase seats, and IIT expansion continues. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras have consistently maintained their seat counts. Newer IITs (like IIT Jammu, IIT Dharwad) see gradual increases. The full 2026 matrix is released at josaa.nic.in.

Which IIT has the most seats?
IIT Kharagpur is the largest IIT with approximately 2,000+ seats across all programs. IIT Roorkee, IIT BHU (Varanasi), and IIT Bombay also have large seat matrices with 1,000+ seats each. Newer IITs (like IIT Jammu, IIT Dharwad, IIT Goa) have 100–200 seats currently.
